The Glut Of Braves Starting Pitching

What would happen if the Braves lost two starting pitchers tomorrow? Answer, they would be fine. Yes, it's mostly about which two they lose, but the point is they wouldn't have to scramble to call up some untested rookie who wasn't ready or some four-A player who will never be ready.

In case anyone hasn't noticed, the Braves staff as it's currently constructed is missing its two best pitchers from last season -- Javier Vazquez was traded away and Jair Jurrjens has spent the last month on the disabled list -- and the Braves have been in first place for two weeks thanks in large part to their starting pitching! Tim Hudson's re-emergence and new found dominance has allowed the Braves to replace the production of Vazquez, and the wily little flat-billed Kris Medlen is filling in brilliantly for Jurrjens. So good, in fact, that one could argue he should stay in the rotation even when Jurrjens returns.

The aforementioned Jurrjens will make his first rehab start tonight for the Gwinnett Braves of Buford. With no Atlanta Braves game, all eyes will be on him to see if the nagging injuries that have plagued him since the beginning of spring training are gone.

There will be another player in the G-Braves dugout who also has a chance to help the Braves rotation (if need be). The decision on Chris Resop is due tomorrow, and most rumors indicate that the Braves likely won't be able to trade him (they want something "substantial" in return) and will be forced to promote him to the majors. While his new found success has come in the rotation, Resop may be asked to move back to the bullpen and replace the ineffective Jesse Chavez (at least that's what we hope will happen).

Having this much available starting pitching is a good thing. In any given season players, and especially pitchers, are bound to get hurt, and if a team can replace that starter with someone almost as good, then their team won't lose a beat. If the Braves are to stay in first place, they have to be prepared for the inevitable and unfortunate injury. It certainly seems as though the Braves are well prepared to cover for at least two injured starting pitchers. Let's hope it doesn't some to that, but if it does, it's good to be prepared.

My guess is someone is going to be traded. If Chipper doesn’t get healthy we’ll likely need another bat. It would make sense to get another dependable bat in the outfield. Heyward is playing with pain, but we really can’t afford to rest him.

Nice to see that the decisions we have to make about our pitching staff are the “good” kind. Again, we may be in the driver’s seat as the trade deadline approaches in just 6 weeks.

I’ve been searching for some potential suitors for the surplus of Braves pitching and have only come up with a couple of boomerang-free possibilities.

1) KC seems to have soured on Alex Gordon for no reason I can fathom. I think it’s the can’t-do atmosphere in KC, as he seems to rake like mad in AAA. Maybe we can get him for a song?

2) Chris Young in Arizona. He’s 26, has power and is right-handed. He’s more suited for a corner slot (where he’d be a plus defender). And AZ would be well served by some actual live pitchers (Qualis got the seal of disapproval today).

by eglenn on Jun 14, 2010 3:48 PM EDT reply actions

Young has a decent contract, topping out at $8M in ’13 if I remember correctly.

by bighop on Jun 14, 2010 3:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Really reasonable.

Even the 2013 and beyond is affordable. KK comes off the books after next year (which would pay Young’s salary by itself) and Lowe after 2012.

by DawgB on Jun 14, 2010 4:02 PM EDT up reply actions

he’s the same player as McLouth…or at least he presents the same problems…his contact rate isnt good he doesnt walk enough and his power seems to come and go…the contract isnt bad if he keeps producing at his current level, but he’s been wildly inconsistent and i don’t trust him for the next 3-4 years….especially if there is a buyout on that option in 2014.

Heyward,Hanson, and Shaffer r ready now!! Why do you think they havent signed the "right handed bat"?

There is a buyout... $1.5 M

I don’t trust Young to be worth that salary, either. Maybe if he were arb-eligible, I’d want him (because it’d be easy to just non-tender him if he really sucked), but he’s been so erratic in his career I don’t see why we’d do this. It’d be just like the McLouth deal, part deux.

Too much pitching is a good thing. Somebody somewhere will approach Wren with a deal he can’t refuse. Should be an interesting trade season for the Braves. And if nothing happens, we go into the off season with a surplus of pitching, not a bad thing.

I bet the trade will not be sexy. It will be either xtra bullpen arm or young prospect with a solid bat but will not be ready for a few years.

this team can smell the postseason. I’d seriously doubt that they trade present starting pitching for a bat that isn’t ready. It seems like the braves definitely have the cards to deal, but they’ll definitely look more for a major league hitter.

My 2 cents

JJ will return to the rotation. He will struggle in a few starts to get back to normal. Medlen will go back to being situational MR. Martinez will go down and Resop will get the call. Nothing special will happen via trade.

by romone_braves91 on Jun 14, 2010 4:21 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

i could see a possible trade

we have 6 solid or plus starters
KK
Lowe
JJ
Medlen
Hanson
Hudson
Now maybe Resop

we may almost need to make a trade here to get a speedy player or something along those lines

But then again the only players we may realistically trade are Medlen(i’d hope not), JJ(i’d really hope not), and Resop(i’d like to but we can’t get anyone)

So i agree we wont be able to make a trade

Here's a question, though...

