MLB Draft Open Thread: Day 1
The MLB First Year Player Draft is finally here, and in Prime Time! The draft starts at 7pm, with a pre-draft show at 6pm on the MLB Network. The Braves have one pick tonight, the overall number-35 selection, which is in the supplemental first round. If you have not yet heard, Atlanta had to surrender their first-round pick to Boston because they signed Billy Wagner. The Braves got the 35th pick as compensation for the Orioles signing of Mike Gonzalez (their first round pick was protected, but the Braves do get their second-round pick).
For those of you who want some massive in-depth information on the kids who get drafted, go to MLB Bonus Baby (SB Nation's MLB Draft Blog -- yes, SB Nation covers everything) and pick up your copy of their 2010 MLB Draft Notebook. It's 755 profiles (nice number!), and draft profiles for all 30 teams, for only $9.99. It's also a good way to support independent scouts like Andy Seiler who put the book together. It's via PDF, so if you buy it today, you'll have it today.
If you'd like, in the comments go ahead and toss out your guess for who you think the Braves will pick at number-35. Even though a lot of people have him going at the end of the first round and not lasting into the supplemental round, I'm going go out on a limb and say that Cam Bedrosian will fall to the Braves at 35. Even though the Braves say they're going to focus on bats, they won't be able to pass up little-Bedrock if he's still on the board.

Austin Wilson falls to 35. Heyward’s ascension to stardom pushes him over the edge and he signs for $1.2 million.
You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one.

if we do get Wilson
we’ll have an impressive bunch of smartypants, or players who have connections with smartypants schools in our organization:
Wilson (Stanford, parents: MIT, Stanford, Harvard MBAs)
Minor (Vanderbilt)
Hale (Princeton)
Heyward (UCLA, parents: Dartmouth)
before you curse out rafael soriano (like i did) for costing us picks
here’s Keith Law’s take on this year’s draft:
I think this is the worst crop of draftable talent since I got into the business full-time in 2002.
plus, Salcedo fills in nicely as a 1st rounder in my eyes.

Agreed
A good international scouting and signing apparatus is always a nice thing to have to suppliment your draft.
Speaking of those words…our pick is listed above as being available in the “supplimental first round.” Does that make him a “sandwich pick”?

It's silly
But I just love that term. Seems like a great way to start your professional career.
Probably wouldn’t be so much fun for a guy like Prince Fielder.

can we have a special draft version of NAHWAL?
worth 10 points or something like that?
i would definitely play it.
That’d be fun.

How about...
Jason’s lil bro, jacob heyward?
Nah, just kidding. The other JHey is 15. But people are already scouting him.

My take...
Why would the braves focus on hitting.
I think the object of every draft, in MLB is to just take the best players available. If we end up having a mega-surplus of pitching…. we can just trade for position players. The goal should be to accumulate value.
Too bad i don’t get mlb network…

My shot in the dark choice is kaleb cowart. Signability concerns will cause him to slip. I could see a few more teams this year saying screw you to bud selig’s slotting after last year’s fiasco. The commissioner’s office held out guys like minor because of a 10% decrease in slot values from 08 even though minor ended up signing for 08 slot money. If teams try to stick to slot and get screwed out of months of development time anyway, then why follow the stupid un-enforced system.
In reality, I’d have to guess Garin Cecchini, Aaron Shipman, or someone no one has ever heard of.
I really do think we should take a go at him if he's there at #35.
Either him or Austin Wilson. They would definitely be the BPA at that point.
What are the chances Drew Pomeranz is around at #35?

The Nationals are building themselves quite a compelling team with Strasburg, Harper (if he pans out), Zimmerman, and Storen, with some nice pieces like Desmond, Detwiler, etc. I’d like to see them become competitive, espeically for baseball in DC.
they're working on a package right now

How is their pitching so awful? So many injuries/busts.

Weren’t they the team who had selected a pitcher in the 1st round of 3 or 4 straight drafts and each one had to have shoulder or elbow surgery within 3 years? I’m pretty sure i remember that.

Yeah, I have to keep a mock draft in front of me to remember the players.
And even then its hard to form an opinion of a guy…especially since all you really see are brief scouting reports. So I just shrug and just watch for the guys that I like to see if they stay on the board.
Didnt the Mets get Ike Davis with the pick they got from us when we signed that guy who used to be Tom Glavine?

