Jesse Chavez Sent Down... Yayyy!!!!
The weak link of the Atlanta bullpen was sent packing up I-85 to Gwinnett today to make room for Chris Resop and his new found success. Let's hope Resop makes Chavez unnecessary.

The weak link is still here.
His name is Christhian Martinez. He’s been the weak link from the moment he was called up. Why does no one care about him any more?
Pardon if I don’t rejoice.

Exactly
Martinez and Chavez are the low leverage middle relief pitchers. Chavez was mostly pitching poorly when he got the opportunities, but he wasn’t losing a ton of games for us. I’m not sure what all the excitement is about.
by KoKo the Monkey (T-Bone) on Jun 15, 2010 4:37 PM EDT up reply actions
because martinez has a decent 3.86 ERA. He has allowed 3 hits in 4 appearances. Chavez had 18 appearances…and gave up 19 earned runs.
More importantly, a stat I’ve already mentioned. He’s had 4 appearances. Bobby knows he sucks, so he doesn’t use him. That’s just fine by me.
To continue your analogy, the weakest link in the chain is fine if you don’t try an put a heavy load on that part of the chain.
You're really citing
an ERA from 4 appearances? Are you insane? Even Chavez’s numbers come in such a small sample size that there is no way to read that much into them (except that he’s been exceptionally unlucky).
If Bobby has no confidence in Martinez, that is an argument FOR sending him down, not an argument for keeping him. He’s a waste of roster space that could be better spent on just about anyone—including Chavez, who at least is young enough to possibly be a part of the team’s future if he can get it together.

Here’s the difference- Chavez has basically fucked up every game he’s been in. Martinez, only one or two

But does sending him down not help him "get it together"?
I just hope this means we’ll be using Kimbrel at least twice a week.
There’s also his .64 WHIP. And Chavez is barely a year younger.

I think CM is a bit more valuable than Chavez at this point. At least he’s pitched better. He can be used infrequently to the point of abuse because of lack of use, and no one really cares. Chavez may be more important long term so it’s important that he go down and figure out his problems.
He's pitched so little that we can't say he's pitched "better". That's just silly.
And what we need is a guy who Bobby can use at least semi-frequently, so that he doesn’t abuse the better relievers by pitching them in 5-run games. Given that Bobby has shown more confidence in Chavez in that role (he’s finished 12 or 13 games, I believe), Chavez is the obvious choice for that reason. Having a guy who almost never pitches hurts the whole team, not just that pitcher. I’d rather have a bad pitcher who pitches a fair amount (only in blowouts) than a bad pitcher who doesn’t pitch.

Are you just anti-Martinez?
Cause it’s obvious that Chavez needs to work on some things. In the couple of appearances that Martinez has had he’s looked decent so it’s like riding the hot hand Martinez is looking better at this point than Chavez.
I get your point..even if no one else does lol..

SHouldn't this guy be Resop now (or Kimbrel, if not both)...
And what we need is a guy who Bobby can use at least semi-frequently, so that he doesn’t abuse the better relievers by pitching them in 5-run games
"a guy who Bobby can use at least semi-frequently, so that he doesn't abuse...."
Where is Dunn, or Marek, or Proctor, etc, etc, etc.?
Saito should be back this weekend, somebody else will go back to Gwinett. Jurrjens will be back in less than a month, 2 weeks even is possible, there goes another. I have no problem with Martinez getting a cup of coffee. We can find out how he pitches, and maybe increase his trade value if we don’t feel like he improves the pen. Just using “Johnny eyeball” on him, I’ve liked watching him pitch.
Heyward is pretty good
In the minors, where they probably need to stay.
Proctor hasn’t even shown he can get A-ball hitters out, and Dunn and Marek matter enough long-term to get them regular work.

according to fangraphs’ numbers (say whatever you will about them), chavez has been worth -0.1 wins above replacement this year, while martinez has been worth 0.0 WAR. A guy that is worth less than a replacement player is worse than a guy that is worth the same as a replacement player. Sure, chavez could be a future part of this bullpen, but it’s obvious that he doesn’t currently fit that role. I agree that he needs to work on things. And his performance so far has shown that repeatedly. A team fighting for the division can’t afford to let a guy work on things when there are better options. That’s what the minors are for.
I also agree that maritnez is a waste of roster space if bobby won’t use him. Same goes for kimbrel. Frankly, I think kimbrel deserves to get sent down more. And that’s not a negative thing. He just deserves to play some games. If he’s not getting time in the majors, then I’d rather have him working on things in the minors.
That's a ridiculous stat to cite.
I’m fine with CM, but that could mean that Martinez is at -0.4 and Chavez is at -0.6 in six times the innings.

His splits scare me, though: 10HR at home/ only 2 on the road.
Average: .331 vs. .221. 9/4 doubles, 24/8 runs scored.
OPS: 1.053 vs. .601.
Dang – I get how people think that park is a hitter’s paradise, but those numbers read like Coors Field splits…. before the humidore.

You do realize that Rios makes far more than Young
Not that I want Young though.
Yeah, I saw that.
I’m not convinced that’s true. As posted earlier, the Braves are getting by just fine on “unreliable” players hitting-wise. Plus, there’s really not much out there in terms of known tradeable OFers, unless some team surprises us. I’d really want to know what “pitching depth” Rosenthal is referring to.

Unless Wren was offered something ridiculously good, the big 3 of Teheran, Vizcaino and Delgado should be untouchable much like Hanson and Heyward once were (and stll are but not minor leagues anymore).

If Wren were to look outside the NL East
I think Colorado would be his best trade partner. They have an abundance of solid outfielders that include Smith, Spilbourghs (sp?) Gonzo and Fowler (not really interested in Hawpe).

Rios is at least productive...
McLouth, and 2-3 mid level prospects (i.e. not Teheran, Vizcaino, Delgado, Salcedo, Minor, Freeman, Bethancourt and Kimbrel) for him would be a trade I’d love to see.
Well, if Chipper is truly leaving...
… then you’ve got some interesting wallet space available.

and he doesn’t overpay with a long term deal on a guy entering his mid to late 30s coming from an ideal situation for them statistically.

Well, it ain't gonna be one sentence...
This from Capitol Avenue Club:
“[The Braves] obviously want to trade him, and wisely. His results at AAA have been impressive, but not overly impressive (K/9 < 9, K/BB = 3). Furthermore, I’m still completely unconvinced his stuff/approach will work in MLB. He’s always thrown a straight fastball and his breaking stuff has been flat this year. The only thing he has going for him is his velocity (mid-90’s) and plus change up. The Braves have a pitcher on their roster that throws a mid-90’s, straight fastball and a plus change up with not much else, his name is Jesse Chavez.”

I'm more excited about Kimbrel Staying. I mean... the 6th man in the bullpen doesn't mean too much
But…. With Kimbrel as our 5th most used guy! Hell Yeah! I don’t think Resop can be worse than Chavez. I’m still excited about Chavez as a prospect. He could easily get a real good curveball that he has been working on.
ehh..
I played with Jesse in high school, so this sucks balls. I don’t think he is any worse than Christhan Martinez (who doesn’t figure into the teams plans past this year or even this month). Hopefully Chavez gets some work in AAA and does well.
With that said, I’m eager to see the “new-” Resop.
