Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 6/23

Ramon de los Santos' pinch hit grand slam sealed the win for the GCL Braves.

Gwinnett 4, Buffalo 5

  • M. Youg 3-4, 3B, .287 AVG
  • F. Freeman 3-4, RBI, .277 AVG
  • M. Jones 2-4, HR (13), 2 RBI, .263 AVG
  • T. Redmond 6 IP, 5 ER, 7 H, 0 BB, 6 K, 4.41 ERA
  • M. Dunn 2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 2 K, 0.79 ERA
  • C. Kimbrel 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 0 K, 1.17 ERA
  • The Baby Mets beat the Baby Braves tonight. It's amazing Gwinnett only scored 4 runs with 12 hits, but the craziest stat of the night is that Craig Kimbrel didn't strike anyone out. Mitch Jones is 6 for his last 8 with 2 homers and 3 RBI. Freddie Freeman extended his hitting streak to 12 games. In that span he's hitting .405 with a .980 OPS to go with a homer and 7 RBI.

    Mississippi 5, Mobile 7

  • M. Gomez 2-4, HR (7), 3 RBI, .253 AVG
  • E. Cordier 5.1 IP, 4 ER, 3 H, 5 BB, 4 K, 4.73 ERA
  • L. Hyde 1.2 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 3 K, 3.38 ERA
  • Maruo Gomez has proven to be a good acquisition, as the Minor League free agent has led the team in RBI while contributing as a steady force in the middle of the lineup. Erik Cordier actually pitched much better in this game than in the last one he pitched, where he got the win despite allowing 7 earned runs in 5 innings, but he couldn't pull out the win tonight.

    Myrtle Beach - Off

The Pelicans start their second half tomorrow in Woodbridge, VA when they face the Potomac Nationals. I'll be at the game, so if you're around the DC area come out, watch some future Atlanta Braves, and we'll talk some baseball.

    Rome - Off

Rome begins their second half tomorrow in Kentucky when they face the Lexington Legends. I won't be anywhere near this game.

    Danville 1, Princeton 0

  • A. Simmons 0-3, RBI, .000 AVG
  • J. Terdoslavich 1-4, 2B, .250 AVG
  • R. Weber 6 IP, 0 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 6 K, W (1), 0.00 ERA
  • R. Pacheco 3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 2 K, SV (1), 0.00 ERA
  • Andrelton Simmons didn't get a hit, but he did drive in the D-Braves' lone run tonight, plating Alberto Odreman on a sacrifice fly. After a fantastic showing with the GCL Braves last year, Ryan Weber had little success with Rome this season, with an 0-4 record, 7.33 ERA, and 1.63 WHIP in 23.1 innings, but he gets his Danville career off to a great start, shutting out the P-Rays over 6 frames. He's a talented, if tiny, pitcher, and he's still just 19 years old.

GCL Braves 12, GCL Blue Jays 6

  • M. Lipka 1-5, .231 AVG
  • E. Sanchez 1-2, RBI, 3 BB, .667 AVG
  • B. Drury 2-4, .250 AVG
  • D. Rohm 2-4, 2 RBI, SB (1), .571 AVG
  • K. Fleming 2-4, 3B, RBI, .154 AVG
  • C. Brownsten 2-3, .667 AVG
  • R. de los Santos 1-1, HR (1), 4 RBI, 1.000
  • E. Silva 3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 3 BB, 3 K, 0.00 ERA
  • Ramon de los Santos, in his first at bat of the season, hit a pinch hit grand slam in the 8th inning to seal the win for the Braves. This year's 8th and 9th round picks, Kurt Fleming and David Rohm, added 4 hits and a pair of RBI. Edison Sanchez must be converting to first base, because that's all he's played. He still seems like an exciting player, just 19 with a huge 6'4" frame, and you have to love the 3 walks today, but he's less excitng than he would be if he were staying at the hot corner.

Which Fleming is it that went 2-4 today? The 8th round pick, or the 30th round pick?

Very expensive for such little exclusive info. I used to have a subscription years ago, but ended up realizing that knowing 1 or 2 extra guys that they signed as Minor League free agents in the offseason just wasn’t worth the money. And that was years ago; now other sites, including this one, have caught up and Shanks’ insider info isn’t as insider anymore.

Plus, he stole gondeee’s job and is just kind of an arrogant d-bag to boot.

B-N knew of Heyward and Freeman’s promotion to AA last summer hours before Shanks reported on it. I just don’t see what he has that’s worth paying for, and I don’t really believe in paying to view content. That’s not the purpose of the web; people pay their ISP providers enough money to be subjected to advertisements all day; the internet is for the free exchange of ideas and knowledge, and I really believe it will be vitally important to whether or not we can sustain life into this century. We’re still really just learning how to effectively use this webernet thing; practically all the world’s knowledge is contained here; if you’re paying to learn something, I’d say save your money and learn about something else, because there’s just so much knowledge to be gained.

