Braves at White Sox Series Preview: On The Road Again
After a 6-game home stand in Atlanta, the NL-best Braves travel to the South Side of the Windy City to face the surging Chicago White Sox. The Sox, led by outspoken manager Ozzie Guillen, are currently 34-34 and trail the Twins by 5.5 games in the AL Central. They come into the series winners of six straight, as they swept the lowly Pirates and Nationals. I'm guessing they'll receive a bit more of a challenge from the Braves, but hey, what do I know?
The White Sox are a below average club offensively. Alex Rios (.311, 13HRs, 35RBI) and Paul Konerko (.294, 17HRs, 48RBI) have been incredible for the Sox in 2010 and former-Brave Andruw Jones (.210, 10HRs, 22RBI) has performed decently when given an opportunity. They've certainly struggled as a whole, though. Carlos Quentin has been unimpressive (.215, 8HRs, 37 RBI) and they've gotten basically no production from Alexi Ramirez and Gordon Beckham. Catcher A.J. Pierzynski isn't much of a threat at the plate either and he's getting up there in age.
The Sox are 10th in runs scored in the AL, 12th in team batting average, 11th in team OBP and 10th in team slugging. Where they do excel is on the basepaths, where they've stolen 66 bases which is good for 2nd in the AL. Another thing the Sox do well is control the strike zone. They don't strike out very often (only 15.4% of the time) and know how to take a walk (8.7%). Despite the impressive coverage of the strike zone, I don't see Hanson, Hudson or Lowe having too much trouble with the White Sox hitters. Basically, if you don't let Konerko or Rios beat you, the Sox won't beat you.
The White Sox have a rotation anchored by veterans Mark Buehrle and Jake Peavy and it's rounded out nicely with Gavin Floyd, John Danks and Freddy Garcia. Closer Bobby Jenks has closed out 14 games for Chicago, but he's currently injured with a calf strain. It's still to be determinded if he'll be able to pitch in the 3-game series starting Tuesday. Besides Jenks, relievers Sergio Santos, JJ Putz and Matt Thorton have been very good. Tony Pena, Randy Williams and Scott Linebrink round out their bullpen and all three have been pretty mediocre this season.
More good stuff after the jump...
In the American League, the White Sox starters are 11th in ERA (4.62), but 5th in FIP (4.07). They're 10th in BABIP (.303), which is right around league average and 7th in WHIP (1.34) so they'll allow some baserunners. They do strike out quite a few and don't walk many (5th in K/BB ratio), so the Braves will need to continue their patience at the plate. All-in-all, pretty decent stuff from the White Sox and their starting pitchers.
Their bullpen is certainly better and they boast an impressive ERA of 3.94 (5th in the AL) and 3.49 FIP (1st in the AL). They're 8th in bullpen WHIP so they'll definitely give up some base runners. The Sox also have the highest BABIP in the AL (3.37), so they should be coming back down to earth sometime in the near future. Similar to the starting pitchers, the bullpen does a nice job striking out hitters while not walking many, as they're 3rd in K/BB ratio. The Braves have been fantastic in the later innings, but they'll probably need to do some early scoring if they want to win in Chicago.
Pitching Match-Ups:
Tuesday, June 22nd - 8:10EST: Tommy Hanson (7-3, 3.38 ERA, 3.26 FIP) vs. John Danks (6-5, 3.18 ERA, 3.41 FIP)
Tommy Hanson comes into Tuesday's game after dominating a potent Rays lineup in his last start. Hanson pitched 7 scoreless innings and only allowed 3 hits. Big Red had total command of all 4 of his pitches, as he struck out 6 while only walking 1.
John Danks, a lefty, also dominated in his last start, but did so against a weak Pirates lineup. He threw 8 innings of 2-run ball and only allowed 4 hits. Danks struck out 6 and walked 3.
Wednesday, June 23rd - 8:10 EST: Tim Hudson (7-2, 2.34 ERA, 4.29 FIP) vs. Mark Buehrle (5-6, 4.71ERA, 4.06 FIP)
Tim Hudson was his usual self in his last start: Nothing pretty or sexy about it, but he gets the job done. Huddy went 7 innings in his last start and despite allowing four hits and four walks, allowed only 1 run. Hudson did a great job of keeping the ball down in the zone and will need to continue this at hitter-friendly U.S. Cellular Field.
Mark Buehrle, also a lefty, went 7 and 1/3 innings in Pittsburgh during his last start and came away with the win. The Pirates were able to get 6 hits off the crafty veteran, but only scratched across 1 run. Buehrle had full command of his pitches as he struck out six while only walking one.
Thursday, June 24th - 2:05EST: Derek Lowe (9-5, 4.77 ERA, 4.32 FIP) vs. Gavin Floyd (2-7, 5.20 ERA, 3.67 FIP)
Derek Lowe was his normal, average self in his last start against the Royals. He went 6 and 1/3 innings and allowed three runs on six hits. Similar to other starts, Lowe didn't strike out many nor did he walk many. Just like Hudson, Lowe has to keep his sinker down in Chicago or they'll be sending moon shots over the outfield wall.
Gavin Floyd, a righty, pitched his heart out in his last start against Washington. He went pitch-for-pitch with Stephen Strasburg and threw 8 innings of 1-run ball. Floyd struck out five and only walked one, but it was against a weak Nationals lineup so take that as it is. He received a no-decision as the White Sox won in the 11th inning.
Questions of the Series:
1. How will the Braves hit against two left-handed pitchers? Fortunately, the Braves haven't seen too many lefties in the past few series, but that changes in Chicago.
2. How will Bobby use the DH? With the Braves facing two lefties, will he be able to use Eric Hinske as a DH or 1B? Will David Ross catch to try to slow the White Sox's base runners? Will Chipper get a few days off now that Omar Infante is healthy?
3. The White Sox beat up on the Pirates and Nationals and have won 6 in a row. How will they fare against one of the best teams in baseball?
4. Are the Braves at full health? Takashi Saito will be returning to the bullpen on Tuesday, Troy Glaus left Sunday's game with cramps and Yunel Escobar, Chipper Jones and Jason Heyward are all a bit nicked up. Will they be at full health?
5. Will the weather cooperate? They call it the Windy City, but it might as well be renamed the Rainy City. Thunderstorms are expected on Tuesday and Wednesday and there's a chance they'll linger around until Thursday as well. Go away rain.
Final Thoughts:
The White Sox are playing better as of late, but so does everyone when they play the Nationals and Pirates. The Braves have been the hottest team in baseball in the last month and I fully expect them to continue their strong play in Chicago. I'm worried about facing two lefties, but I think they'll win on Tuesday and Wednesday after strong performances from Hanson and Hudson. Derek Lowe has been horribly inconsistent this year and I worry about him keeping the ball down in that hitter's paradise. Combine that with Gavin Floyd pitching very well and I think the Braves will drop the final game of the series.

