Around SBN: The Ten Worst Swings Of The 2011 Season

Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 6/18

Brandon Beachy allowed just 1 run over 5 innings in his first start of the season and added a home run at the plate, also his first of the season.

Gwinnett 0, Syracuse 5, Game 1

  • F. Freeman 1-1, .261 AVG
  • T. Redmond 5.1 IP, 5 R, 3 ER, 6 H, 2 BB, 2 K, 4.18 ERA
  • J. Lyman 0.2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 K, 4.86 ERA
  • This was a makeup game from one that got snowed out up in Syracuse back in May, so it was technically a home game for the Sky Cheifs. They may want to acquire Craig Stammen, cause he nearly no-hit the G-Braves. Josh Anderson broke up the no-no bid in the top of the 7th, the Braves last chance at bat since Minor League double headers consist of a pair of 7 inning games, and Freddie Freema added a pinch hit single a few batters later, but ultimately it wasn't enough. After 3 straight great starts, Todd Redmond has had a pair of so-so games.

    Gwinnett 0, Syracuse 1, Game 2

  • F. Freeman 1-2, BB, .263 AVG
  • JC Boscan 2-3, 2B, .198 AVG
  • J. Ortegano 6 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 3 BB, 4 K, 5.11 ERA
  • The G-Braves couldn't muster any offense, causing them to drop both games of the home/away doubleheader. Freddie Freeman managed to go 2-3 on the night with a walk. Jose Ortegano took the tough luck loss, allowing just 1 unearned run, aided by a Joe Thurston error. Ortegano is still walking too many, but this was definitely his best AAA start.

    Mississippi 3, Carolina 4

  • A. Machado 2-3, 2B, BB, .286 AVG
  • M. Gomez 3-4, 2B, RBI, .256 AVG
  • J. Gonzalez 2-4, .210 AVG
  • J. Sucre 2-4, 2B, .538 AVG
  • B. Beachy 5 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 1 BB, 7 K, 1.48 ERA, 1-2, HR (1), RBI, BB, .200 AVG
  • Brandon Beachy has pitched so well that the Braves decided he needed some more innings. After tonight, his first start, he may get a lot more innings. He used a 94 mph fastball and mixed in a solid curve and changeup to dominate the Mudcats over 5 innings, striking out 7 and allowing just one run. He also managed to hit a home run at the plate, ironically enough in the top of the 6th, just before he was removed from the game. Jesus Sucre picked a great time to go bonkers at the plate, with 7 hits in his first 3 games at AA.

    Myrtle Beach 6, Frederick 8

  • LV Ware 1-3, 3B, RBI, OF Assist, .257 AVG
  • My. Jones 1-3, 2B, RBI, SB (3), E (3), .432 AVG
  • D. Nelson 3-3, 2B, RBI, BB, .269 AVG
  • C. Miles 2-3, .250 AVG
  • A. Vizcaino 4.2 IP, 4 R, 2 ER, 5 H, 2 BB, 4 K, 6.23 ERA
  • The Pelicans allowed 5 unearned runs tonight, getting errors from Travis and Myke Jones as well as Samuel Sime. This didn't help Arodys Vizcaino in his second start with the team. He hasn't found the Carolina League as easy as the Sally League so far, with his WHIP inflating to 1.85 as he's allowing opposing batters to hit .342 against him. He's walked 3 in 8.2 innings after only walking 9 in 69.1 innings with Rome. Myke Jones keeps his hit streak going, extending it to 8 games.

    Rome 4, Charleston 1

  • C. Harrilchak 4-4, RBI, SB (17), .307 AVG
  • C. Bethancourt 2-4, 2 RBI, .250 AVG
  • B. Schlehuber 2-4, .200 AVG
  • R. Lopez 6.2 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 3 BB, 4 K, W (3), 2.88 ERA
  • It's great to see that Christian Bethancourt has made some adjustments and rebounded from his struggles. He's hitting .306 in his last 10 games. It might be time to move Cory Harrilchak back up to Myrtle Beach, since it seems like there's little left for him to prove in the SAL. Robinson Lopez continues to impress, shutting out the River Dogs over 6.2 innings to pick up his 3rd win. In his 7 starts, covering 38.2 innings, he has a 3.03 ERA and a 1.14 ERA.

DSL Braves 7, DSL Blue Jays 3

  • G. Reyes 4-5, 2B, 2 RBI, .240 AVG
  • R. Luna 2-5, .417 AVG
  • E. Salcedo 0-2, BB, .275 AVG
  • E. Herrera 2-3, RBI, .500 AVG
  • E. Castillo 6 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 0 BB, 5 K, 1.13 ERA
  • I. Geronimo 2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 3 K, 0.00 ERA
  • 19 year old second baseman Gerardo Reyes collected 4 hits and a pair of RBI while 18 year old catcher Elisaul Herrera rapped out a pair of his own hits. 19 year old righthander Eduardo Castillo dominated the Dominican Jays, shutting them out for 6 innings. He's been great in 3 starts, covering 16 innings, with a 1.13 ERA and a 0.75 WHIP. 19 year old righty Ignacio Geronimo, who finished off the game with a pair of shutout innings, has been better though; he hasn't allowed a run in 11 innings covering 6 appearances and has just a .135 average against and a 0.55 WHIP.

Nice to see big Frankenstine and Bethancourt hitting

I love the pitching, but we gotta hit the ball

What’s the report on Beachy so far this year? His numbers are stellar. I’d heard he was 93-96 with a developing CB last year…

I didn’t see the FB get up that high last night, might have worked more in the 92-94 range, but the curve looked great. He’s really turned a corner and might be working himself into the team’s plans. I was very impressed last night.

Thanks to cbwilk for nice ongoing reports on minors action. I have a nitpick about last nite’s M-Braves game wrap, tho — the score was 4-5, but a loss is a loss. Beachy looked impressive in his 5 innings, & the scoreboard radar gun showed many 93s on his fastball, maybe a 94 here & there. His HR was a total surprise. It also tied the score at that point.

Thanks. That’s what I get for trying to write the report off of memory.

Still, nice velocity. I think as far as relief prospects go, he’s right there. Probably still a year away though, because we’ve got Gearrin, Marek, Dunn, Redmond, and others at AAA.
