6/4/10 - GBraves vs SWB Yankees (Schafer shows what he's capable of)

My wife and I attended the Gwinnett game on Friday night.  We had a 30 minute delay to the start as there was a T-Storm that rolled through at around 6:15 PM so they had to dry off the field.  Anyway, Jordan Schafer and Matt Young stole the show in this game.  Schafer batted leadoff and showed why he was a top prospect a few years ago as he truly set the table for the Braves.  Matt Young made a game saving diving catch at the fence in the top of the 8th to preserve the lead for the Braves (I was too busy watching and not photographing that play unfortunately, but it was on the other side of the field and it was DARK!) and he also contributed with a long 3B to left center field.  Tim Gustafson carried a no hitter into the 5th or 6th inning too, as there was an all around great performance by the team.  Mitch Jones also had a cameo at first base, so now onto the pictures (and eventually the videos).

Pictures after the Jump.

Freddie Freeman (didn't play as he was still nursing his sore knee) talks to one of the GBraves staff (who consequently was the one who decided to not keep me on as the photography intern) before the game.

Canizares is off by about a foot on that swing. Great pics.

Actually he’s not…he’s already hit the ball and that’s the ball moving away from him. Although it was just a popup, so he did miss it.

That makes a lot more sense. I posted that right after I woke up, not thinking clearly I guess.

Great pics, and lol at the Wes Timmons one! Are you going to The Ted this season? I’d love to see your pics from Atl Braves.

It's deja vu all over again.

I might make it to the Ted for a game or two this year…but not sure how well the photos will go though since they supposedly don’t allow any lenses over 6" in, and I don’t think any of my lenses are less than 6"!

We’ll see though. Thanks for the comments.

are your lenses the huge 400-500mm ones that most sports photographers use? they must be hella expensive

are you shooting from the stands or the photographer’s camera well? you did mention you were a GBraves photog intern, so that’s why I ask.

by atl192485 on Jun 7, 2010 12:49 PM EDT up reply actions

I have the 300mm f/2.8, but it’s big enough. I’ll occasionally throw on the 1.4x Teleconverter to get to 420mm, but that’s only if it’s a day game or in the first couple of innings of a night game.

I’m in the stands, not the well. The well is only for the team and credentialed photogs. I was SUPPOSED to be one of their photography interns, but they decided to sever our relationship for reasons I’m still not completely clear on and won’t go into on a public forum. I obviously was not happy about their decision, but what’s done is done.

Sweet pics from you as usual.

I admit I did cringe when I saw the pic of Jordan Schafer sliding into home. That has to be hard on his healing wrist. :(

Thanks, and yes I was afraid the collision at home would be bad for Schafer. However, it appears he is wearing some sort of protector over the wrist when he’s on the basepaths. You can see he doesn’t have it here after batting

But does have it on here while running the bases (it’s his left wrist that was hurt)

His head looks tiny in that helmet.

And it goes without saying, thanks for the awesome pics. Her loss is our gain, and we really appreciate it.

Hahahaha, yeah teh helmet looks waaay too big on him

The new minor league helmets look big on everyone…because they are big and bulky. Think Dark Helmet from Spaceballs…so unless you have a huge head, it’s going to look like you’re a little leaguer wearing the helmet that doesn’t fit.

I guess safety is more important, but none of the players like it. Plus they’re all dual flapped.

by Dave_D on Jun 7, 2010 4:53 PM EDT up reply actions

They are ridiculous. The sad thing is you get used to them after a while and only notice how dumb they look when you see a guy like Jordan, who’s pretty skinny, wearing one.

Exactly CB…they look huge on Jordan and Wes Timmons…makes them both look like little leaguers really.

I guess they’re necessary though since they are safer…and I’m pretty used to them.

My first thought when seeing the Alex Romero pic...

Was, “What is Kawakami doing in Gwinnett?”

Glad Schafer wasn’t hurt on that slide. Good job getting a picture of his face, because that. is. awesome.

Sweet pictures.

Hopefully Jordan can get back in the swing of things. I’d like to see him in our outfield next year.

Same here

If Nate is traded, DFA, or released, I would absolutely love a HInske/Diaz-Schafer-Heyward outfield next year.

Great Pics

No offense, Dave, but if that girl (in the first pic) was also competing for an internship, I would have kept her too.

She wasn’t competing, she would have been my boss. The picture of her above is the most flattering I could find (and also doesn’t show her face, which works on both counts). ;-)

If she’s the one I remember seeing down there, she ain’t that cute.

Great pics

Good to hear Schafer leading off. I hope he gets comfortable their because he really could be the leadoff were looking for.

by Braves24 on Jun 9, 2010 1:30 AM EDT reply actions

I agree, I think he is the solution long term to the leadoff spot as long as he can hit consistently, not strike out as much and keep stealing a few bases.
