Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 6/19
Gwinnett 0, Syracuse 2
Jair Jurrjens' second rehab start was much better than his first, mostly because he pitched nearly twice as much and cut his walks from 4 to 1. He did give up too many hits, but, at the end of the day the results of these appearances don't matter, all that matters is he's ready to go when he returns to Atlanta's rotation. After struggling for a few weeks, Cory Gearrin has pitched 4.1 scoreless over his last 2 appearances. Freddie Freeman hasn't been getting on base at his usual clip this season, but he's improved that immensely recently, with a .433 OBP in his last 9 games.
Mississippi 2, Carolina 1
The M-Braves scored 2 first inning runs after Antoan Richardson and Alejandro Machado led off the game with bunt singles and were driven in by a Mauro Gomez groundout and a Donell Linares sacrifice fly. That's all Mike Minor needed as he overcame a tight strike zone to dominate the Mudcats for 7 innings. He used a diving slider that came in between 78 and 82 and changed speeds on his fastball all the way from 89 to 93 to limit Carolina to just 2 hits, one a solo homer by shortstop Kris Negron on a hanging slider.
Myrtle Beach 1, Frederick 9
JJ Hoover had been on a roll, allowing just 4 earned runs in 39.2 innings over 6 starts from May 12th to June 8th, but in his last 2 starts he's allowed 10 earned in just 6 innings. On the bright side, Scott Proctor had another successful appearance and the word is that he's going to be joining Mississippi when the team returns home on Monday. Myke Jones extended his hit streak to 9 games.
Rome 11, Charleston 6
Brett DeVall allowed a ton of baserunners, but managed to pitch around it, rebounding well after a tough outing his last start. In his last 10 games, Kyle Rose is hitting .368 with a .858 OPS, with 3 stolen base and just one CS. Cory Harrilchak is going strong as well, with a .359 average and .866 OPS in his last 10, with 5 steals and 2 caught stealings. And the good news keeps coming, as Christian Bethancourt has a .351 average and .801 OPS in his last 10 games.
DSL Braves 1, DSL Angels 0
Centerfielder Hector Garcia celebrated his 18th birthday with a pair of hits and 18 year old Edward Salcedo celebrated his own awesomeness with a pair of hits. 19 year old Jean Carlos Gil dominated the Angels over 5 innings and was followed by 17 year old Jesus Saldeno, who continued his great season with a scoreless inning. He's striking out a batter an inning while allowing just a .125 average against and a 0.67 WHIP.

I was at the Mississippi game in Zebulon and I inadvertently stole this guy’s seat in the first row next to the Braves’ dugout. He was cool about it, just sitting in the seat next to it, telling me it was Ok since I was a Braves fan. He asked if I read Talking Chop, and I said, “Yeah, I’m cbwilk.” He then said some very flattering things.
The guy’s name is Kevin and he’s a really good guy. I had a nice time watching the game with him and his girlfriend (whose name I never got). And speaking of his girlfriend, I’m insanely jealous. She’s very, very attractive and, more importantly, incredibly friendly. It seems like they go to a ton of games together and just generally have a blast. So yeah, I had a great time hanging out with them, but I’m just brimming with jealousy and minor hatred for their good fortune.

awesome. i really do wish i lived closer to the Braves minor league teams. Ever since the Sidewinders left Tucson, I basically have no baseball besides independent leagues.

C.B., it was really nice to get to meet you last night. Had a great time at the game. Thanks so much for the nice things you had to say about my girlfriend (Whitney). I let her read your post this morning, and she’s so fired up about getting a Talking Chop shout out that I think my early morning wake ups to read the minor league recap thread will be complaint free for the rest of the season.
So, if my calculations are correct
that’s 23 straight innings Gwinnett has been shutout, right?

So I’m thinking that Minor and Diamond should head to Gwinnett, and the Teheran-Delgado duo should replace them in Mississippi. Masters should head to the Beach too.
Who are you moving out of the Gwinnett rotation in this scenario? And after they move out, where do they go?

JJ and Saito will be rejoining the Braves shortly, sending 2 more pitchers to AAA, presumably. If the org wants to move some pitchers up, they will have to make room for them through trades I guess. I’m happy with Teheran, DelGado and Vizcaino staying put for awhile. Minor might be ready for a promotion, I’m not smart enough to know when he’s ready.. If so, they’ll make room. But if the team/org wants to start wholesale promotions of the Minor League pitchers, they need to trade a few away to make room, and trading pitchers away is one hell of a roll of the dice. None of the top pitchers, Teheran, DelGado, Vizcaino, Minor, etc etc etc will be needed in Atl until 2012-2013 (barring injuries), it’s a good thing for them to face teams/hitters multiple times to work on adjustments and being adjusted to. Patience is a good thing with these guys.
Heyward is pretty good
Minor has had a rough go of it lately, this start aside. I’d definitely like for him to spend a bit more time at Mississippi. He’s walking more guys than we hoped he would, even though he’s striking out way more guys than we hoped. I’d just like to see him get that settled, and hopefully figure out what’s been happening in the games where he’s gotten shelled, before we move him up.
Yeah, if anything Delgado and Teheran are the guys that need to get bumped up soon, because A-ball hitters aren’t presenting them with too many challenges. Teheran has a better K/BB at Myrtle than he did at Rome.

It’s interesting, because when I saw Minor yesterday I basically saw a 2 pitch pitcher. His slider, which may even be considered a curve by some, was good, but he did hang it occasionally. And I like that he could change speeds on the fastball and move it in and out, he had all the up and down and in and out movement you’d love for a guy to have, but it really wasn’t a plus plus pitch. I’m even more curious to see how he develops now that I’ve seen him throw in a game.

Rose
Does anyone know if he switch hitting yet or if he just completely abandoned that idea
Todd Cunningham
I happened to note that he was assigned to the Rome Braves 3 or 4 days ago and is listed on their active roster, but hasn’t made an appearance. Seems odd. Wouldn’t they want to quickly put him into the lineup?
He’s taking a few days to get acclimated to the pro lifestyle before starting. It’s fairly common.

I posted a link about why he's not playing right now
I blogging from my phone and I can post it again later if you like but the meat of the article states that MLB has not approved his contract yet.
