Around SBN: An Indy 500 Rookie's Impressions

From Rob Neyer's most recent chat on ESPN.com:

Josh S. (Philly)
Who ends up winning the NL East?

Rob Neyer (12:05 PM)
I think the Braves are probably the best team in the division, particularly if Heyward comes back strong. But it's not going to be easy.

Bob Rooney (Worcester, MA)
Omar Infante, worst All Star ever?

Rob Neyer (12:23 PM)
Nah, I doubt it. There have been some really strange ones over the years, including a lot of catchers you've never heard of. But I'll bet Infante's in the top 20.

Brandon (Springfield)
Should the Braves make a move for Corey Hart? Do you believe he is having a fluke season so far?

Rob Neyer (12:44 PM)
A little bit, maybe. But I think last season was the bigger fluke. Hart's a legitimate power hitter and could help a lot of clubs.

KC (ATL)
Do you think the Braves have the pitching to win in the post season, or are they set up to win a lot of regular season games? Other than Tommy Hanson, it does not seem like a bunch of power arms...

Rob Neyer (12:59 PM)
Power arms are nice, but they're not a necessity if you're doing everything else well. I would take that rotation to war in October.

When will this “power-arm = postseason success” meme die?

when someone shows evidence that its not true…power arms are a cornerstone of most championship teams. they are a cornerstone of most good teams

Heyward,Hanson, and Shaffer r ready now!! Why do you think they havent signed the "right handed bat"?

While I like the rotation, even DLowe, in the playoffs, what gives us the edge is a deeper bullpen than anyone else, including the Yankees.

the Yankees have never had a deep pen..they just have the best closer of all time…they struggle to get to him constantly and still do.

I wouldn’t say of “all time”.

Of his time, certainly. Of all time? Meh.

All time.

Not even close.

Eckersly was dominant for all of five years. Hoffman has just 50 more saves with three more years closing games. Everyone else is at least a tier below.

Since he’s been closing full-time, Rivera’s had only one season with fewer than 30 saves, and he had 28 then despite the fact that he was on the DL three times.

You’re going to have to come up with some compelling evidence (which doesn’t exist, incidentally) to put anyone ahead of Mariano as a closer. His numbers literally crush everyone else’s.

The problem with that is you are using an abstract stat – the save – as your only evidence.

And that he’s forgetting about John Smoltz.

“Never” seems a bit harsh. They’ve had good pens during their glory run in the latter 90s. Now, not so much.

I like what Neyer said about Hart. I know he’s playing over his head, but those are my exact sentiments.

He’s not as good as he is hitting right now, and he’s not as bad as he was last year…but id be he is closer to this year than last years performance…

I just worry he is inches at any moment to regressing at the guy who swings at shit he cant hit (anything off speed on the outer half of the plate)

I know it’s a rather volatile subject around here, but Corey Hart reminds me an awful lot of Frenchy. Hart’s numbers last year were what we came to know, and his numbers this year are the best case scenario…

What of '07, then?
