Braves Quote For The Day... Fredi Got Fingered

Ken Rosenthal has about the best line of the day on the Marlins' firing of Fredi Gonzalez:

If there is any justice, the 2011 World Series will feature a showdown between Loria's two ex-managers - Gonzalez, who becomes a leading candidate to succeed Bobby Cox with the Braves, and Joe Girardi, who won last year's Series with the Yankees.

Maybe next year will be Fredi trying to make it two in a row for the Braves.

Would love to have him. What is it with that team getting rid of good managers? With that kind of ineptness, how do they keep winning games?

Not sure, but if I’m a young coach and I wanna be a manager of a great team one day, I’m handing my resume in to the Marlins today.

because managers aren't all that important

especially in comparison to roster construction. and the marlins sure as hell know how to draft

Are you telling me

You wouldn’t care if Dusty Baker or AJ Hinch was our manager over Cox? They’ve got decent ball clubs that have suffered from managerial failure.

there are very few managers whom I think have much of an impact on a team’s performance, but Baker is certainly one of them.

Agree. I believe it is much easier to have a negative impact than a positive one. That being said, a good, knowledgable manager can certainly tweak a team and make moves that help.

What do you want them to do?

Wait until the off-season and let Fredi walk away? My guess is that now that Loria understands that his team is too young to make the playoffs, he figured he’d cut bait with Gonzalez now so that he wouldn’t have to endure the embarrassment of his manager leaving for an intradivisional rival in the off-season.

This

Loria is a dimwitted rich scumbag who happens to own a yeam as one of his playthings. A type we have far too many of in Baseball.

by Sam Jethroe on Jun 23, 2010 4:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Absolutely. Fredi barely hung on to his job after last season.

I would NEVER coach for a Loria owned ballclub. I’d sit unemployed first. Guy has no idea what he’s doing. Ted never did either, but he knew to let his baseball people do their thing without too much interference.

I've said this before, but...

I really don’t want him here. I don’t have any confidence in his ability to either run a team (anybody who doesn’t think a manager is important in keeping the ship running smoothly has had the example of two decades of smooth sailing by the USS Bobby Cox go right past them) or to handle the game on the field.

by Sam Jethroe on Jun 23, 2010 4:58 PM EDT reply actions

Why

exactly do you not have confidence in him running a team? Why do you not have confidence in him handling a game on the field. (Not to be offensive at all, but I really am wondering.)

I hate the Phillies so much...

Observation of his tenure in Miami.

He’s better than Girardi (who nearly ruined their staff when he was there) but he’s not as good as his inflated rep with most writers would lead you to believe.

I have a question

What makes Gonzalez the front runner? From what little I’ve read about him he doesn’t seem to have made that big of an impact in the majors as a manager. It is obvious I don’t know, so if you guys would try to win me over, what would you say?

Any links to articles would be appreciated.

Thanks!

You're kidding, right?

He’s had the Marlins in contention ever since he’s been there, in spite of their pitiful payroll.

I was only kidding

Sorry, but payroll is not indicative of talent. Florida certainly has the lowest payroll in baseball but they have talent everywhere. I hear and understand why people would think Fredi is deserving because he’s got them to a .500 record as skipper, but I would hope the Braves know a bit more about him. There are a lot of good coaches out there and I think any of them could have done the same thing in Florida.

That single factor isn’t enough for me, and I hope it’s not enough for Wren.

Talent everywhere?

You do realize in the last four years he’s been forced to start:
Alfredo Amezaga
Byung-Hyun Kim (!!!)
Emilio Bonifacio
Sergio Mitre
Matt Treanor
Rick VandenHurk
Mark Hendrickson
Sean West
Mike Jacobs

That, my friend, is not “talent.”
