Braves Lose 6-3 to Brewers

The Brewers need to get over themselves. Why the hell would Jonny Venters throw at Prince Fielder to lead off the 8th in a game that actually matters to us? There's no reason for Prince to freak out and then take a dirty slide into 2nd base to potentially end Alex Gonzalez's season. That's not a part of baseball. Wild pitches happen. Get over it.

Anyways...that game wasn't very good.

The Brewers got on the board in the 4th when Prince Fielder grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to score a runner from 3rd. The Braves battled right back in the bottom half of the inning when "Lefty Killer" Matt Diaz hit a 2-run rocket HR to left field.

Fielder hit a solo-HR in the 7th to tie it, and then it all fell apart. Hudson loaded the bases and then walked in a run on a 3-2 slider in the dirt to Rickie Weeks. Peter Moylan came in to stop the bleeding, but promptly gave up a 3-run double to Corey Hart. Brewers lead 6-2 after 7.

Eric Hinske hit a solo-HR in the 7th to get the Braves within 3 runs. Martin Prado and Jason Heyward both hit singles to bring Alex Gonzalez to the plate as the potential tying-run, but he struck out on a filthy sinker.

As you probably saw, Jonny Venters accidentally hit Prince Fielder to lead off the 8th inning and was ejected from the game, as was Bobby Cox. As mentioned above, Fielder than made a dirty slide into 2nd base to break up a double play, but the Teletubby was unsuccessful. Gonzalez could've retaliated, but decided to show class and walk away.

The Braves couldn't score in the 8th or 9th and fell for the 2nd straight night at home.

MVP:

Corey Hart - 2-for-4, 3RBI

LVP:

Peter Moylan - That 3-run double really hurt. Peter HAS to get that out in a close game and the double essentially ended the game.

Tomorrow's game is at 1:35EST. Derek Lowe against Manny Parra.

I appreciate team loyalty as much as the next person, but come on. A pitch over his head then a pitch in his back? That had to be intentional. But the real problem was Cox once again leaving in a starter in the 7th inning to lose a game. Use your damn bullpen. It’s great!

by redwards95 on Jul 18, 2010 6:33 AM EDT reply actions   1 recs

this isnt against you personally, but people complain when Bobby takes starters out early and doesn’t let them finish the game…then they complain when he uses the bullpen and says he is overusing his relievers.

to the first point i comepletely agree..not to mention Prince got hit the other day. and gets hit all the damn time..its not fun to get hit and when it is happening a fair amount you probably struggle to tell when it is intentional and not intentional…in sum MVHS needs to get over himself

I do not know when the Braves last suffered the ignominy of two consecutive losses at home.
But I do know the Phillies won and are only 4.5 GB.
I say we need a win today.
Lowe (3.03 ERA over his last 6 starts) is on the mound and Heyward, Jones and McCann all need to be in the lineup.
It is not a do or die game, exactly, but still …

The Braves are rarely scoring without a home run, that really needs to change soon. The home runs are nice, but we are not a power team. Am I mistaken or have the Braves lost 3 of 4 with the Glaus double scoring Heyward from 1st being the only non-HR run scored?

Heyward is pretty good

It’s an amusing read over at Brew Crew ball. The rambling wanders from “Bobby Cox is senile” to " The Braves can go “f*ck themselves”, about how both Cox and Venters should be suspended, and how our fan base is stupid. Shockingly, however, not ONE thing is said about Fielder going out of his way to try and tackle González. You see what you want to see I suppose.

"My God! Good news fans, the Braves are showing signs of life for the first time in weeks. As a matter of fact, they appear to be beating the crap out of each other."

After reading how relieved the other guys seem to be by not having Escobar, I am becoming a believer that it was simply a removal of a cancer.

I think Wren found a comparible defensive SS with some upside (if only for this season) and dumped Esco at the first opportunity.

