Glavine or Chipper, who would be a better coach?
Watching Tom Glavine in the broadcast booth got me thinking about how he would be as a manager and I have always wondered if Chipper would consider being a coach. Here are my quick arguments for both.
When Tom Glavine speaks he has a very commanding voice. I believe players would listen to what he has to say, especially pitchers. I believe the question with him is whether he would be better suited as Head Coach or Pitching Coach.
It has been well documented Chipper's ability to dissect a swing and make adjustments. He has always worked with teammates to help enhance their abilities and that's why I think he would make a great Hitting Coach.
Do you believe that either of them would be interested in such roles and would it be with the Braves, another organization, or college (a la Tony Gwynn)?

I think both would be capable and successful as a pitching or hitting coach respectably. For some reason, I think Chipper will follow his Dad’s path and work with his kids, especially if one turns into more than a little leaguer. He might free lance some, with a few individual players at his batting cage at home or on the ranch, or maybe he does join the Braves as a coach or Manager in a few years. Strangely, I think Glavine is more likely to be a coach than Chipper. And I think he would be very good.
Heyward is pretty good
I’ve always thought of Glavine as more of a GM than a coach. He just seems to understand the business side of baseball very well. Maybe that’s just me, though.

He was a players union Rep
no way would he end up on the other side of that fence and be a GM
In answer to the question, No wrong answer, both would be great.

Wouldn’t this actually be some experience that would lead toward being a GM?

Perhaps
but his work for what can be considered the other team won’t be an incentive for owners to hire him. And he clearly is a pro-union (read pro-player) guy. I doubt that he would want a job that requires him to try to negotiate deals that are team favorable as opposed to player favorable.
Is all of this definite. No. But it is something to consider.

While past success on the field does not equate to equivalent success in the dugout, you’re talking about two individuals who possess superior knowledge about their craft and would ultimately be quite successful respectively.

I think Glavine would be a good manager and Chipper would be a good hitting coach….But Glavine could be a hitting coach too! Remember the “Chicks dig the longball” commercial? (who could ever forget it?)

I can see
Glavine being a manager, and Chipper being one of those hitting coaches invited to spring training… As much as I would LOVE to see Chip coach the Braves year-round, I have a hard time believing that he’d jump back into baseball full-time after retiring.
Chippy
Chipper is better at any coaching or managing job, and i’ll tell you why. Chipper will retire with honor because he choosed when to. Glavine was FORCED to retire because he sucked so bad no one wanted him and the Bravos released him.
Ryan Marby
Chipper.
Don’t know if he would take it if offered, but I can hardly imagine anyone else that would bring out the loyalty and desire to win for him (like Bobby does) more than Chipper…the guy who has always been a Brave and only a Brave.
I know it would make me very happy to see him in that role. Maybe one day.

Chipper
I can see Chipper taking a coaching job or managerial job in the near future. He is a baseball lifer and has not really complaint much about the travel, etc.

Maddux for manager
I see Maddux being listed as a candidate for the Cubs job next year. I would love to see Maddux as a potential Braves manager (probably down the line…since the Braves should be in contention next year and need someone with more seasoning).

Or at least, that’s the rumor.
