Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 7/13

The Braves have released second baseman Robert Brooks. You may remember Brooks from his 2008 season with the GCL Braves where he hit .329 with a .923 OPS and 12 steals in 48 games. As a 20 year old, he was a little old for the league, but he showed enough with the bat to make him a promising prospect. Unfortunately, before the 2009 season he broke his leg and was forced to sit out the whole year. He was still recovering this season and wasn't able to start playing until Danville's season started up. But, after just 4 games and only 14 plate appearance, in which he collected just 1 hit, it was determined that his injury was severe enough that he'll never be healthy enough to compete at a professional level. This is unfortunate for the Braves, because they lose a promising player, but even more so for Robert who had his promising career derailed by an accident. We wish him the best of luck in his life after baseball.

Gwinnett, Mississippi, Myrtle Beach, Rome, Danville - Off

  • T. Hess 4 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 3 K, SV (1), 5.40 ERA
  • One of the Braves teams decided to man up and play today. Matt Lipka continues to say hot, hitting .381 with a .803 OPS in his last 10 games. 16th rounder Dan Winnie and 19th rounder Tyler Hess combine for the shutout, striking out 7 along the way.

GCL Braves 13, DSL Blue Jays 5

  • G. Reyes 2-5, 2B, RBI, .299 AVG
  • L. Caballero 2-5, RBI, .300 AVG

  • H. Garcia 2-5, 2B, RBI, SB (12), .271 AVG
  • E. Herrera 2-5, 2 RBI, .333 AVG
  • Los Bravos de Dominicana decidido para jugar tambien. When the Braves honor their Minor League players of the year in Atlanta in September Aris Alcantra seems like a lock to be there. The 20 year old first baseman has hit .325 with a .925 OPS this year and is raking in his last 10, hitting .500 with 5 doubles, 3 triples, and 12 RBI. 19 year old Gerardo Ryes is hot as well, as the second baseman has hit .385 with a .890 OPS and 7 steals in his last 10 games.

Joe Leonard was promoted to Rome today too. Some other minor moves were made, but I am lazy and have forgotten them

I guess we won't be seeing Matt Fouch again until the 2013 season.

Truly a Hero regardless of what he does or doesn’t accomplish in his basball career. Godspeed Mr. Fouch, and thank you for risking everything to keep this great country safe!

Is that how long he’s going to be gone? So I’d say his pro career is over then. Good for him that he was so dominant in the short time he had.

I'm pretty sure the minimum commitment after graduating from West Point is 2 years.

If he did want to come back to baseball afterwards i don’t suppose he could just jump back into pitching right away, which is why I said 2013 and not 2012. I would think that the Braves would give him a chance to at least show up at minor league spring training if he wanted to see if he still has it.

Yeah, possibly. He was a low round pick so it’s not like they have a lot invested in him, but I suppose a look in ST couldn’t hurt anything.

    Unless it has changed

it used to alway be 4 years after graduating from one of the service acadamies but I have been out of the loop a bit since retiring 6 years ago.

It might be possible for the U.S. Army to be pesuaded to let him serve his commitment in a reserve status rather than active duty. That is probably his only real chance to develop a baseball career. The Braves would have had a plan or they wouldn’t have bothered with the time, effort, and money to scout, draft, and sign him to begin with.

Yes, we did. But I didn’t figure anyone was that concerned with the other guys. Juan and Chris are good guys, I wish them the best. Gonzalez has been around forever so I’m sure he’ll be fine. I’d honestly can’t remember ever hearing of Contreras.

The Braves also released second baseman Travis Jones yesterday to make room for Jodan Kreke on Myrtle Beach’s roster. Jones had six homers in 43 games with the Pelicans this season, but hit just .225. He hit 16 home runs in 2008 with the Pelicans when the team led all of minor league baseball with 89 victories, but didn’t continue that success at the Double-A level. Jones was a great person, and it’s going to be tough to see him go, but he did all he could to help young guys like Mycal Jones learn the ropes.

    Agreed...

hate to see him go, but his numbers just weren’t adding up to a prolonged stay. It was only a matter of time.

Also noticed we added a pick, 47th rounder Frank LaFrierre.

    Well, damn.

Guess the writing was on the wall, but I always hoped he could turn it around.

Appreciate you guys doing these MiLB recaps every night

This is my favorite feature of TC

It’s nice to know the history of a player when he gets called up or traded, as opposed to saying “who is the new first baseman” next year.
