Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 7/12

JJ Hoover dominated tonight to help the Myrtle Beach Pelicans sweep a double header.

Gwinnett - Off

SL North 3, SL South 2

  • O. Mercado 0-1
  • W. Cabrera 1-4, 2 K
  • M. Gomez 0-2
  • B. Beachy 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 K

The Missississippi Braves had 5 representatives on the Southern League South Division squad, with Cody Johnson unable to play due to injury. Willie Cabrera played the whole game as the DH, collecting a single while striking out twice. Brandon Beachy continued his great season, pitching a scoreless third inning while striking out 2.

Myrtle Beach 4, Wilmington 2 - Game 1

  • D. Nelson 1-4, RBI, SB (5), .277 AVG
  • R. Delgado 5 IP, 2 ER, 3 H, 5 BB, 3 K, W (4), 2.85 ERA
  • L. Avilan 2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 2 K, SV (5), 2.61 ERA

The Pelicans managed just 5 singles, but took advantage of 2 Blue Rocks errors to score 2 unearned runs. Randall Delgado was a bit wild in this one, allowing 5 walks, but he managed to escape with just 2 runs crossing the plate, good enough to earn him the win. Luis Avilan pitched a great 2 innings to pick up his 5th save and the 21 year old lefty is really making a name for himself this season.

Myrtle Beach 3, Wilmington 1 - Game 2

  • C. Harrilchak 3-4, 2B, 3B, RBI, .260 AVG
  • D. Nelson 2-3, HR (8), 2 RBI, .283 AVG
  • JJ Hoover 6 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 1 BB, 9 K, W (7), 3.69 ERA
  • A. Paulino 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 2 K, SV (2), 2.60 ERA

The Pelicans swept the double header after pounding out 8 hits, 4 of them for extra bases, in the nightcap. After going 4-4 on June 6th, Cory Harrilchak had been hitless in his last 4 games, but he collected 3 tonight, with a double and a triple mixed in. Dan Nelson has played for 4 teams at 2 levels this season, but he's had the most success with Myrtle Beach, hitting .283 with a .824 OPS in 43 games with the Pelicans. JJ Hoover was fantastic, striking out 9 en route to his 7th win.

Rome 2, Charleston 3

  • J. Hanson 1-4, 3B, .260 AVG
  • T. Cunningham 1-4, HR (1), RBI, .284 AVG
  • R. Flores 1-4, 2B, RBI, .217 AVG
  • C. Masters 5 IP, 1 ER, 6 H, 0 BB, 3 K, 2.93 ERA
  • M. Fouch 1 IP. 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 0 K, 0.00 ERA

Rome couldn't manage to pair any of their hits together, but Todd Cunningham did slug out his first homer as a professional. After struggling recently, Chris Masters had a nice comeback tonight, allowing just 1 run over 5 innings. Still, the lefty hasn't gone deep in many games this year, averaging out to less than 5 innings an appearance this season. For a player who's already considered old for his league, this isn't a good trend. With 9 innings under his belt now, Matt Fouch still hasn't given up a run as a professional.

Danville 0, Pulaski 6

  • J. Dalfonso 1-3, 2B, BB, .364 AVG
  • R. Pacheco 3.2 IP, 5 ER, 7 H, 1 BB, 3 K, 6.59 ERA
  • R. Weber 4.1 IP, 1 ER, 2 H, 0 BB, 4 K, 1.25 ERA

The D-Braves couldn't muster and offense and their starter got rocked. But, Ryan Weber continues his fantastic work since getting sent down from Rome. With a 1.25 ERA and a 0.69 WHIP in 21.2 innings for Danville he looks much more like the promising pitcher we saw last season.

GCL Braves 14, GCL Yankees 10

  • M. Lipka 2-5, RBI, .308 AVG
  • D. Rohm 3-4, 3B, HR (1), 7 RBI, BB, .302 AVG
  • B. Drury 2-5, RBI, .222 AVG
  • C. Brownsten 3-5, 2B, 3B, 2 RBI, .367 AVG
  • V. Cadette 3-5, RBI, .235 AVG

The Orlando Braves were down 9-7 going into the top of the 8th and they proceeded to drub the Yankees for 7 runs in that frame. Matt Lipka drove in the first run with a bases loaded walk, then Kurt Fleming was hit by a pitch to drive in the next run. William Beckwith hit into an RBI force out and was driven in, along with Edison Sanchez, by a David Rohm triple. Rohm was driven in by a Brandon Drury single, and he scored the final run on a Cory Brownsten triple. A whole bunch of other stuff happened that inning, but those were the highlights. Rohm had one of the best days of any Braves farmhand this season, driving in 7 while hitting his first professional homer.

DSL Braves 8, DSL Tigers 4

  • G. Reyes 2-5, 2 RBI, SB (15), .295 AVG
  • A. Alcantra 1-3, 2B, RBI, 2 BB, .313 AVG
  • E. Daniel 2-3, 2B, BB, .167 AVG
  • R. Rijkhof 1-5, RBI, .083 AVG
  • H. Garcia 2-4, RBI, SB (11), .265 AVG
  • J. Saldeno 7 IP, 1 ER, 2 H, 0 BB, 7 K, W (3), 2.37 ERA

17 year old Jesus Saldeno continues to dazzle in his first season as a pro, striking out 7 while walking none. 19 year old Gerardo Reyes has also been having a fine season as the team's leadoff hitter, and he's been even better in his last 10, with a .368 average and .837 OPS to go with 7 steals. 18 year old Dutch native Ruben Rijkhof, one of the Braves signees from their Tenerife complex, played just the 4th game of his career, and just the second of this month, but he did pick up his first professional RBI.

Dang, cb — I JUST got home from the Southern League All-Star game (met up with SidGlaus) and you already have the recap up!! Yeah, Willie had trouble laying off of high fastballs. Mercado was 0-1, by was also plunked by a pitch. Beachy looked best of the Braves squad — gave up a routine fly to center and sent two of the Northern Stars back to the bench with bats in tow.

I did manage to get Mr. Tripp’s attention and passed along your greeting to him — got a look of recognition and a “Hey, what’s up?” in response. He got to play the whole game – don’t believe he got a hit, but just missed a homer at the RF corner. It was some other kid from the Jacksonville Suns, though — 3B Matt Domniguez — providing most of the offense. 2 homers plus another hit in the South’s 3-2 loss.

I will have a couple of photos to upload… if I can figure out where to send them.

It’s easy for me to get the recap up fast when I don’t have a game to go to. Glad you had fun man, AS games are the best. Dominguez is a good player, I’ve seen him several times and while I can’t believe they picked him instead of Heyward, he’s still a good player.

7 RBI from Rohm? Isn’t he like 24 years old? Dude should be getting 7 rbi a game.

Haha, he’s 20, so it’s not that bad. But he is doing what he should be doing, hitting well. He could stand to be slugging better, but tonight might be a good start for that.

You might be thinking of Evan Gattis.

A catcher who was drafted this year, but is already 23 and, predictably, tearing up the Appy league.