Let's Go Bravos!
I expect Braves to take two of three. I am also concerned with the lefties (Braves vs. LHP 11-11) so that is why I think we will win one of the two lefty match ups. The key game will be between Lowe and Floyd. It seems whoever can survive will win that battle (both players have ERAs over 4). It’s going to be a fun series to watch. Once again, Go Bravos!

It is really bad in spots,
though not terrible overall. In fact, their defensive stats are only slightly worse than ours. Konerko is a butcher at 1B, which can’t help, but Alexei Ramirez is fantastic at short. Their 3B combination (mostly Teahen) has been really bad, too.

Well
Our defense doesn’t seem fairly captured by UZR. I’ve been looking more at DRS-I agree more with those assessments, even though it’s a bit generous to Hinske and Chipper. Escobar has been flat out awesome this year, and for whatever reason, UZR doesn’t agree. DRS also seems to be more accurate with Melky and Prado.
UZR agrees with Yunel this season
UZR has Yunel as the 3rd best SS in baseball.
http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=ss&stats=fld&lg=all&qual=y&type=1&season=2010&month=0
I was using both UZR and DRS for those assessments.
I am becoming increasingly skeptical of UZR’s effectiveness in describing a player’s value, at least when taken in isolation. Now that DRS is available, I always look at both. And if there’s a discrepancy, I tend to prefer DRS.

Buehrle is 22-6, 3.37 ERA against the NL.
Chicago’s six-game streak is akin to the eight-game streak of the Mets because the Mets lost two of three to a good Yankees team after winning the previous seven games, so I think the same will happen here: at worst, the Braves take two of three.

A little off-topic, but........
Anybody have any ideas as to what happens when McLouth is ready to play…..? We’ve been doing pretty darn good without that hole in the line-up. I know the collision was a couple weeks ago….but time flies.

It would be awesome if he went down to AAA to get some sort of work on his batting approach. But realistically, he will come off the DL and resume starting role in CF because of his glove.

Agreed. It’s been so nice getting to the 8-hole and fully expecting Melky to be able to pull it off. Made nicer by the fact that he has pulled it off quite a few times since Nate’s injury. I like McClouth but hasn’t it been awesome nto having an auto-out in the 8th spot?
Exactly. That’s what I’m scared about. We go from being “fully loaded,” to having a big hole being back there. It could change our momentum.

Not to mention, has Melky’s fielding really been suspect? He has made some great grabs. Granted, Nate would probably get those standing up and not need to dive thanks to his speed, and he might have gotten some that were out of reach of Melky, but if Bobby uses him as a defensive replacement in later innings like he has Gregor, I’d be okay with that. Of course, I’m not that worried when Blanco goes up to the plate. Hopefully the magic touch(or tackle, whatever) of heyward fixed his head at the plate.
You’re right. Melky can cover more ground than it looks like he can. I would much rather him and Blanco playing center, than McLouth.
Nate hasn’t had his swing all season (maybe it’s still in Piittsburgh), and my guess is that he still won’t have it when he comes back.

