Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 6/29
Gwinnett 7, Toldeo 3
Ryne Reynoso had one of his best games of the season, striking out 8 batters en route to his second win of the season. Several Gwinnett hitters have been on a tear lately as Matt Young is hitting .475 with a 1.133 OPS in his last 10 games and Freddie Freeman is hitting .359 with a 1.038 OPS in that same span. Diory Hernandez has been hot since returning from a leg injury that kept him out until mid-June, hitting .357 in the 11 games he's appeared in this season.
Mississippi - Postponed, Rain
Myrtle Beach 1, Lynchburg 6
The Pelicans only had 2 hits tonight and it shouldn't be any surprise that one of them came off the bat of Myke Jones. The athletic shortstop has been great in his 16 games for Myrtle Beach, hitting .362 with a .899 OPS, and his total season line between Rome and Myrtle Beach is impressive as well, with a .287 average and .761 OPS to go along with 7 homers and 12 stolen bases. Matt Crim took the loss, allowing 4 unearned runs with the help of errors by Travis Jones and Samuel Sime. Brett Oberholtzer made a fantastic return after 3 weeks on the disabled list and while he probably won't stay in the bullpen it's good to know he could be effective in that role.
Rome 3, Greensboro 4
For everyone wondering, no, Edward Salcedo did not play in this game. Maybe tomorrow, maybe the day after, but certainly soon. Patience, my friends. It was good to see Robinson Lopez come back solidly after giving up 5 runs in just 1 inning in his last start. David Hale took the loss tonight, even though he only gave up 1 unearned run. If the Braves are planning on turning Todd Cunningham into an outfield it doesn't look like it's going to happen during the season, but if he has lots of games like this nobody is going to care where he's playing on the field.
Danville 8, Elizabethton 12
The D-Braves busted out the hits tonight, but unfortunately Aaron Northgraft gave up 7 runs in 3 innings to start the game. 21 year old third baseman Joey Terdoslavich, selected in the 6th round this year, has gotten his career off to a great start, and continued that trend with a 3 hit, 3 RBI day. Evan Gattis, a 22 year old catcher who was selected in the 23rd round this year, had a perfect day with 4 hits. Daniel Falcon knocked out his first homer of the year, but also took home the Golden Sombrero.
GCL Braves 6, GCL Phillies 12
Zeke Spruill made his first apperance since breaking his hand in April, throwing a scoreless inning. After that the floodgates opened as 18 year old righthander Ernesto Silva allowed 10 runs, 8 earned, in just 1.2 innings. This year's first round pick, shortstop Matt Lipka had a great day, reaching base 3 times and driving in 2 runs.
DSL Braves 1, DSL Angels 4
18 year old catcher Elisaul Herrera hit the first homer of his professional career and he's been great in a small sample size, with a .444 average and a 1.393 OPS in 9 at bats. 17 year old Jesus Saldeno has been a bit hittable after his hot start, but he's still been very impressive. I'd love to hear the story on 27 year old Ronald Luna, not only because it's strange for a player that old to be in the DSL, but also because hitting just .204 with a .506 OPS in 119 plate apperances there last year he's made a complete turnaround with a .386 average and a .844 OPS in 88 plate apperances this year. Weird stuff.

Great to see big Freddie Freeman hitting so well
I love Glaus, but the fact is that Freeman is the future. Not to mention I wouldn’t wanna touch a Glaus contract for 3-4 years, which is probably what he’ll get this offseason.

Travis Jones
I had no idea he had been demoted, but it looks like the move was warranted. I had high hopes for him after watching him play at South Carolina. He was part of a couple really good infields with James Darnell, Reese Havens, and Justin Smoak. Maybe he can get his career back on track…his numbers are pretty good in his return to MB, but he’s obviously old for the league and his BA is still pretty low.
Anyway, go Cocks.
The good thing is that Travis handled the demotion the right way. He didn’t pout, he just put his head down and took care of what he needed to. He’s been working hard and is dominating the level the way a guy with his age and experience should. He’s always been a low average hitter, but he uses that thick frame of his to generate some good pop, mostly through doubles. With the complete lack of 2B prospects in the system I have little doubt he’ll get another shot to prove himself at AA, though maybe not this season since the Braves seem committed to letting the Pelicans try to win a second half title.

