Gwinnett - posponed, snow
Snow in May? Ugh. You could never convince me there's anything good about living up north. On the bright side though, Freddie Freeman did get to see snow for the first time ever.
Mississippi4, Birmingham 5
Down 5 to nothing in the bottom of the 9th the M-Braves did their best to comeback against the Barons. Benji Johnson drove in Cody Johnson, no relation, with a bases load walk, then Benji, Randy Gress, and Orlando Mercado were all driven in on a double by Willie Cabrera. But, after 2 pitching changes and a walk, Barons pitcher Anthony Carter was able to induce Mauro Gomez into a double play. Erik Cordier picks up his third loss this season. He hasn't been pitching that poorly, but he has been walking too many, a reoccuring problem for him year after year.
Myrtle Beach 2, Lynchburg 1
Randall Delgado continues his fantastic work. In his last 18 innings, covering 3 starts, he's allowed just 4 earned runs, walked just 4, and struck out 23. Angelo Paulino has been wonderful out of the bullpen as well. He hasn't allowed a run in his last 7 appearances, spanning 12.1 innings. The lanky right hander has struck out 15 and walked just 1 during that streak. Cole Miles has very little power, but he's a triple waiting to happen, as hit one in his third straight game today. His 4 triples account for a fifth of his hits this season.
Rome 4, Asheville 2
Chris Masters continues to dominate and might not be long for Rome. He strikes out 10 Tourists today, giving him 41 Ks in 38 innings this season. He's only allowing 3.3 hits per 9 innings this season, and walking just 2.4 per 9, so he really has been making the other teams look bad. After going hitless in his first 3 games with the team, Robby Hefflinger is now on an 8 game hitting streak. Jordan Kreke must only have bad games when I'm not paying attention, because it always seems like he has a hit or 2 when I'm doing the writeup. This week he's 7 for 25 with 2 doubles and 4 RBI. Ty'relle Harris gave up a run in the 9th, but picked up his team leading 4th save. Impressive since he spent a week with Myrtle Beach.

I live in Syracuse
because I go to Syracuse University.
It really was snowing here today (I was supposed to go the game…ugh.) with upwards of 30 MPH winds, too.

But I loved Syracuse when i lived there (ESF alumni). There is always a chance for snow between September 15th and May 15th.

Basically the same for Boston.
I loved living in Boston. You never quite get used to the snow, but it really is a cool place to live.

I am from Syracuse and have been there 24 years now, as much as I would like to live some where warmer, I love Syracuse and I think it is a great place to raise a family.

I don't disagree
with the family parts. For the bad rep it gets, there are a ton of nice places in the city and the suburbs for families.
After graduating, though, if I don’t find a job somewhere in CNY I won’t be terribly upset. Besides not being able to go to basketball games anymore.

Depends on what you mean by legit. He’s definitely going to be in the conversation more now than he was last year. Guys with his kind of stuff usually find the most resistance once they hit AA though and he’s one of the older pitchers on the team so we’ll need to see him at higher levels but early returns are promising.
I still think Masters compares favorably to Chuck James. Most people in the organization say masters is a lot more coachable than James was. I think he will probably own competition until he hits AA and even there i think here will do well.
I’d agree with the coachability. Masters is a very, very smart dude. I want to see him move up to MB soon since I think that’s a lot more appropriate given his age and I’d like to see what he can do with better competition. I know Crim was the Appy League Pitcher of the the year last year, but if you really break down the numbers and look at something other than wins, Masters was definitely the best pitcher.

Just for giggles I was looking at some stats. The Braves currently have 4 of the top 10 guys in the minors in strikeouts including 2 and 3 (Minor, Delgado, Masters and Teheran). Teheran is also having one of the two or three best all around seasons in the minors. He ranks in the top 10 in ERA, WHIP and Ks. Delgado is top 6 in ERA, K and WHIP in the Carolina league. Masters has matched Teheran in just about everything except for Runs allowed. Now if we could just get some hitters to have the same kind of season as these guys.

I said “we don’t have many”. JJ and Huddy are both low 90s pitchers. I’m talking about fireballers who can sometimes get away with bad location and/or command because they throw so hard.
I know Hanson is and so is Kimbrel. Wags is, but he’ll be gone in 5 months. Besides them we don’t have any hard throwers.

Our BP
Is full of hard throwers. Chavez and Venters consistently hit mid 90s. Saito has hit 95 a couple times.
TheseThere are just bullpen pitchers. The Braves go through relievers like a 6-year old girl goes through coloring books. Saito is on a 1 year deal and won’t be back next season. Chavez and Venters could stick around for a few years, but again the Braves change up their bullpen all the time.
I was talking about starters. Huddy has never really been a “power” guy and neither has JJ. Both really rely on keeping the ball down in the zone and they have to locate their pitches better than a power thrower like JT, Vizzy, Delgado and Minor all project to be. I’m not saying guys who throw hard don’t have to locate their pitches, but they can get away with it at times because of the velosity and movement on their pitches.
That’s all I was saying.

Minor isn’t the power arm that our latin kings trio is but he has above average velocity for a lefthander and should post decent K/9.
I like big arms and big K totals for pitchers and it’s especially important in the playoffs. Strike zone tightens up, hitters concentration and intensity goes up and pitcher’s mistakes are magnified and guys with bigger arms can get away with more mistakes in that circumstance.

I really don’t see a lack of velocity. We’ve got our ground ball guys, for better or worse, and we’ve got our power arms. JJ uses mixes in the 89-91 range, but it’s not like I haven’t seen him hit 96 in the 6th and 7th innings when he lets his four-seamer go. So it’s not like he doesn’t have that power arm.
Long term though we may really bring the heat. Delgado is starting to look like he could be a real power arm. And he’s got easy gas and has really tightened up the command. And he’s just 20. Teheran and him both may have triple digit potential as they mature.
It’s not like every team is sending a Verlander or Jimenez out there every night. And those guys who throw that hard every night have their own set-backs as well.

I saw that too. I know he’s good, but I’m not sure he’s “Christ” good. Only Heyward qualifies for that.

My father was in the military for 26 yrs and we lived in NY for 2 and I hated it so much I moved back to Ga. with my grandmother.

Lived in SC all my life till 2008 and moved into the mountains of WV. If it wasn’t for my GF i would have moved back to the south 10 minutes after I got here.
WV isnt the north
maybe weather wise but nothing else about WV is northern.