Then let it play out...

why bitch about it. Some think Hart is playing over his head, with the Brewers demanding a huge price (going from the rumors of Sanchez or Bumgartner from the Giants) and there can be better value from Minor (like saying using what looks to be a promising young start and shipping out a current starter in the rotation over the off season for a 3B, CF, LF or prospect package). You obviously think Minor for Hart is a good deal. Neither of us actually know whether or not that’s true consider we don’t have a crystal ball to a) see what Minor can do in the bigs, or b) if Hart can keep this up or if he goes back to the production in 08 and 09. But that’s mu opinion on it, we’ve said our peace, agree to disagree and just let it lie seeing how things play out going forward..

So you understand my thoughts...

I think Hart COULD make us better. (Is this year his true level, or 08 and 09?) But then, a Diaz/Hinske platoon can do a lot of damage when both are on their games. Hart could be better than that, could be worse. I don’t think the chances are worth giving up a valuable young piece that could allow us to move a veteran starter in the offseason, which can free up money to address other needs and also bring back a better return than what Minor can bring back..

As you may have noticed, my overall idea is Hart just isn’t enough of an upgrade over Hinske/Diaz. If we’re paying a price to upgrade, why go for a marginal improvement. Why not go big and see what it’d cost to bring in a player that can truly be big time. We’ve got the young prospects to pay a huge premium for a premium player, like the probably untouchable Braun, or even a lesser guy like Mark Reynolds that can provide as much at the plate as Hart imo and be a Chipper replacement for next year.

by Mr. Sanchez on Jul 18, 2010 1:19 PM EDT up reply actions

First off…as much as i am comfortable with a guy that strikes out I ave no desire to see Mark reynolds on my team….i dont trust a guy who strikes out that much, bc he can’t trust him to produce consistently…but w/e to each his own.

I thought i characterized ur thoguhts on Hart, but maybe i messed up a bit…my thing is I think Hart is a least a sideways move this year (at best a big improvement) (there is a chance he falls off a cliff, but i dont few that as a reasonabel chance at this point, notwithstanding some wild fluctutation in luck based metrics)….and if we are trying to win this year, which by all accounts is the goal (evidenced by the statements from the FO) i dont see us waiting to the offseason, bc that doesnt make us any better now. I’m not sure I’m happy giving up Minor, if we could make some other package i would consider it, bc as you said he could be really valauble in another deal .

I think our feelings on HArt are about the same, with me being slightly more optimistic about his future. And then its a matter of you not wanting to trade a highly regarded prospect at a chance of getting better (or at least you want a more garuanteed chance).

I think we are close on this and ultimately it doenst matter what we think (just what Justin thinks)

Pretty well put...

and you’re close enough. I’m not so much opposed to moving Minor, although of course would prefer not to, but my thought is more on Hart. Is he like the first half this year and his rookie year, or like his last two years? That and I think a healthy Diaz makes for one helluva platoon for LF (even better if McLouth can refind his stroke opening up Melky to play there). Just a simple difference of opinion I guess, with both Reynolds and Hart having their reasons for and against.

by Mr. Sanchez on Jul 18, 2010 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions

On Reynolds, I'd agree on the Ks...

but he’s put up some pretty strong #s the last two years otherwise, and he’s relatively cheap the next two years replacing Chipper until Salcedo or Leonard is ready. That would be the primary motivation behind why I’d like acquiring him, his ability to play 3rd next year and the year after. I think he has that right handed power that could help now, and is better than any other option for 3B out there when you factor in recent production and price (I’d rather have Beltre than him, but he’d cost a LOT more).

by Mr. Sanchez on Jul 18, 2010 1:38 PM EDT up reply actions

I would love Beltre…and i think he is a reasonable option depedning on much he is looking for a 3-4 year deal at 10M a year would be wonderful in my mind…I just don’t know if that will be enough.

with Chipper’s money off the books and hopefully unloading Lowe or KK we would have monye for raises and what not.

