Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 5/6

In his last 10 innings, lefty Mike Minor has 21 strikeouts and only 5 walks.

Gwinnett 5, Syracuse 9

  • G. Blanco 3-5, .271
  • W. Timmons 1-5, .301
  • F. Freeman 1-4, .284
  • B. Clevlen 2-4, 2B, 2 RBI, SB (2), .299
  • J. Thurston 2-4, 2B, 2 RBI, .230
  • T. Redmond 3 IP, 8 R, 6 ER, 8 H, 1 BB, 3 K, 4.59
  • Wes Timmons and Freddie Freeman both extend their hit streaks to 6 games. Gregor Blanco stays hot despite the off day yesterday, with 5 hits and a walk in his last 9 plate appearances. This may have been Todd Redmond's worst start as a member of the Braves organization as the typically reliable workhorse got knocked around and only lasted 3 innings.

    Mississippi 3, Birmingham 5

  • W. Cabrera 3-4, 2 2B, 2 RBI, .274
  • C. Johnson 1-4, 2B, .236
  • M. Minor 5 IP, 4 ER, 6 H, 2 BB, 10 K, 4.99
  • Mike Minor reached double digits in strikeout for the second game in a row, fanning 10 Barons hitters, but still gets mixed results, allowing 4 runs in 5 innings and making another throwing error. Still, he striking out 13.9 per 9 innings and striking out 2.42 per walk. With those kind of crazy good numbers things will eventually turn very positive for him. Willie Cabrera stays hot with a pair of doubles and a pair of RBI and he's now 9 for his last 17 with 3 doubles, a home run, and 6 RBI in that span. He's a talented player, and still just 23, so it's great to see him making the adjustments that seemed to elude him last season.

    Myrtle Beach 0, Potomac 4

  • M. Crim 4 IP, 3 ER, 5 H, 3 BB, 2 K, 3.67
  • J. Abreu 1.2 IP, 0 R, 3 K, 8.22
  • The Pelicans get shut out for the second night in a row, collecting their 5th loss in their last 6 games. The team actually outhit the P-Nats, but all 7 of their hits were singles. Juan Abreu might have figured something out; in his last 2 appearances he's thrown 3.1 innings and struck out 5 while walking 2. Pelicans outfielder Adam Milligan was placed on the disabled list with a sore left shoulder. He injured the shoulder making a dive for a ball in the outfield and after letting him try to play through the pain the Braves decided it would be best to rest him for a bit. The injury greatly affected his swing and had a lot to do with the severe dropoff in his production after the first week of the season.

    Rome 9, Hagerstown 5

  • M. Jones 2-3 2 2B, RBI, BB, .172
  • R. Hefflinger 2-3, GS (1), 6 RBI, BB, .333
  • J. Kreke 2-5, 2B, 3B, RBI, .250
  • B. Schlehuber 2-4, 2B, .167
  • A Vizcaino 5 IP, 4 R, 3 ER, 5 H, 2 BB, 5 K, W (4), 4.35
  • At least one Braves team won tonight, even if the game actually started at 10:35 AM. Myke Jones may be turning things around as he hits a pair of doubles and is now 8 for his last 23, with 4 doubles, 2 home runs, and 6 RBI, raising his average from .118 to .172 in that 6 game span. Robby Hefflinger continues his great start after missing the first part of the year with mono, driving in 6 runs, 4 of them coming on a grand slam. The right fielder is an absolutely massive hulk of a human being and could become one of the team's better outfield prospects. On the negative side, Christian Bethancourt is really fighting it, going hitless in his last 21 at bats. Arodys Vizcaino is one of the few pitchers in the entire sport who has recieved a decision in each of his starts, collecting his 4th win in a relatively average appearance.

I wonder if Minor is trying to overthrow?

I have nothing to back that up with, but it could explain the increase in Ks as well as the increase in runs if he’s hanging some pitches. Nevertheless, hopefully he can start reducing those runs allowed, because those Ks are looking mighty promising.

    How is the Miss defense?

Something seems strange with his high K totals, but being extremely hittable. Guys must be swinging an awful lot at his pitches.

And for gondee, is Hefflinger still doing the diary?

Yeah I still remain baffled. He is actually leading the minors in Ks right now, but I still remain a little wary of his newfound strikeout ability simply because this was never his profile. Maybe someone tweaked his delivery in Arizona and he picked up some velocity and he is learning to harness it. I really can’t say.

Is there pitch f(x) or at least some "advanced" stats available somewhere?

I’ve never found a reliable source for MiLB’ers. But this would be an awesome case study to see his college vs. now, even in a small sample, just to see if anything is truly different.

Minor League Splits is a really good site

They use FIP instead of ERA and have an option to neutralize luck. With luck neutralized, his FIP drops to 3.23. Hitters are also hitting just 12.6% line drives off of Minor, so he definitely isn’t “hittable”

I was going to ask, does this sound like something the pitching coach in Miss would do? Put extra emphasis on getting Minor to give each pitch a little extra?

Greg White should keep streaking in AAA.

Hefflinger has really started out nicely. Hopefully he’s showing that he’s made some strides with his contact and plate discipline.

He was 3-4 in the game I was at Monday night and was just killing the ball. When I saw him last year I was very impressed by his potential and I think there’s a real chance he’s going to do some serious damage on the Sally League.

I've been wondering about that too

You’ve asked a lot more than I have, but still no answer. Either he forgot, decided against it, had his internet priviledges pulled or had nothing to report. I was looking forward to the weekly pieces.

    Heyward is pretty good

Well, he wasn’t doing anything the first month other than sitting around trying to not be sick anymore, so there really wouldn’t have been anything to write about. Now that he’s back, my guess is he’ll keep his word and end up writing something for us.

I figured it would be delayed while he was on the shelf...

but now that he’s back, thought maybe he’d be able to write. Thanks for the answer cb.
