Atlanta Braves Minor League Hotsheet: 6/7-6/13
We had a different week for the Braves farms system as we had more hot hitters than hot pitchers for once. Gwinnett went 3-4 on the week, Mississippi 2-5, Myrtle Beach had a winning record at 4-3, and Rome went 2-3. None of the Braves full season farm teams has a winning record with Myrtle Beach and Rome both in last place and Gwinnett in second in their division though still 9.5 games out. The DSL Braves are 8-3.
Who's Hot?
- Mycal Jones - 10-26 3 2B, 2 SB - Jones was the worst hitter for the Rome Braves in April but he exploded in May and got even better as the month wore on until he got his much deserved promotion to Myrtle Beach where he just kept on hitting. Those stats actually include the 0-7 he ended his Rome tenure on so he has been on an absolute tear with the Pelicans so far. Jones has shown better pop than I expected this season and while he is a little old for the leagues he has played in so far if he can keep producing and get a late season promotion to Mississippi he would solidify his status as the Braves best infield prospect.
- Chris Resop - 9IP 1H 0R 0BB 8K - Resop pitched the game of his life the other night and will be with a major league team in some capacity come June 15th. I don't know what the Braves will do with him and I would love for them to hold on to him but I don't think we really need him and if we can get something valuable for him we should do it.
- Cory Harrilchak - 7-19 RBI, 4BB, 5 SB, 1 CS - Cory Harrilchak has been hitting up around .330 for the last month and a half with a 22:22 K:BB for the season. Year to date his SB numbers look a little rough but he has been 11/15 since the start of May after 4/9 in April. If he can develop any sort of power he could be a very useful outfielder in the future.
- Randall Delgado - 6IP 4H 1R 2BB 7K - Ho-Hum just another fantastic start for Randall Delgado. He has allowed just 10 ER since the start of may in just under 50 innings which comes out to a 1.82 ERA during that span with a 58/11 K/BB. I'll take that every day of the week.
Honorable Mentions: Gwinnett - Matt Young, Todd Redmond, Mike Dunn, Barbaro Canizares; Mississippi - Donell Linares, Willie Cabrera, Scott Diamond; Myrtle Beach - Jesus Sucre, Matt Crim, Julio Teheran, Brett Oberholtzer; Rome - Jordan Kreke, Robinson Lopez.
Who's Not?
- Mike Minor - 9.1IP 16H 12R 9ER 2BB 5K - Minor has actually given up 5+ runs 5 times this season though not all of those were earned. In fact, if you take out his June 3 start he has given up 19 runs in his last 15 innings. His K rate was also way down this week though his walks were down as well. Minor has been a bit erratic all season long and he has bounced back from these erratic stretches so hopefully this is just a bump in the road and not an indication of something dire.
- Cody Johnson - 4-26 2B, 3 BB, 2 RBI, SB, CS, 15K - Cody just missed the top of this list by having an OK day today (still 3 Ks). Surprisingly this was better than his first week this month. In June he is batting .122 with just one XBH and 24K. I don't even know the last time he hit a homer, his lone calling card these days. He also has just 3 hits in 44 ABs against LHP this season with a depressing .298 OPS to show for it.
- Jose Ortegano - 8.1IP 16H 13R 4BB 7K - Ortegano was actually pretty good in his first 3 starts with AAA after he started the season back at Mississippi even though he was good there last season (numbers game can be a pain). I wouldn't be surprised though at some point this season he made the full time move to lefty reliever that has been predicted for him as his stuff just may not play up to higher competition.
- Cory Gearrin - 2IP 2H 2R 3BB 2K - It was actually kind of hard finding someone else to put on this list because there weren't a lot of terrible performances this week. Just a lot of mediocre. Gearrin however has been bad for a couple of weeks now giving up runs in 4 of his last 5 appearances and 3 straight. He has allowed 15 ER on the year and 7 of those have come since May 28. His command has been a bit shaky this season and his hits allowed are finally catching up to him this season. We will see if he can make adjustments and remain competitive in the Braves prospect reliever market.
Dishonorable Mentions: Gwinnett - Jordan Schafer, Brandon Hicks; Mississippi - Ricahrd Sullivan, Lee Hyde; Matt Kennelly, LV Ware, Arodys Vizcaino;
Stock Up - Any teenagers on the DSL roster. This team is winning games in bunches with only one guy on the roster than any of us really know anything about in Edward Salcedo, but guys like Aris Alcantara, Hector Garcia, Abraham Espinosa and Jesus Saldeno have all been having great seasons so far and giving us reasons to get excited just like Andy Otero and Edison Sanchez did a year ago.
Stock Down - Kyle Rose. I was super excited about this guy early on as he was hitting everything in sight, had a good eye and stole a lot of bases efficiently last season and he was even learning to switch hit! Well he has been caught in nearly 55% of his SB attempts, has K'd in nearly 25% of his ABs and his AVG is steadily falling (though he had a little resurgence this week) and he isn't learning to switch hit now. I know I got really excited about the guy at the beginning of the season but he is young and has time to turn things around, I think I just need to temper my expectations for him. He also has just 5 XBH in 200 AB this year.