Why would we go after the Brewers, a team that essentially means nothing to us? Do we ever hit other guys after they hit home runs? No. Its not like Ryan Howard is exactly gracious when he hits them against us, but we don’t go out and hit him. But I guess Bobby must just have something against his shitty team. Come On

Prince jacks a long HR, shows up the Braves on the follow through and bat flip. Venters subsequently throws one over his head then puts one right on target between the shoulder blades. If you don’t think that’s a purposeful message then you know a lot less about the workings of baseball than I ever thought. Come on.

the plunk may have been on purpose but it had nothing to do with his swing. Prince has a big swing, It may have been because of Gonzales getting hit, or because Prince is a massive douche bag. On the other hand, it may have been an accident, Brewers fans need to forget it and stop their bitching. When they were saying “Bobby is classless” it shows how cluelss they are, since Bobby is known as one of the classiest guys in baseball

Fielders slide wasn't out of the ordinary...

He was trying to break up the double play. It was an aggressive slide, so be it. I’ve seen it multiple times from multiple Braves players over the years.
His swing has not changed one iota over the years. That’s how it looks when he swings hard. It was the same swing on his double from Friday night.
Matt Diaz had some great post-game comments about Prince, said he played with him in the minors and he likes to crowd the plate so he gets hit a lot, but at the same time he understood why he was upset, getting hit by Hanson then getting buzzed and then getting hit between the numbers on the very next pitch? Diaz said he totally understood the anger.

by inertia53 on Jul 18, 2010 10:59 AM EDT reply actions

false

given the prior ejections, Fielder absolutely should have been tossed for a slide like that. It was late, rough, and obviously intended to hurt someone. He actually had to get out of the way of the throw, b/c his fat ass was too far from the bag, and he started up again full speed (so like 2 mph) just to get at A-Gonz.

An aggressive slide is totally fine, even sometimes when the ball has been cleared easily beforehand. Going in obviously angry, immediately following the ejections, after being plunked, is bullshit bush league.

Prince went out of his way to do that after he had been tagged out. He line Gonzales up. If he wanted to retaliate he should have gotten Venters while he had the chance. Remember this is the same player who tried to go to the opposing team’s locker room last year and fight the potcher after the game.

by Shoert on Jul 18, 2010 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions

No tantrum...

But the aggressive slides into 2nd have happened from Braves players.
Prince is a professional player and I don’t think he’d try to hurt a guy intentionally, ESPECIALLY with all the money that he’s got on the table right now. He plays the game hard, I like that. I wish I could see the video of that slide again though.

by inertia53 on Jul 18, 2010 11:10 AM EDT up reply actions

There is nothing wrong with aggressive slides, but Prince was being a punk. He stayed out there tying his shoes to “claim the ground” or something. Start Chavez, bring Lowe in from the bullpen after tagging Prince again!

This is the definitive look at Fielder’s swing. Notice not even the exagerrated bat swing guy taking one hand off the bat and holding it up in the air like Fielder did.

I don’t know if he deserved getting plunked. But this slide at second was his weak attempt at a retaliation. He slid well after the throw was gone and about 7 feet from second base. I say hit him again. He’s one of only 2 good hitters in there lineup. Get him off the plate.

The Brewers are a bad team. Look at their record. Rickie Weeks is a career .250 hitter. Casey McGehee is 27 and is in his second real season. He’s cooled off considerably from his hot start. Perfectly reasonable to believe he isn’t going to hit like this.

And don’t get me started on Corey Hart. He is having a career year. But he is not a front line player. He’s never hit more than 24 homers in a year and he has 22 already. He’s never hit for 100 RBI’s, and he’s almost got 70 already. This is a fluke. He’ll regress to his mean, which is an average outfielder, nothing more, nothing less. There is no shame in that.

by ruxsin on Jul 18, 2010 12:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Your use of RBI stats does not really support your argument – especially considering that you somehow seem to be assuming that 2009 Corey Hart is legit and 2010 is not – when the truth of the matter is that 2010 is actually closer to the real Corey Hart.

Look at his other stats – LD%, K%, pitches that he is now laying off of that he always chased, etc. Don’t look at RBI. RBI is the hitting equivalent of a W-L record for SPs.

I understand those metrics. I was simply using RBIs as a rough indicator of his success. He’s only had an OPS over .800 once before in his career. Why is this year more indicative of his career than every other year of his career?

