10 Again
After this 6-5 road trip. Even with a lot of our players banged up, we have been coming through. We might just have the best bench in the league right now. Pitching…What else is there to say. Glaus staying hot, Escobar coming around. Heyward taking a slight dip, but still overall, quite productive for a 20 year old rookie.
Just so you know...
I’m the one who voted 1, but only because there’s no zero.

Curious
Just how did you arrive at your rating? (Being that in another post, you noted that the Braves are 3rd in RBI.0

It was probably a troll.

Voted 9 for the first time ever
We just took 2 out of 3 from a very, very good Twins team.
If the Braves can take 2 out of 3 vs. the Rays I will be a solid 10 for the next poll.
60% of the time, it works every time
Can't wait
to see what happens in the next couple of weeks with Resop (today?), Saito and Jurrjens joining the ML team. Voted 8 again, if we could get a CFer……
Heyward is pretty good
I'm Ok with Melky
I’m ok with Melky in CF right now. He’s been producing. If only Nate could have started to come around like him. CF is our only real problem I think, besides Chipper. I think the only way we can get a real starting CF would be to trade a pitcher and the ones that would have to go would be Jurrjens of Meds because of their cheap contracts. Nobody is gonna take KK with his contract and bad luck…that being said I think we should stand put for now. If we could convince Bobby to move KK to the pen when JJ comes back…

Agreed
Melky may not be the best fielder, but he seems to be average and his hitting is coming around. So for now, I don’t see the need to move anyone. We can stand pat and see what offers come our way closer to the trade deadline.
Melky does ok in CF, Hinske does ok in LF, Infante has been helpful all over the place, Conrad has been super replacing Chipper vs the Brewers and Twins, Medlen has been great replacing Jurrjens…..Almost getting to the point we are winning with smoke and mirrors. It’s a wierd team, we to get rid of players more than we need to replace them.
Heyward is pretty good
I would also add Ross
he has been great when replacing Mac in the line-up.
Chipper: "It has never been about money for me, and it never will be about money. It has always been about winning, comfort and playing for Bobby Cox."
8
I’m still worried about all the nagging injuries to the hitters and the shakiness of much of the middle relief, but I have to bump my grade up from 7 to 8 to reward the team for a 6-5 road trip and winning 2/3 from the Twins.
I voted 11

You would :)
Chipper: "It has never been about money for me, and it never will be about money. It has always been about winning, comfort and playing for Bobby Cox."
back to a 7
Riding high after that 9 game winning streak I talked myself into an 8. While I’m happy with the results of the road trip, I still feel at the major league level our offense has a tendency to dissapear at times. Heyward has been piling up the K’s, Chipper still hasn’t “turned” it around yet, Mac hasn’t been consistent yet, and while I love our MVP, I know Bobby wants to throw nate back out there as soon as he gets the chance. Plus, missing Saito might be even more important than I thought.
We have traded away great players for less than nothing and let Texierra walk away, and much much more so pray that Hayward is sent from God and that his energy can ignite the veterans and cause the younger players to hustle more and play winning baseball...

Voted my first 9
Braves have held onto first for a couple of weeks now. Farm system is loaded with prospects. Future is bright!
Braves Win! Braves Win!
The braves are in first place despite a rash of injuries and playing the fewest home games in the majors. The braves also sport the highest home winning percentage in the majors, so if what they’re doing now is treading water, imagine when things start going well. They have pitching to spare and a bench full of more than capable starters. The minor leaguers are a fixture on BA’s hot sheets and they have 2 pitchers in contention for the title of best pitching prospect in the minors. The draft restocked the farm with good, athletic hitters and hopefully, chipper’s heir apparent will rise to the top of that group. All in all, I really don’t have very many negative things to say about this team, so I gave it a 10.
Chipper
I am really torn on my thoughts about Chipper Jones. I’m fine with his contract, he deserves it for the years of taking less pay to help the team. It was about this time last year that his average started to drop, his power is about gone, he’s not driving in runs, but he is still getting on base. He is still providing leadership and mentoring other players. I can’t remember the last time he bare handed a bunt and threw the runner out, he has lost a step or two defensively it seems. It is sort of sad to watch the guy, he has tremendous knowledge and skill, but his body is letting him down. Barring a turnaround, I just don’t expect Chipper to return next year. Actually, while I don’t expect it, I would not be totally surprised with a mid-season retirement. He would not announce in Sept and take away from Bobby’s retirement parade.
Heyward is pretty good
I don’t think Chipper would retire in mid-season and leave the team scrambling to find a new 3rd baseman. He’d never just give up and “quit”. I hope he becomes a hitting coach, because that’d be awesome and i want him to stay with the organization