I know nobody wants to move JJ, but given his contract status, not to mention his agent (Boras), would this coming offseason be the time to trade him?? I can’t imagine Atlanta being able to sign him long term, though I hope I’m wrong about that. I just think his value will be very high this offseason, as long as he pitches the way he should the 2nd half of this year.

Medlen’s not going anywhere, either.

Problems...

KK isn’t cheap, and his record hurts in some eyes (in the least any GM making the moves has to deal with fans calling them an idiot). Considering what we’d likely get in return, he’s probably not worth dealing.

Lowe is essentially see above but worse; expensive, and not a chance we get a taker.

JJ is coming off an injury, and while he probably gets the best return other than Hanson or Medlen, it’s not likely we get a fair return for him considering he’s still has to get through rehab. You get at most a month’s worth of starts to show he’s healthy and pitching like the last two years, and if he is anyway, you want that on your playoff contending team. Maybe in the off season but not in the next month or so.

Medlen would likely get the best return in any deal, but he’s cheap for a while and has shown much potential as a starter and reliever. He’s too valuable to deal, especially considering if Wagner retires as he says he probably would be the best choice for closer next year considering the top to bottom depth we have in starters.

Hanson isn’t getting dealt.

Hudson isn’t getting dealt.

Resop has to prove he’s more than just AAA apparently, so we’ll see if he can get a market over the next month.

Thinking of it that way, I don’t think we trade a starter unless it’s Resop and he isn’t technically a starter for us considering the first 6 (and other options like Venters and Minor).

Welp...

JJ should be back by the beginning of July at the latest, barring a setback. I would argue to keep Medlen in the rotation, and dangle some combination of Diaz, McClouth, KK and/or Resop in a package deal to acquire a bat. Alex Gordon, as eglenn mentioned above, is an interesting idea, especially given his new versatility as a 3B/OF.

We’re definitely going to need a bat, and soon. Given our depth of arms, it should be an interesting trade deadline for our beloved Braves.

We should beat Grienke, as long as KK isn’t pitching that day. Grienke is the only pitcher in the majors whose luck is nearly as bad as KK’s. If the two of them go head-to-head, I don’t know what will happen. The game would probably end in a tie.

My point was that KC won’t be scoring because Grienke is pitching. And we should at least score off KC’s bullpen, as long as our offense shows up (ie: KK isn’t pitching for us that day).

Which of these is more stupid.

Making a mistake and pretending it didn’t happen? Or realizing you made a mistake and truly trying to correct it? Did the Ranger’s get the best of the trade? Hell yeah they did! Does that mean that we don’t make anymore trades with them? Hell no! If teams held grudges like the ones I’ve read from people on this site, then many of the teams would not do any business with us anymore. ‘Cause Schurholz (spelling fail?) flat out smacked their asses in the ’90’s.

The Rangers are trying to stay ahead of the Angels and could use some pitching. We have the surplus of starting pitching and can use this to upgrade at short (fixing the f ‘up), move salary that has been immovable, get at least something for Resop and prospects. We get some badly needed speed and a shortstop that appears to have his head screwed on straight. Because I’ll tell you, Esco’s head is not in the game! He does not hustle, constantly makes mental errors and I think his attitude isn’t that great either.

What manager John Russell thought when Morton hit J-Hey with a pitch, "Would you mind not shooting at the thermonuclear weapons!"

Well if Esco is so bad & Elvis is the bees knees why the hell would Texas do that trade?

For Resop? No I saw forget it, it can’t be corrected. Neftali is the only guy I miss out of that group. But we have young pitching for days, so it’s more bearable now.

by FitzFan on Jun 14, 2010 5:12 PM EDT up reply actions

it’s more stupid to make another error to try to atone for the first one. yunel is a very good defensive shortstop with a much better offensive output than andrus. By most defensive metrics, they’ve been about the same defensively and yunel OPSes about 80 points higher despite not playing in the bandbox in texas. That would be a downgrade at shortstop, no matter what people think of yunel’s attitude. With all of his “loafing”, he’s still better than andrus. As for feliz, he’s a bullpen arm, and therefore nowhere near as valuable as a good starter like kawakami. Throwing resop onto that deal makes it way unbalanced.

by telemakhos on Jun 14, 2010 6:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Andrus is not a better shortstop than Escobar

In the last two years (same amount of playing time) Escobar has put up 5.2 WAR to Andrus’ 4.6 WAR. That’s fangraph’s WAR that uses UZR for fielding which gives Andrus an extra win over Escobar. Both Total Zone and Dewan +/- have his defense ahead of Andrus (22 to 4 and 29 to 21 respectivly).

We get some badly needed speed and a shortstop that appears to have his head screwed on straight. Because I’ll tell you, Esco’s head is not in the game! He does not hustle, constantly makes mental errors and I think his attitude isn’t that great either.

