Braves Quote For The Day

Photo

The Braves' Chipper Jones on the magical strike zone in last night's loss:

"That ball was in," Jones said. "I hit that ball off my left ring finger if I swung at that. I’m hitting .200; I’m not exactly sure where the strike zone is (but) I didn’t think it was a strike. I came back up here and looked at it (on the video monitor), it’s not a strike. You get a call like that, that’s how you throw 41 pitches in the first and get out of it with one run."

I like the humility of Chipper to say that a .200 hitter is a little unsure of the strike zone.

Epidemic of the year

Gage23 said it best – visual representation of the strike zone all throughout MLB this year:

An amoeba, complete with the little bowler hat that says “F YOU BATTER THAT’S A STRIKE NOW”

/yes, I know I used an animated gif file, but it was to prove my point, and involved no horses sliding under trucks, or Japanese commercials of people in dog suits.

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

The amoeba shaped strike zone was definitely a highlight comment.

Look

It was either use the animated gif, or make a really obscure NBA Jam analogy about the 6-pointer shots being well inside the arc, being kind of like how the bonus strike is randomly placed in or out of the K-zone.

That was the stupid NBA Jam though, I think that was on Super Nintendo.

Gotta go with Sega. Tournament Edition, Charlotte Hornets. LJ and Mourning. Unstoppable baby!

by kreese555 on May 5, 2010 1:42 PM EDT up reply actions

You could play with the 6-point shots on Tournament Edition too. You just had to turn the mode on. I believe they even had 10-point shots.

There’s a bar here Sacramento that has NBA Jam: Tournament Edition on the Sega set up for anybody to play. Pretty sweet if you ask me.

People will come Ray. The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. I'm comin' over

We can drink our land value losses away while I own you with the Denver Nuggets tandem of Mahmoud-Abdul Rauf and Dikembe Mutombo with Mutombo catching fire and hitting the 8-pointers.

No way dude! Hornacek and Stockton get hurt too easy.

LJ and Mourning have the height to block shots, the strength to push people down/not get hurt, and LJ can drain from deep. I never switch my lineup. Those 2, the entire game. Del Curry/Mugsy Bogues? Pfffttt

by kreese555 on May 5, 2010 5:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I think you're right about that. You get on fire and just drain. Never like it much though.

No one’s willing to debate that the Hornets are the best team? Guess everyone knows how true it is… haha

by kreese555 on May 5, 2010 5:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Mourning/LJ had the best stats, no red numbers, but it’s still a game relative to player’s skill. I could own people with the LA Clippers (when they sucked) with like Ron Harper and Danny Manning, no matter if they chose the Hornets, Sonics, or Spurs.

I am assuming you posted this before my comment about the Jazz?

Also, the Spurs were nice in that game too. I won a lot with them.

This.

All of the special codes were awesome – dunk from anywhere, always on fire, play with Hillary Clinton, Jazzy Jeff, or any other myriad of people – classic.

for real

NBA jams for Super Nintendo was perhaps one of the most classic games of that era. Does anyone remember the game for Ninendo called Bird vs. Jordan, where it was just Larry Bird playing Michael jordan?

by Shoert on May 5, 2010 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Really?

Jordan vs. Bird only in a game called “Jordan vs. Bird?” Gosh, you would think they should’ve thrown in guys like Charles Barkley, Dominique Wilkins, and Karl Malone in there or something.

Sorry, couldn’t resist

Guess this is more of an argument for Sega > SNES

Cause you could do all those things on Sega too. I played SNES, but mostly at friends’ houses and mainly Mario Kart. Which is a great game.

by kreese555 on May 5, 2010 5:55 PM EDT up reply actions

It was very inconsistent.

Is it only teams that lose (or maybe just us Braves’ fans) that seem to notice the inconsistancy of umpiring this year?

Not even close

The questionable umping is all around baseball, and I’m pretty sure it has plenty to do with the mass-ump firing over the offseason due to a lot of bad playoff calls. Way too many greenhorn umps getting the call to ump in the big leagues when they’re evidently a little unprepared this year, and it’s showing.

I agree,

I read other teams open threads and they are complaining also, even the winning teams.

by HEYJUDE on May 5, 2010 12:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Not really

In one of the other threads about the game last night, someone was saying how the 3-2 pitch that K’ed desmond late in the game was “ankle high” (i.e. the call benefited the Braves but we still called it BS). I saw the replay live and it was just below the kneecap, so not THAT bad, but pretty borderline all in all.

by fphjr01 on May 5, 2010 2:17 PM EDT up reply actions

The ump’s zone wasn’t THAT bad, but he did miss some big calls.

That pitch to Chipper did cut back in and paint the corner.

strike zone

I was watching the catcher and where he set up and where the ball went for both teams. Livan was pretty hitting his spots every time so Pudge didn’t have to move. KK on the other hand was leaving a lot over the plate and made Heap move around. An ump is going to naturally expand the strike zone to Livan.

The baseball gods are paying us back for Tommy Gun getting the calls in yrs past.

by Chesterhighwater on May 5, 2010 1:16 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

And didn’t they say before they game we had a good crew calling the games this series?

by scottsharp76 on May 5, 2010 1:17 PM EDT reply actions

I was watching the A’s game & Rich Harden was running to 1st to tag the bag & he completely ran past it w/o touching it. The 1st base ump instead of asking for help just called him out. Eventually the freaking 3rd base ump had to correct the call.

Umps don’t seem to be with it this year. The ball could be right down the middle, but if the catcher was setup outside they called it a ball. I’m just going off this game & a few others, haven’t watched to many live this year unfortunately.

That pitch was dirty.......

it may have been borderline but it some nasty movement on it. Glad we dont have to face him again for a while

by Shoert on May 5, 2010 2:28 PM EDT reply actions

What about that face after Heyward’s first homer? This face was actually a portal, and Chipper’s powers were transferred to Heyward.