I’m assuming you’ve looked at his line drive and K rates because you mentioned them. Where can I look at them?

and as i mentioned his offensive production would be oodles higher if it wasnt for the fact that he is the worst defensive 2B in baseball (this fact is debatable there may be a worse guy, but im being bold)

and his defense would have no business in a discussion of how many good hitters the Brewers have

according to B-R his career WAR is 6…which is 4 better than 2, so you are in fact missing something. and thats if we use B-R’s nbrs, which I’m not inclined to do. I’d rather use fangrpahs which has him at 10 WAR, which is 8 better than 2.

Certainly not “below 2” as you claim.

No it isn’t. A horrible WAR is -X. Anything positive is not horrible, and 1.8 at the midway point of a season is borderline A/S level.

he has been playing since 2005 (disclaimer I am using fangrpahs WAR)

his first two years he only played 90 games and in 2006 he stil lput up 1 WAR (which i admit isnt great, but decent)

in 2007 he postd 3.1 WAR in 120 games
in 2008 he posted 2 WAR in 130 games
in 09 he was hurt and only played 37 games, still had 1.4 WAR
in 2010 in 90 games he has 2.5 WAR…

the biggest knock on him shoiuld be staying healthy…and his defense (which we agree has no place in this discussion)

also, a wOBA of 350 for his career is pretty good.

it is of some relevane, but if your not gonna look at the whole picture its irrelevant…

as a leadoff hitter he continually posts a 800 OPS or higher, steals 20 bases and hit HRs…

he is a horrible defender but that is really the only susbtantial knock on Weeks (unless you think he strikes out too much, which i can agree with to an extent, but he is still productive to make it worthwhile)

In RE: Hart….

he is playing over his head, but not by as much as most people think…his plate discipline has improved (last two years a respectable walk rate), his K rate is pretty much static (it is bound to go up when he is seeng more pitches with the improved plat discipline), his BABiP isn’t off his career numbers (317 vs 308 career). Only one thing is bound to drop and thats his HR/FB rate, 19 is too hgih for him but 23-24 is reasonable. and with that his SLG will fall from its current nbr of 575…but it would fall to 400 or something it will probably rest in the high 400s or low 500s. If I am right about this he is still an average defender at the corner wiht a 850 OPS and good pop. thats better than any OF we have …now i fully admit we need a consistent CF more than a Corner OF, but sometimes when you want to improve you have to make the move that helps even if it isnt in the place of most need.

But that’s the problem – RBIs are not an indicator of success. They are due more to the people in front of him.

This year isn’t more indicative of his career than other years. This year is more indicative than last year though, considering last year was WAY abnormal for him.

Definitive?

lol, ok.
Because every singe swing is exactly the same, right? I would say that batting stance has his normal swing down but the one-handed swing is something that comes out every once in a while when he swings really hard.

by inertia53 on Jul 18, 2010 11:33 AM EDT up reply actions

Obviously kidding about bat swing guy being definitive

But imagine seeing that swing from the bullpen. Probably pisses you off. So you hammer him with a slider.

Fielder can’t take a big ole swing like that if he’s got in the back of his head that he might get plunked. What the Braves did last night is as old as the game itself.

by ruxsin on Jul 18, 2010 11:37 AM EDT up reply actions

haha

Yeah, I know.
I just think that people who don’t watch him play on a consistent basis can’t judge a showboat swing. I watch and follow both the Brewers and Braves and I will say that it was not an intentional HBP but at the same time I understand why he’s a bit angry.
I don’t like that he went so hard at Gonzalez but I understand it. Prince isn’t a dirty player and I don’t think he’d ever try to go after a guy with intent to hurt him. I hope it doesn’t escalate today, two classy organizations don’t need to tarnish their seasons…especially the first place Braves.

i wasnt saying in reference to the Brewers…just in general what is the dividing line for a bad team. is it 500, or is there more that goes into it. because if a team is under 500, but there is reason to beleive they can and should be above 500 then do we make that correction (for example is a team one game below 500 a bad team, if they have played the hardest schedule)
