Braves' Salcedo Back In The States, Ready To Play For Rome
Dominican shortstop Edward Salcedo, who the Braves signed to a 1.6 million dollar bonus back in February, has returned to the United States and will begin his career in this country playing for the Braves' Low A affiliate, the Rome Braves.
Salcedo had originally come to America in the middle of March and taken part in Minor League Spring Training, but at some point in April he returned to his home in La Vega for undisclosed family issues and had trouble re-entering the US because of Visa issues. While there was nothing seriously wrong with his Visa, the 6'3", 195 pound, right handed hitting 18 year old shortstop was still forced to delay his American professional career.
In the interim, he played for the Braves' Dominican Summer League affiliate and showed off his tremendous potential, hitting .297 with a .885 OPS in 74 at bats over 23 games. He stole 8 bases and showed a knack for getting on base with 18 walks, good for a .453 OBP. He did commit 7 errors in those games, but many young shortstops commit a lot of errors at the lower levels, and, while they may be the best available in the country, the fields of the DSL don't compare to those in the US.
Salcedo will begin playing with the Rome Braves in the next few days, bolstering a lineup that has already recieved a staggering infusion of talent in the past few weeks. The 2009 Appalachian League MVP, Riaan Spanjer-Furstenburg, returned after missing 2 and a half months with a broken hand and has gone 6-19, with a pair of doubles and a triple in hist first 5 games. This year's second round pick, Todd Cunningham, began his professional career with Rome on June 20th, and has going 3-20 in the 6 games he's played. And 5th rounder Phil Gosselin has gotten his career off to a hot start after joining Rome on June 26th, going 4-11 in the 3 games he's played.

He’s been doing a great job down there, now I hope he continues that success over here.I wish him the best being we need some depth in our system at the position spots.

I agree with this quote
The sky is the limit for 18 year old shortstop Edward Salcedo.
He’s going to be fun to watch when he grows into his full potential. I look forward to seeing this kid playing at the Ted in a few years!
Chipper: "It has never been about money for me, and it never will be about money. It has always been about winning, comfort and playing for Bobby Cox."
Sweet!
Now we get to see what he can do against a more advanced group of players. Rome will be a big challenge. Let’s hope he can raise his game as he rises through the farm system.

Great, why can't Rome make a return trip to Augusta?...
and any word on Luis Valdez and his visa issues? Is that one we are just letting go?
Also, any word on Yasser Gomez (the Cuban CF) who was also supposedly having visa issues hold up his entry to the stateside system?
sorry man...
We came to Augusta last year on Labor Day weekend to end the season. It was fun and the fireworks were awesome. The only downside is that now we have a lot of Greenjackets stuff we can’t use…lol.
Don't get me wrong...
I enjoyed it when they came to town in May, but would like to see them again. I got to see Devall, Bethancourt, Lopez, Hale, Myke Jones, among others the first time. But Vizcaino pitched the day before and his turn missed the series, Salcedo was still having to work out his visa issues, and Teheran was called up to Myrtle about two weeks prior, so the top 3 prospects that I possibly COULD have seen weren’t on the field.
And before cb comes on and tells me to quit complaining and enjoy the great minor league baseball action I’m getting, let me remind him that you like ice cream don’t you? Don’t you like ice cream better when it’s covered in hot fudge, and mounds of whipped cream, and those crumpled up cookie things they put on top? Mmmm crumpled up oreos.
well, any chance you will make it to Rome? Seems that we’ve replenished our ice cream with all the toppings, they just aren’t all pitchers this half…..We have fun, I’m pretty sure CB and Gondee will vouch for that! :-)
If it wasn't for the 4 or 5 hour drive...
I’m a naturally stationary individual; not much for trips and travel, I like my home and my bed and familiar environs. Perhaps if I hit the $100m lottery, but not now when I’m just a poor young working man.

just to take her to the store for Kool’s and Franzia.
Utley to the DL
Prado can start in the All-Star game!!!!
If Jason Heyward were to hit a home run off of you, you would have to fight the urge to thank him.

polanco too
maybe if zimmerman gets an all star roster spot, that’ll be one less argument for strasburg to be on the team
It’d be cool to see him on the team but he’s had 5 mlb starts. Guys who have pitched the whole season deserve it much more

This may be true...
But all I know is that this game counts for home field advantage whether we like it or not. And we have a shot at the World Series this year, and we have been lights out at home. I want the best team we can put together, and Strasburg is on that team
I'm not so sure about that...
Peachtree made a good point last night: are there really twelve pitchers you would take before Strasburg?
For me, the answer is yes….
Jiminez, U.
Halladay, R.
Lincecum, T.
Carpenter, C.
Hudson, T.
Gallardo, Y.
Johnson, J.
Rodriguez, F.
Broxton, J.
Wagner, B.
Bell, H.
Capps, M.
I would take all 12 of those pitchers before Strasburg. Sorry.

I’ve seen strasburg dominate some bad teams, but the braves did pretty well off of him. I’d like to see him in the game to see him get roughed up and quiet the hall of famer talk for a while, but as far as both what’s fair and what’s good for the NL team, strasburg should stay home.
Hopefully….Prado deserves to start

Both Prado and Mac deserve to start.
And Wright or Zimmerman deserve to start over Polanco. Hell, even Chipper, with the way he’s been playing recently, would be a better idea than Placido.
And I have mixed feelings about Heyward not playing in the All-Star game now…

I’d like for Heyward to make the team, but not play. He needs extra rest. I think it would be good for him to hang out and talk with the veterans in the AS game

+1
This is only going to be his first of many ASG appearances. Let him take everything in I guess, and now he can deliver the walk-off HR next year with no nerves.
Sounds good to me.