I think it says a lot about a player when they don’t pout or make a stink about being demoted if they are not performing. The bottom line as a minor leaguer is that they’re not going to promote you just because you’ve played at a level before. If you perform, you get promoted or get to stay at the level you’re at, plain and simple. One of my co-workers was talking to me about her friend’s son who’s in the minor leagues somewhere and how he was bitching and moaning to his parents about not getting a chance to move up to the next level and how the team didn’t seem to care about his development. So I looked up his stats and as a 3B he’s not hitting for hardly any power, or really for a good average. I guess it’s harder to see when you’re the player going out there busting your ass everyday…but that’s the truth to the matter. Perform and you will move on.
It is amazing how some guys don’t have any perspective on how their performance actually looks. Fortunately most of the guys I talk to, not just with the Braves, but with other teams, are completely aware of how they’re performing and how that looks to their team and other teams, for better or worse.

Also, nice to see the Gamecocks win, especially since Ethan Carter, a local boy from just up the road in Newport News, Va, was on the team.

Thank you, sir
Gamecocks are bringing the title to the stadium this afternoon. It’s going to be too much fun. And thanks for the report on TJ – one more reason to be proud of my alma mater today.
Ethan Carter’s a lucky, lucky man. He very nearly picked up the loss. Would have been too bad, because he really is a good pitcher.
Cody Johnson
I know Mississippi was off today but I havent seen Cody Johnson’s name mentioned in any of these write ups for a while. I’m aware he’s been struggling all year but is he even in the lineups these days? Injured?
Cody severely injured his hamstring right at the start of June. It’s bad enough that he noticeably limps when he walks. This has limited not only his playing time but his performance. In the last 13 days he’s only had 2 plate appearances, both as a pinch hitter.

CB…not trying to nitpick but just to let you know, Diory was out with a shoulder injury that he injured in winter ball…
Just an FYI. :-)
Also,...
it should read about Cunningham if they are turning him into an infielder, not “outfield”. But then at 2-3 in the morning, minor slips like that aren’t unexpected, and the sentence can easily be understood as intended.
I’m not fixing any of this. Ever.

yes he does, but with no real job or anything he can choose the hours he sleeps. He normally chooses 3am to noon from what I hear

Matt Young
Looking forward to seeing Matt in “The Show” at some point in 2010. Works hard and brings hustle to every game. He will be a great addition to a team that needs some speed.
What's going on with Jordan Schafer?
I haven’t seen his name in a while. I assume he’s injured. How bad is it?
Braves Win! Braves Win!
He's been playing.
Just not really well. He went 1-4 yesterday.
He’s not injured, he just hasn’t had the kind of games that are worthwhile enough to put his name on the list. He’s actually on a 7 game hitting streak right now, hitting .233 in that span. It’s odd, because streaks are always impressive, but that’s one of the more underwhelming ones I’ve seen.

8 if you take out June 20, where he was a defensive replacement in the top of the 9th...
and the game ended then. But then, 8 games, all with just one hit. Not bad, but nothing special either. Just keep grindin Logan.

He’ll get better as he gets more reps. He’s basically been out for a full year now…it’s hard to get back up to game speed after being out that long. I played my first game of softball a couple of weeks ago after taking a year off (I know, not the same speed as baseball) but it did take me a while to get my timing back none the less.
Thanks for the responses guys.
I’m glad to here that he is healthy. Very happy to see that Freeman is starting to rake. I hope to see them both on the roster next season.
Braves Win! Braves Win!
Freeman is on a tear.
And, seriously, why are they using Tyler Stovall in relief? Good to see him work two innings, rather than 1, this time at least.

He'll probably be forced into action next season
If not at the start of the year, by June, probably. Braves aren’t going to sign any free agent first baseman to a multi-year deal, and probably won’t pay anyone more than $2-3 million. Maybe they’ll get Russel Branyan if he can’t find any takers on a two year deal, but I still see Freeman playing next season.