This is bullshit.

You don’t know Yunel Escobar, you have no idea if he has a bad attitude/head on straight/head in the game/how hard he tries/ etc. I don’t know either. And no, you can’t tell any of these things just by watching him play.

July 31st is coming...

Let’s look at our starters and see who might be a trade candidate.

Hudson: No way he goes anywhere. Chances of a trade: Between slim and none, and slim just left town.

Hanson: See above. If someone really, really wanted him and offered Wren the world for him, maybe, but I think it would take a real haul to get Tommy. Like a young cheap stud outfielder and at least 2 top prospects.
Chances of a trade: Like a Cubs World Championship, it could happen, but don’t hold your breath.

Lowe: He’s pitched better his last few starts, but his contract is still an issue. If teams aren’t interested in taking Oswalt and his contract, who would really ask us for Lowe?
Chances of a trade: More likely to see Raul Mondesi back in a Braves uni.

KK: Most baseball executives(guys not named Minaya or Phillips anyway) look at things other than won-loss record when evaluating a player. Still, I don’t see a huge market out there for KK. His contract would be an issue for most teams, and moving him after only a year and a half may hurt us with other Japanese free agents down the road. Chances of a trade: More likely to see a Ryan Klesko comeback

JJ: Ah, now it gets interesting. Let’s say the hammy is healed, and JJ pitches well for us in July. Would Wren move him? His value has probably been dinged this year due to the injury, but he should still command a pretty good return. JJ’s salary will start to climb after this season, and he has Boras as an agent now, so is this the time to trade him? Chances of a trade: More likely to see FYF walk 4 times in a game, but hey, it could still happen.

Medlen: Crabs Medallion is a real wild card. He’d be attractive to a lot of teams, but I don’t think the Braves would want to move him unless they were getting a very nice return. He’d be easier to get than Hanson, but he can start or work out of the ‘pen and do both very well, and we all know how much Bobby likes versatility in his players.
Chances of a trade: I just don’t see it happening. More likely to see Mr. Krabs make a donation to his favorite charity.

Resop: Not only can he pitch, but on his off days he could play left field for us. If he comes up and gets some work, he might turn out to be pretty attractive to a few teams, but I just don’t know how much we would get for him.
Chances of a trade: Pretty good, the percentages would probably be higher than Prado’s batting average.

going to a 6 man rotation just to showcase a guy for trade is just a bad baseball move. Even if they go to a 6 man rotation, resop isn’t one of the 6 best starters. If they let him show that his stuff and newfound pitchability play against major leaguers in the pen, that should be enough to demonstrate his value.

I’m thinking of doing a post about the Braves’ options for when JJ comes off the DL. Not sure when I’ll have the time to do it, but there’s a lot that needs to be said about the situation that hasn’t really been said (at least not all in one post). As you allude to, it’s a good problem to have, but there are so many potential moving parts, especially if you throw Chris Resop into the mix. Plus, I want to put a poll on there to gauge people’s feelings on the matter. Based on what I’ve seen, it’s been about 50/50 as to whether KK or Medlen should go to the pen, with a few weirdos like me advocating for moving Lowe instead.

Moving Lowe would diminish his trade value even more

At least this off season he’s only a two year contract. Keep his value up and try to move him this off season. I don’t see us moving any of our pitchers this deadline unless it’s JJ.

100% DISAGREE

As as, ahem, “ace starter” absolutely no one wants Lowe at his current contract. We tried to give him away and other clubs still came back with “No thanks”. This isn’t the NBA where an expiring contract actually has value. Even 1 year of Lowe wouldn’t get opposing teams excited.

BUT… maybe we could pull a “Back to the Future” with Lowe. People here forget that he was once an ace closer who made the All Star game. Yeah, it was about 10 years ago, but he was nasty in that role. He should at least be familiar with the bullpen. Obviously, I not proposing that Lowe replaces Wagner, but with Lowe in the pen, then Bobby could have his Grybowski, a guy who he can call on to try to induce GiDPs.

No, it won’t be worth $15 mil/year for Lowe to be a middle reliever, but the fact is that he’s been beat out for a starting slot. Now, we just need to move him to a role where he’d be of more use to us.

actually

we werent really giving Lowe away. It was reported that the most we would eat of the 45mil that was on his contract was about 9 – 10 mil or 3 mil a year which IMO was very cheap. we should have at least offered to eat 5 mil a year on his contract if we really wanted to move him that bad. There are plenty of other starters out there who could have been had for 12mil and have higher upside than Lowe

You don't trade JJ...

not now. In the last 3 years, when has his value been lowest. And how much higher would it be if he just returned to his last 2 years form over the last few months of the year and was 100% healthy? Why on earth would you trade him now, and that is assuming both he doesn’t have a set back and pitches well enough immediately upon return to generate interest.

yep

if we’re gonna trade JJ, it shouldn’t be for a while.

to be honest, we probably should’ve dealt him last offseason, but we all know that wasn’t happeing.
