Braves removed Sammons from 40-man roster and activated INF Diory Hernandez from the 60-day DL. Hernandez was optioned to Triple-A.
From DOB
I could be wrong, but I thought a third catcher on the 40-man was more valuable than the fourth shortstop. They must have thought that Diory would be claimed... after coming off of an injury... right.

Something else brewing, perhaps?? I certainly agree with you: this seem like an odd move by itself.

Or Hicks, would he possibly be claimed with how he's hit in AAA?...
I doubt Jeff Lyman or Kyle Cofield would have been claimed either with how they’ve performed in AAA and AA this year.
Why Sammons, and why now? It just seems odd unless something is truly in the works (either a call up or a deal), and it would necessitate another move should Ross or McCann go down.
Yes.
He’s got one of the best IF gloves in the minors, and he’s young enough that he might hit eventually. I’d add Clevland to your list, too. Don’t see an MiLB journeyman having a middle of the road season getting claimed.

Clevlen is injured, so that might be a problem...
and really on Hicks? Yeah, great glove. But when you hit .237/.319/.373 in AA, and follow it up with .211/.294/.292 in AAA this year, even being 24 isn’t good enough. And even if he was claimed, with Diory and other good glove men like Wes Timmons around, it’s not that big of a loss. Hicks has hit .232 in the past 3 seasons above low A ball, and that’s not included his 0-5 with Atlanta this year. So no, he’s not “young enough that he might hit eventually”, he’s 24 and hasn’t shown the ability to hit at the AA level.
This. Hicks won’t change his approach at the plate, which is essentially Cody Johnson’s without the power threat. He doesn’t appear willing to make the adjustments to succeed at the higher levels. And if the Braves really cared about his development he wouldn’t spend weeks at a time on their bench not getting any bats.

Well I don’t think anyone is going to claim Sammons at all since he is not doing much of anything with the bat…but I agree, why not get rid of Diory off the 40 man now that you have Hicks on there??? Hicks is the better defender anyway.
But Diory is the better hitter. And his defense is solid enough. I’d take Diory in a heartbeat over Hicks at this point.
The reality is, nobody is going to claim Sammons and if they need a catcher they can make the move later and decide how to clear a spot then. It’s really not that big of a deal. If anything, the fact they’ve needed a SS to come up twice this year, a job that probably would have gone to a healthy Diory, is a clear sign that they need an extra infielder on the 40 man more than an extra catcher.

Escobar, Hicks or Diory getting traded?
The Orioles wanted a young SS for Ty Wigginton I really hope we aren’t targeting him
Hmm Escobar for Franklin Guiterez(sp?) ????
