More On A Possible Braves' Chris Resop Trade

Jon Paul Morosi of Fox Sports has some more information on what the Braves will do with Chris Resop:

The trade market for Braves minor leaguer Chris Resop has yet to develop. Perhaps that will change, given his performance Thursday in the final start prior to his June 15 out clause. [...]

One way or the other, Resop should be in the big leagues soon. The Braves have determined that they won’t lose him without getting something in return.

We reported here yesterday that the Braves were indeed trying to trade Chris Resop, and if they couldn't they would likely call him up to the Majors. That was reinforced by his one-hit shutout yesterday in a dominating performance over Norfolk. It's good to hear it said that the Braves won't lose him without getting something in return. (And hopefully by "something" they mean a good prospect or a useful bat of some kind.)

I imagine a lot of what happens may depend on the near-term status of Nate McLouth. This is because to re-call Resop the Braves will have to open up a spot on their 40-man roster. If they have to DL McLouth, their first choice would probably be to activate Brent Clevlen off the DL if he is ready. If he is not ready, then the only other outfield option on the 40-man roster is Jordan Schafer, who they probably don't want to, but might have to call up to take his spot. I get the feeling though, that the Braves don't want to call Schafer up to the Majors this season, and save an option on him. If not Schafer, then they would have to put another outfielder on the 40-man roster to call him up to the Majors. Though I suppose they could opt to recall Brandon Hicks, and let Omar Infante play some outfield if need be (like he did last night).

CB was at yesterday's game in Norfolk and got to talk to Resop, he should have a story up soon.

I was present for CB’s interview with Resop, but I will refrain from posting any spoilers:)

Shouldn't Brent Clevlen get a shot in LF before...awww, forget it!

Aww, you’re no fun!

I find the idea of resop being on our roster intriguing. He can be a spot starter or long reliever. He may also be much more valuable as trade material towards the deadline. I think if we can’t get some immediate help in a trade right now, we should keep him for another month or so, when other teams are desperate

realistically

We wouldn’t be able to get much outside of a player in a similar situation as Resop unless it was a package deal or the Royals were dumb enough to give us DeJesus

Also I am just confused why this team refuses to call up Matt Young.

by drumzalicious on Jun 11, 2010 2:23 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

That’s why I say wait until the trade deadline and we might get some value for him.

They refuse to call up Young because he's never hit well above AA.

last time i checked

he was doing pretty well in AAA after a rough start

Why would we need another OF if McLouth was DL'd?

You’d have Heyward, Melky, Hinske from right to left. With Infante able to the the righty platoon for Hinske against lefties, and Blanco as 4th OF/defensive replacement. So why the need for a 5th OF? I’d think we could call up Canizares to replace Hinske’s role as backup 1B, that is if he’s on the 40 man.

Big-C is not on the 40.

I prefer Cuban B...

and damn, I guess that leaves just Hicks and Sammons if Clevlen isn’t ready.

Does Luis Valdez count if he’s on the “restricted” list? If not that’s an obvious spot to make a move with the 40 man roster. Other than him, I could see maybe Clevlen dropped, or Hicks as he’s struggling to hit at AAA. Jeff Lyman and Kyle Cofield aren’t exactly putting up performances that would make others desperate for their services either if they got dropped from the 40 man.

by Mr. Sanchez on Jun 11, 2010 4:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Valdez does not count.

And I think any of those guys could get through except Hicks. Too young and too good in the field to give him up.

Then we have an open spot or I can't count...

http://atlanta.braves.mlb.com/team/roster_40man.jsp?c_id=atl

I count 41, with Diory Hernandez as the extra since he’s on the 60 day DL. That would mean, imo, Valdez does count.

Valdez doesn’t count. Players on the restricted list are not counted against your 40 man.

Saw that in your other article on Resop...

so I guess adding him isn’t a worry. Nor would have been adding Canizares, Mitch Jones, or Wes Timmons to fill McLouth’s spot on the 25 man while he’s on the DL letting Schafer keep rehabbing in AAA. Then Resop can either replace one of those 3, or one of the Ps who’ve struggled at lower levels this year like Lyman or Cofield. Considering Cofield is on the 7day DL, I really doubt he’d be claimed.

Disregard entirely as I see because of Infante hitting his foot, we called up Hicks instead of Schafer.

You don't need to keep 40 on your 40.

I'm aware...

but most teams, especially those with several on the DL, do.

Trade

Any way we can package him with an outfielder and minor leaguer and get something decent in return? I’d cream my pants if we could somehow Rasmus from the Cards but its only a very optimistic dream.

by RufRider on Jun 11, 2010 3:19 PM EDT reply actions

resop for cory rasmus would be a more reasonable value than colby rasmus. The cards wouldn’t trade him for teheran or vizcaino straight up.

by telemakhos on Jun 11, 2010 4:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah… Hopefully his bro can turn out to be as good as him in the majors a few years down the road. Sucks that he’s a pitcher in an already stacked system, but who knows what’s gonna happen in the future.
