The difference is that the Royals’ brass is deliberately trying to run the team into the ground, or so it seems. The Braves, on the other hand, are having a player performance deficiency, which is either more or less painful, depending on how you look at it.

It’s Wren’s call.

You honestly think Bobby wouldn’t carry some degree of weight in decisions about his coaching staff?

by J-Freak on May 7, 2010 8:38 PM EDT up reply actions

I didn't say "no weight"

I said it wasn’t his call. And it isn’t. Wren is Bobby’s boss. Frank might ask Bobby’s opinion, but Bobby can’t stop him from doing anything.

"Yeah, and I have an enchanted jock strap." -- Karl Karlson

by Jacob Peterson on May 7, 2010 8:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I just don’t see Wren showing someone the door, though, if Bobby says no. It may not technically be his call, but for all intents and purposes I think it basically is at this point.

by J-Freak on May 7, 2010 8:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I kind of agree

But we are getting to the point where some change is going to be mandatory. Just because it’s Bobby’s last season doesn’t meant the organization should run any differently

by royhobbs on May 7, 2010 8:42 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think so at all

Wren is a GM. He makes tough calls. Just look at the Glavine thing. I’m sure Bobby didn’t say “dump Glavine”, but Wren did it.

That’ll be fun. Cause when the team finally starts to hit all the people on here will attribute it to TP being fired, when in reality it’s just that these hitters finally started breaking out of their slumps.

Well there's a difference

The manager actually matters somewhat, especially if the team has quit on him (which they obviously had for Hurdle). The hitting coach just doesn’t really matter. Firing him almost certainly won’t improve things.

Maybe it will jolt some of these guys though. I mean, Chipper, Glaus and Heyward are doing their things, but Matty, Melky, Nate and others are clearly in need of a shot to the arm – figuratively.

"Yeah, and I have an enchanted jock strap." -- Karl Karlson

by Jacob Peterson on May 7, 2010 8:41 PM EDT up reply actions

As I said in a post the other day, my problem with Melky is really the way Bobby is using him. If he was being used like a real 4th outfielder, I wouldn’t hate him. Getting 1 start a week, filling in for an injury, coming in as a defensive replacement, he would be ok.

But he’s getting run out everyday, because he’s the 9th highest paid player on the team, and the 4th highest paid position player. That money should be going to somebody who can at least hit his own weight.

Shouldn't Wes Timmons get a shot at 3B over that Chipper guy everybody talks about?

by Rhyno18 on May 7, 2010 8:43 PM EDT up reply actions

He's getting run out there everyday

because he’s been better than Diaz. That’s the reason. If Diaz and McLouth were hitting, Melky would be more of a 4th OF in all likelihood.

"Yeah, and I have an enchanted jock strap." -- Karl Karlson

by Jacob Peterson on May 7, 2010 8:45 PM EDT up reply actions

They both have been really sucky. If Milky has been better, it’s by a hair. But how can you blame Bobby when all 3 have been crap fro the most part.

by FitzFan on May 7, 2010 8:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Look at OBP

Melky has walked WAY more than Matt. That is why he’s been better. Other than that, they’re about the same. Also, I think Melky has been less brutal defensively.

"Yeah, and I have an enchanted jock strap." -- Karl Karlson

by Jacob Peterson on May 7, 2010 8:49 PM EDT up reply actions

didn’t you learn anything from Frenchy? OBP isn’t important

Shouldn't Wes Timmons get a shot at 3B over that Chipper guy everybody talks about?

by Rhyno18 on May 7, 2010 8:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Diaz and McLouth are losing ABs to Melky, have been from the beginning of the season, because of Melky’s salary. That hurts the team. Had Bobby gone with a solid 3 man outfield with just a 4th outfielder being used like I said above, I’m pretty sure Diaz and McLouth would be hitting much better. But Melky and his 3 million get to play everyday. The 3 million we couldn’t afford to give, oh say…Kelly Johnson, who is making the decision to non-tender him look pretty fucking stupid right about now. I said in a post right after we got stuck with Melky that if he got the 120 starts people were predicting that we would be no better than 3rd in the NL East, and right now it looks like I might have given Atlanta too much credit. Melky is horrible as a starter, and always will be. total waste of money Atlanta can’t afford to throw away.

Shouldn't Wes Timmons get a shot at 3B over that Chipper guy everybody talks about?

by Rhyno18 on May 7, 2010 8:52 PM EDT up reply actions

He was decent last year as a starter.

And he’s making the least of all our OFs. So your argument makes no sense.

"Yeah, and I have an enchanted jock strap." -- Karl Karlson

by Jacob Peterson on May 7, 2010 8:54 PM EDT up reply actions

The only outfielder we have making more than Melky is McLouth.

Diaz is at 2.5 mil, Heyward makes the minimum. Check Cot’s for the numbers. Melky is our 4th highest paid position player behind Chipper, McCann and McLouth. My arguement makes plenty of sense if you spend the 20 seconds to do the research

Shouldn't Wes Timmons get a shot at 3B over that Chipper guy everybody talks about?

by Rhyno18 on May 7, 2010 9:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t get it. What does Milky’s salary have to do with it? Isn’t Nate making more than him? Matty’s barely making less than him. Milky has walked more, but they’ve all been pretty brutal & all have had their fair chance.

by FitzFan on May 7, 2010 9:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Because hitting a baseball is all about timing and adjustments. McLouth can’t make them if he’s been a starter his whole career and now loses 3 starts a week to Melky.

Here’s the thing. Panicking might be a bit much, but there should be alarms going off. It’s not April anymore, we’re approaching the middle of May. And this isn’t just a slump, it’s been this way all season. And if we get swept, which is a real possibility, we will be 8 games behind. That’s a lot to come back from. A whole hell of a lot