I love you, man...
But there really needs to be more commas and/or shorter sentences in your writing. We still appreciate you staying on the pulse of minor league ball. Keep it up!

pretty lazy journalism
We have traded away great players for less than nothing and let Texierra walk away, and much much more so pray that Hayward is sent from God and that his energy can ignite the veterans and cause the younger players to hustle more and play winning baseball...
You know if I got paid for this it would be one thing.but I volunteer my evenings to do this for the community and have been for several years now and if.you consider it lazy to spend time doing something for other people when I dont have to you can Fuck off

Oooh, sorry man, apparently you missed the Resop article I put up the other day that caused one fool to make the “lazy journalism” crack. I’m about 99.9% positive these guys were just continuing the joke that’s risen out of that. I’m also 100% positive everyone here loves and appreciates all the stuff you do for the site.

Ooooooooh well then I retract my previous statement and offer a posture of contrition and humility in place of my harsh tone

Haha. You had basically the same reaction I had to the guy who was genuine about it, so nobody can blame you.

And if they don't like it,...
they can start their own blog. Or make fan posts and fan shots and generate a following, cause it’s not like gondee is afraid to put talented people to work as we’ve seen with pacgnosis (not that mvhs guy, he sucks and should be fired post haste).
The fact that this site has the wealth of information it does, through what I assume is all, or at least mostly, volunteer work is absolutely amazing. Thanks to both of you in a big way; most of us wouldn’t know what to do without you anymore.
Hopefully this is Cody Johnson's wake up call...
and we find out if he can fix whatever holes are in his swing. Maybe a Mike Stanton like approach would help?
And not that it really matters, but Ortegano was in Myrtle, not Mississippi to start, and it wasn’t a numbers crunch as much as he was sore this spring and didn’t throw more than an inning or two in spring training games, so the stint was said to be his spring training build up to stretch out innings.
Yea I really hope Cody Johnson wakes up. I really thought that he cut down his Ks and increase his walks, but he still very young and got plenty of time to work on holes in his game

Damn maybe I should just quit. I apparently can’t do anything right today

Wanna rough one?...
Try living in 100 degrees, with your a/c going out last night, your refrigerator going out this morning, and ants all over the unopened box of delicious donuts you got from the grocery store last night. Talk about a bad start to the day.
And thanks for all you do yonda. As said above, it’s not like it makes that much of a difference on Ortagno, was just clarifying. Regardless, the point is he struggled at a level he’d already mastered to start the year, had a good start in AAA once he arrived there, and has struggled since. That’s essentially what you were trying to say, and you said it well.

That’s a rough day for sure. I woke up a couple weeks ago and had blown a breaker on the dryer which tied to the fridge and had apparently sprung a leak above the sink. Win. I feel your pain sir

Is there a reason everyone keeps typing his name as Mychal because I have only seen it as Mycal.
by yondaime4 on Jun 14, 2010 11:59 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
It’s Mycal. Baltimore’s 1st round draft pick last year was Mychal Givens, so maybe that’s leading to the confusion. Or maybe people just don’t take the time to try to spell unusual names correctly.

Or maybe the IPod Touch is extremely hard to type on….

Hey CB, right before Mycal got his promotion to the Beach I caught part of the series in Charleston with the Riverdogs. Anyway, as I was walking in late with my kids he hits a homer in the first inning of that Saturdays game. The ball landed in the street right in front of where my kids and i were walking. What do ya think the chances are of me getting that ball signed? Is there any process where I could have it sent to MB or do they not really do things like that? Really, I just would like to get something signed for my lil’ boy. He thought it was awesome that we picked up the homerun ball. Especially after I showed him who hit it. Lol, everytime he made a play after that my son was like, “Dad! That’s the guy that hit the homer!” I know the answer is probably no but I figured you would know better than anyone.
If you mail the ball to the stadium care of Myke Jones with a pen and a box and postage to have it sent back to you, I guarantee he’ll sign it for you. You just have to make sure you have the postage and the box to have it sent back to you. Guys don’t mind signing stuff in the mail but they’re not going to pay to send things to you.

Awesome! Thanks for the reply! I will do that. I’m gonna be up in MB watching some games hopefully in the next two weeks anyway. I really hate that we have the Yankees farmhands down here and I have to go to Myrtle to watch the Braves. I usually try as hard as possible to avoid Myrtle, although the Park itself is really nice.
God, it’s good to see Mycal going nuts. I’m not putting too much stock in a hot streak, but man wouldn’t it be nice if he could keep this up? We really need the MI help in the system.

A hot streak is one thing, but he’s been outstanding for a month and a half, that’s just playing well when it’s that long of a period.

I agree. The other thing I noticed about him is that the guy is just quick! I don’t mean fast, I mean quick! Quick with the bat, quick to move to the ball, quick to the throw. Seems like a lil’ bit of nervous energy. I think that once he gets that under control that his fielding will improve as well.
Resop
MLBTR says Resop is not going to be traded unless the Braves can get something “amazing” in return, says Rosenthal. Does that mean Resop gets the call today prior to tomorrow’s 6/15 deadline?
