Braves Quote For The Day... Convincing Wags To Stay
From DOB's blog today about Peter Moylan trying to convince Billy Wagner to continue to pitch next year:
"Oh, no," said Moylan, one of Wagner’s biggest fans. "He still loves it. You can tell he still loves it. And I’m still convincing him every day, trying to get him to come back another year."
Keep working on him, Peter. Keep working on him.
Remember when some people were worried about this year's pen?

33 strikeouts and 8 walks? That’ll do.
And I always like the Wagner signing. Saito…not so much.

So far, yes. I’m still worried about that arm though.

Which is just as likely to fall off...
as Moylan’s, O’Flaherty’s, or Wagner’s. Saito has been fine, and even if he does go down, we got Kimbrel and others. He’s been a good signing and much better than say Lyon, Rodney, or any of the other former closers that were available and more expensive.
Amen to that
I shudder at the thought of having Rodney or Lyon at the end of the game for us. Yuck.

Moylan and EOF aren’t 40 though.
And agreed about Lyon and Rodney. That would’ve been a disaster.

Or keeping Gonzo, disastrous too...
and don’t get me wrong, I always liked him and he is certainly a better pitcher than either Lyon or Rodney imo. But after their usage last year, it was almost guaranteed that one of Gonzalez or Soriano went down this year. And Gonzo is that one, if not Soriano later (except he’s playing for a contract, and in his history that guarantees his good health).
And just cause Moylan and EOF aren’t 40 doesn’t mean they aren’t possible to go down. Relievers are pretty much all a roll of the dice on health from year to year and month to month. Saito no more than any other. Besides he wasn’t used harsh last year in that deep Red Sox pen, so aside from age, he seems a safer bet to me than our two departed closers, among others.
If Bobby can just remember
not to use him 3 straight nights or anything else like that, he’ll be just fine. Even Bobby should be able to learn to not use a 40 year old 3 straight nights, right?

The’ve both worked out great, though. The only times Saito has been bad has been when Bobby has clearly overworked him. Other than that, he’s been dominant.
I’m so glad we have Wags and Saito and not Soriano and Gonzalez. Wags and Saito are cheaper and better (Soriano is still good, but I still prefer Wagner).

Maybe we should
go all “Lebron” and start putting up billboards and making fan videos to convince him to stay

Good to know
Would love to see Wags close games for the Braves next year if he’s as able as he is now and actually wants to do it.

i have loved this pen since we signed both Wags and Saito
however to be honest (and I could be wrong) I think most, or at least some, of those against the signings were more worried about Bobby’s use of this year’s pen – i.e. repeatedly throwing a 38 and a 40 year old out there 3 consecutive nights or 5 times a week. Their worries will probably not be completely erased until the end of the year.
But I would love to see “the Sandman” there next year, once he’s able and willing of course
What if the bravos feel like kimbrel is ready to be our closer by next year? Do we block him for another year of wags?

He won't be "blocked"
He’ll just pitch the 7th or 8th inning.
Also, I think it’s getting a bit ahead of ourselves to assume Kimbrel is going to be ready to close any time soon. He’s very young and has not ironed out his control issues yet. I wouldn’t count on him being ready to close until 2012 at the earliest. Though I do want him in the pen by the end of this season, so he can get his feet wet vs. MLB competition.

THIS
And if I were predicting a non-Wags closer next year, it’d be Saito, Moylan, or Medlen, not Kimbrel.
Or
just to throw out a dark horse, a Jonny Venters / Kris Medlen L/R tag team.

Or
We sign or trade for a veteran arm to become our closer. Similar to what we did with Wags and Saito this year.

Well, sure.
But we might have more pressing needs (replacing Chipper, etc.).

I guess. Just giving an option since Kimbrel shouldn’t and won’t be our 2011 closer.

I'd like to think...
with the guys we have under contract and coming up, we won’t need to sign or trade for an arm for a few years and just use within.
no tag team...
they never seem to work. Medlen could do it, he gets good K rates and works lefties well. Saito has the experience, and has one more year left to offer him arbitration. Moylan just seems like the guy next in line, but you could argue he serves better value being able to use him every other day and in any situation than he would in a restricted role of closer.
I agree with this completely.
I think if we manage to keep Wagner next year, then we get rid of Saito and let Kimbrel be the setup man. He’d then transition to closer in 2012 after Wagner retires.

Sadly, I can't stay up for most of the games this series
School tomorrow and SAT Saturday and my computer can’t connect to the Internet right now I’m at the library.
Life Sucks.
if you are just now taking the SAT….let me tell you life does not suck for you yet …at least not if the worst that is going on is the School/SAT/Internet issues.

useful tip...
If you get hung up on one problem, don’t spend 10 minutes on it. Skip it. Go back to it later.

If I hadn’t been so hungover and sleep deprived when I took the SAT, I think I would have scored higher.
Maybe...
…But only a nerd would show up to the SAT test sober and well-rested.

Funny story about that....
The second time I took the SAT I took it still a little drunk from the night before and scored 100 points better on both categories.
Too bad that didn’t work out nearly as well for my college tests.

I've been in the tutoring field for a while now
and I can tell you 2 things that will help you right now besides the obvious (get some rest and so on).
1) Don’t study the day before. Give your brain a break.
2) If you’ve eliminated at least 1 answer, guessing is at least as good as leaving it blank. If you’ve eliminated 2 or more, guessing is always better than leaving it blank.

I was concerned about our bullpen when we brought in two guys whose combined ages would make them a candidate for Medicare and also had both suffered significant arm injuries. However, those two have been the least of the bullpen’s problem. So I can say that I clearly underestimated them.
Also, Jamie Kotsay can come whack my weeds any day of the week. Maybe twice on Sunday if I got a nap in.