To be fair
Most Nats fans are fans of other teams for the most part. I mean, the Expos didn’t exactly bring a huge following to Washington, but most people in that area are Braves fans or Orioles fans (or Sox fans of course), so the Nationals until they start winning are second fiddle.
Btw, I’m totally seeing Strasburg tomorrow.

Hola all.
Sorry about my rage-drunk posts a few nights ago. Apparently I sipped down a entire bottle of anger juice. I apologize.
Also, reds got the steal of the draft so far in my opinion. I saw Grandal play a few times this spring and that guy is legit.

The whole night pretty much.
Especially the post game.
I still think peter moylan got unlucky though. If prado was playing in normal position rather than covering 2nd, thats at least one out. Not to mention the sweet play on Heyward’s LOLTHROW which was only outmatched by dewitt’s absurdly awesome slide.

lol we are lazy
We have traded away great players for less than nothing and let Texierra walk away, and much much more so pray that Hayward is sent from God and that his energy can ignite the veterans and cause the younger players to hustle more and play winning baseball...
Wow Angels take Clarke too
Everyone from GA is getting taken
angels
they’ve taken all georgia kids with their 3 picks
Was thinking the same thing.
6 of the first 31 are from GA. Wonder if that’s a record
Reggie Golden
Right now, Reggie Golden is at the top of my wish list. I also like what I have read about Zach Alvord. My fear is that Atlanta is going to go with a college hitter like Jarrod Parker or Austin Wates.
Forgot about him.
He’s a heck of a hitter. Heard him on the radio the other day. He ended up at Middle Tennessee State because he says Mississippi State told him that they were full in the outfield and needed a middle infielder. That’s a good reason why MSU is down right now.
Also got turned away from UT because they said they were full
and he was right in their backyard. Although I think it was between him and Kentrail Davis that year, and Davis turned out to be a stud as well.
Scouting Report on him suggests centerfield.
Report on him says he is a heck of an athlete that tends to pull off his pitches.
When you discuss who the best all-around athletes are nationwide in the 2010 MLB Draft, Matt Lipka is a player who should be right there. As an All-State receiver at McKinney (TX) HS, he put up numbers that made him a prospect for SEC and Big-12 schools. As a baseball player, he’s put up some right-handed running times that make him a 70 or 80 runner. Offensively, I lnever saw him as limited. I liked the guy in the summer. He traded power for a consistent approach this season. Over time, Lipka seems to have a very clear idea of what kind of player he envisions himself becoming.
is this you or a copy paste job?

matt lipka
76. Matt Lipka, ss
McKinney (Texas) HS
McKinney quarterback/righthander Zach Lee may continue to play two sports at Louisiana State, but his top wide receiver will focus on baseball, either in pro ball or at Alabama. A two-time 4-A all-state wide receiver in Texas, Lipka caught 22 touchdown passes from Lee last fall. He’s one of the fastest prospects in the draft, capable of running the 60-yard dash in 6.4 seconds. He’s a quick-twitch athlete with strength in his 6-foot-1, 190-pound frame. A righthanded hitter, he has strong hands and bat speed, though he gets jammed more than he should. He employs a line-drive stroke but has a chance for at least average power. Lipka has the athleticism and arm strength to play shortstop, but his hands and actions are questionable. He’ll get the opportunity to play shortstop as a pro, and he also profiles well as a center fielder. While Lee is considered one of the draft’s most unsignable players, Lipka should sign if he goes in the first three rounds as expected.
defensively, athleticism and arm strength are a lot more important than hands for a prospect.

Looks very raw.
Hopefully we can develop him well, and that he signs for cheap money.

I'm not big on drafting college players, but
Boston is getting some of the better ones. They have taken Kolbren Vitek, Bryce Brentz, and now Anthony Ranaudo. Of course, Ranaudo may have been used up in college.
Wow!
I can’t believe Bolden went this high. I didn’t even think he was the better prospect in Mississippi. I thought Jacoby Jones was. There must be more to Jacoby’s shoulder injury than meets the eye.