"Will Chipper get a few days off now that Omar Infante is healthy? "
As someone who’s paying to attend tonight’s game, I certainly hope that isn’t the case. Chipper sat out the last Braves series I was able to attend (at Wrigley, two Junes ago); I’d rather not see that repeated.

Chipper will play if he’s able. He’s on a roll right now. But it’s good to know we have Omar back, just in case.

Well, sure ... from the standpoint of team-depth
But – from the standpoint of a spectator of live baseball – I don’t get excited when the Braves come to town because Omar Infante might be in the lineup.
That's your loss, then.
Omar is the shiz, too.

I know you are, to a very certain extent, joking:
But Omar Infante cannot hold a candle to Chipper Jones in “the shit” category.
Of course, since Danks is on the mound, we’re in an AL park, and Infante hits right-handed, we may see both Infante and Chipper in the lineup (with Chipper at DH and Infante/Prado at 3B). That’s one avenue to both more rest for Chipper and a more right-handed lineup.
Danks is actually better against righties
than lefties. IIRC, it’s due to his changeup. When the Rays stacked lefties against Danks in his 2nd start against them, they pummeled him, a marked change from his first start, when they started mostly righties, and he pummeled them.
by kswissreject on Jun 22, 2010 5:30 PM EDT up reply actions
Actually:
The same is true for Buerhle this season, though the splits are closer. Danks’ split is pretty large.
But we’re talking about Cox, and he loves to to play RH/LH straight-up. Sure enough, we have Chipper at DH, Infante in LF, and Conrad at 3B.
I'm sure...
another little “accident” can be arranged.

I think we are very capable of sweeping them. However, given the play of both teams in the last week, I think 2 of 3 is a more realistic approach. Also, I did not mean to say we will never sweep anyone the rest of the season. We probably will and also will probably lose some series as well. My reference was to over the course of the remander of the season

Unless there are more storms behind that one....

It should be drier than yesterday. The system that prduced heavy rain and severe thunderstorms Monday is pushing off to the east. A staionary front will keep the shower activity today mainly to the south of Chicago.
I picked the wrong day to quit sniffing Matt Cain.
Three good pitching matchups in this series. The way we’re playing, you’ve got to like our chances to take 2 of 3. I’m thinking the first 2 games will be low-scoring, but I like our chances in the third game. I’ve just got a good feeling that we will hit Floyd.

To quote a well-respected admiral, it's a trap........series.
Maybe I’m being a pessimist, but it would not surprise me in the slightest if the Braves only win one of these games. 2 lefties, Hudson overdue for a bad game, a (in my opinion) slightly underrated team, and so on just has bad juju written all over it

Danks’ OPS against:
2010
vsRHB: .563
vsLHB: .747

vsRHB: .719
vsLHB: .758
Buehrle’s OPS against:
2010
vsRHB: .756
vsLHB: .795

vsRHB: .736
vsLHB: .733
Doesn’t look like these are your usual scary lefties. They are both good pitchers but they don’t own lefties like some and Danks seems to even be worse against lefties.

Great point.
If we can split the first two, I think we’ll definitely get the series win. Danks has been pretty terrible this year.
What do you guys think Bobby will do with the DH? I’d like to see Troy get a day off or maybe DH one game. He looks like he has a foot injury of some kind. But with two lefties in the first two games, Bobby’s gotta play him over Hinske. Maybe Thursday’s game will be a day off.
I’m in favor of putting Ross @ Catcher and Gregor @ CF for the first two games.
Danks has not been terrible.
If anything, he is pitching just about as well as he ever has.

Prediction
Hanson will keep things relatively quite—having only an inning or so of trouble through 7, allowing few runs if any (no homers, believe me, there will be no homers from the Sox.) We’ll get on the board before the 4th, scoring around 4. Hanson will put runners on late for the bullpen, enough will score to make it tight or tied, we’ll come through offensively in the 8th or 9th and Wags will get his 400th save.
Isn’t that kind of the script for the season? Score early, allow very few runs, ensure victory with another offensive drive late. It’s actually getting quite predictable. We lose games where we deviate from that script.
I look for the Sox to take a game in this series, but that’s it. Probably the middle game. I can’t help but think Huddy’s walks will catch up with him at some point, and Buehrle can certainty pitch when he’s on.
Avalanche fan stuck in Penguin territory.
The consensus tends to be
that Hudson is over-performing and that his numbers are inflated, but I don’t have my usual skepticism on this one. I think Hudson will continue to allow fewer than 2 runs per start for the rest of the season.
I think rather than his numbers catching up with him, he’ll catch up with his numbers. He’s improving, not declining.
I think the Braves take the series. Sweep?
Braves have been surprising me all year. Until they actually lose a series, I’m going to expect victory. Go Braves!!
Braves Win! Braves Win!
I'm psyched that in this series we WILL see Wagner get his 400th save.
Beyond awesome.
I also hope Troy is hitting 4th, I think he’s earned that spot.
I’m fully confident we’re going to head back to the Ted with a winning series.