I agree, but he might tell Wren to trade for a 3rd baseman if it’s coming. I’d have never posted that, but it hit me yesterday watching him watch the game with Conrad, both leaning against the rail, he looked like a guy that was done.
Heyward is pretty good
Glaus for third base in '11
I wonder if Glaus still has the mobility to play 3rd base. It would be perfect if we knew Chipper was gonna retire at the end of the season by mid season because we could try to lock Glaus up for a few years before he hits free agency. This is the ideal situation I see. I’d love to see Chipper as a hitting coach next year to work with Freeman, Heyward and Esobar. Him staying on as a coach is a must.
by michaelcooksey on Jun 14, 2010 2:27 PM EDT up reply actions
Freeman is only 20 yrs old. I see no need to rush him. AAA has been a challenge so far, I hope he gets another year unless he excells the rest of the season. If Glaus was available and reasonable, granted more than this years contract, I’d love to have him back for next year at 1st. Whatever Chipper decides to do, I’m fine with it, he has earned that as much as any player in MLB.
And I doubt we see Chipper as a full time coach/manager type anytime real soon. Maybe at spring training, or occasionally consulting with a few players, but he seems to want to go home with the kids.
Heyward is pretty good
Chipper would be a great hitting coach, but I think he’ll end up coaching his kids in little league

Yes he would
You’re probably right about the little league too. His dad worked with him, still does, he’d probably like to do the same. Isn’t that one of Wagner’s reasons for retiring too?
Heyward is pretty good
Yes,
I’ve heard this is the reason he and Wags are planning on retiring. I would love to have Chipper remain in the organization in some capacity, but I doubt he would agree to a full time job. I see him doing something part time as Glavine and Smolze are doing. All of these guys want to be more involved in coaching their kiddos and I respect them for that decision.
Chipper: "It has never been about money for me, and it never will be about money. It has always been about winning, comfort and playing for Bobby Cox."
I bet Chipper’s little league team would win the LL World Series. Plastic RINGZ!

Agreed
I’ve been saying it for a couple of weeks now. Let’s sign Glaus while we can. Obviously, he will get more money than what we are paying him this year. Eeven if he makes all his bonuses, he will max out at $4 mil this year. 6-8 mil a year for 2- 3 years. He might want to go ahead and signe with us now because we took the lyer on him last fall.
I've been saying this since seeing him play in ST.
This big guy can hit, and has played well at first also. I would love for FW to sign him for at the least one more year. This gives Freeman another year to make adjustments at the plate, and gain more experience playing first base.
Chipper: "It has never been about money for me, and it never will be about money. It has always been about winning, comfort and playing for Bobby Cox."
Freeman is the future, but it doesn’t have to start immediately. Glaus has been great with the exception of part of April. I have no clue what it would take to keep him, but he’s worth more than the $4 mil he could top out at this year.
Heyward is pretty good
I’m thinking $6-8 mil/yr with more guaranteed money, to lock him up right now. If he continues to perform as he has been for the last month and a half, he might get too expensive if we wait until the ofseason.
I have no clue what he’s worth, but his old contract was $12.5M for ’08 and an $11M option for ’09. He might want a lot.
Heyward is pretty good
Maybe we can have Tim Hudson talk to him. Also, his last contract was before he turned 30. Agreed he might want a lot, but if we show some interest now, offer him 2 or 3 years, we can get it done. while he might be gambling that he could get more if his production stays high, we would also be gambling that it will stay high enough to warrant that kind of money($6-8)mil/yr
veterans just don’t get locked up mid season, especially when they’re glaus’s age. If he has a year-long injury before year’s end, the braves will end up paying him an extra year for nothing. Teams are willing to do it with young guys because it’s still worth it to keep them even after their injury, but if glaus gets a major injury, he’ll be of little use to the braves going forward. If the braves want him for another year, they’ll wait until the offseason and hope for a discount.
His production has fallen off. In fact I beleive he has only 3 HR this year. However, he is getting on base a lot. It seems to me that the lineup is much better when he bats 3rd and Heyward bats 2nd. This may well be his last year and if so, I would love to see him, along with Bobby, go out with another ring.
I love Heyward in the 2 spot, but next year. I’m ready for him to go back to the 6 or 7 spot and learn to hit ML pitching. He is struggling bad when he’s in the 3 hole.
Heyward is pretty good
I agree he needs more seasoning. I was against moving him up that high in the order from the outset. However, I he landed there by default. I certainly think that having Chipper hiting behind him has helped him in the 2-hole.
I voted 9 for the first time, mainly because
we went 6-5: The Braves’ best record on a trip of 11 games or more since going 9-3 on a June 2001 trip.
We did this in spite of several guys playing with nagging injuries. Plus, our replacements have played very well defensively, and have come up with several clutch hits.
Chipper: "It has never been about money for me, and it never will be about money. It has always been about winning, comfort and playing for Bobby Cox."
I'm gonna go with a 4 today
and that’s because I’m feeling generous. KK still doesn’t win. Chipper needs to retire. Bobby is old and can’t manage anymore. Heyward should go to AAA cause he Ks too much.
Bad season.

9, because this organization is divine.
The next Big Three hopefully at Myrtle Beach, a great draft, and we’re still in first after this hellish road trip. Still pumped about the suicide squeeze Saturday FTW.

He's probably top two without someone added in a trade...
Chipper just doesn’t have the bat speed I guess, McCann has decent power but he’s a 20-25 HR guy, other than Glaus and JHey, we really are lacking in that department. Hinske would probably be with McCann a step behind them.
So, this may not really be the time or place, but does anyone still think that Heyward is the best power hitter on the team this year?