CB, do you see Simmons sticking at SS long term, or eventually taking a Sergio Santos career path?

I can’t honestly say because I haven’t seen him yet, but if the Braves were sold on him as a pitcher and only relented to letting him play SS to be able to sign him, that’s pretty telling. I guess we’ll have a good idea at the end of the summer what his future is going to hold. He’s 20 playing in the Appy League, so he’s a little old, but not terribly so, but still, he needs to put up a solid year, something like .280 plus average, .750 plus OPS, to give some indication that he’s going to be to hit long term. If he falls flat on his face this year he’ll be pitching next year, but if he’s decent enough he’ll certainly get a chance to play SS again next year.

And keep in mind that Santos played 7 years an infielder before converting to pitching. Lots of guys who make the move spend a decent amount of time playing in the field, typically because they can hold their own with the bat up to AA, and at AAA their defense makes up for their lack of hitting.

He hit well in college though in only a few ABs I really hope he can stick at SS because of his defense I just hope he can hit!

by Jay212033 on Jun 24, 2010 2:17 AM EDT up reply actions

If he stays at 1B this year then you have to believe that’s where he’s gonna be. If they think a guy can play 3B then he’s going to do it, because that’s just much more valuable. Man, with him and Jake Hanson moving off 3B that position is even weaker for the Braves. No wonder they want to move Cunningham there.

They have not played Cunningham at 3B yet he may play there later though. Terdoslavich is playing 3B in Danville and Leonard once he signs will be playing 3B as well and probably in Rome so we have a couple of 3B specs but I want more lol!

Forgot about Leonard. He’ll jump right to the top of the list with Cunningham when he signs.

Maybe they didn't like what they saw there in extended spring...

or maybe with Drury, Lipka, Reyes, and De Los Santos around, they are just trying to get everyone at bats. I guess we’ll see through the season if he takes some innings at the hot corner.

Is it going to be Crim, Vizzy, JT in that order, this weekend?

I don’t know, they don’t even have tomorrow’s starter up yet. I think it’s going to be Crim, but won’t know until I wake up and check. I’m going to be at the game Saturday too, so it would definitely be nice if it was Julio throwing.

    Mitch Jones

The guy is leading the organization in 2B and ranks second in the organization in HR and SLG.

Sure seems like he could help the big team like now.

by fandave on Jun 24, 2010 6:38 AM EDT reply actions

I don’t see why. It’s an incidental thing. He’s never been given a chance to play at the Majors (sure, 8 games last year but that’s not really a chance). There’s a very good likelihood that if he was given regular or semi-regular at bats in the Majors he’d play well. He’s 4-A in the sense that nobody has given him the chance, but he’s not the typical 4-A in the sense that he hasn’t proven he can’t perform in the Majors yet. He deserves a shot, and he definitely doesn’t deserve to be labeled a 4-A player offhand because no one has given him the opportunity to play yet.

We could maybe get some usefulness out of him. It’s surprising he was given so few chances given his huge power numbers but he was striking out in more than 30% of his at bats before the past couple of years. And let’s face it, he’s 32 now and past his prime. I think anything we get out of him would be gravy but who knows. Crazier things have happened.

by ajones2522 on Jun 24, 2010 12:11 PM EDT up reply actions

    yeah, you think may be.
Jeez, its not exactly like we have this huge over-abundance of RH power bats that routinely destroy all the LF starting pitching that get thrown at us.

    And for the DSL curious...

    rained out.

Also, Jordan Schafer was 1/5, and a caught stealing. But no strikeouts, so that’s nice.

by Mr. Sanchez on Jun 24, 2010 7:47 AM EDT reply actions

    Until his wrist regains strength...

all I’m hoping to see from JS is a reduction in strikeouts. The power will hopefully come as the wrist gets back into action, so imo, the no strikeouts part is really all I want to see right now.

Really looking forward to his progression up the ladder...

and if he can move on up to Rome by the end of the year. Our pitching depth is just insane, as they may not become as big as the current masterful trio, but Otero, Perez, Abraham Espinosa is looking like a helluva find in the DSL right now, among so many others like Weber that are working their way up from A and rookie ball. Our pitching depth throughout the entire system is just sick. We’ve got quality starters and relievers at seemingly every single level.

I saw MB and it’s so crazy even all the guys on the team are raving about it. They all know how special the pitching staff is and now that they’ve got some veteran hitters the guys are thinking they can make a run at the playoffs in the second half.

The G Braves are on quite often on CSS. I thought the OT idea was a good one. I’m watching them right now. JJ pitching and hitting well, he just got a nice one, helping his cause. The Braves are up 5-0 in the 2nd inning.
