Open Thread 5/31 Overflow #2: Braves hosting Phils

Grandpa's first homer from the LHB, and Yunel Escobar coming through with some RBI followed by some lol-worthy base running . . . Braves up 6-0 on the Phils going into the bottom of the 5th.  First place is up for grabs.

Moving this over from the other thread, since this one opened as I was posting it.

ChopTalk Magazine / Stories about the players as kids.. this was Chipper’s contribution:

"I was 8 yrs old and jsut hit a double and was standing on 2nd base and I had to go…I mean really, really, bad," Jones said. "I just peed right there on 2nd base. I couldn’t help it. I let loose. What are you going to do? It was a nightmare, and I just had to get it over with. I kept leading off innings and getting hits, or we kept having to go out to the field, and I just could not run to the nearest tree." Jones said he got laughed at "forever." His dad told Chipper he should have called timeout.

I don't think preventing the allowance of 3 runs

With a 6 run lead is worth risking blowing out a young star’s arm. I will not be convinced otherwise.

by Bronn on May 31, 2010 3:18 PM EDT up reply actions

And you can't convince me letting him finish the inning would result

in blowing out his arm. It’s not 180 pitches. It’s not back to back to back 100-120+ outings. It’s one damn game.

by Mr. Sanchez on May 31, 2010 3:19 PM EDT up reply actions

There’s always a risk when you’re going upwards of 110 pitches, and it’s higher in younger pitchers who haven’t stretched out their arms as much. I’m not saying it’s a direct result, but it would create a risk.

by Bronn on May 31, 2010 3:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Prove it...

when did 100 pitches become some magical number? As often as Niekro and Spahn and so many others took the hill, his arm ain’t gonna fall off if he throws pitch #121.

by Mr. Sanchez on May 31, 2010 3:21 PM EDT up reply actions

There's been a lot of research done on pitcher abuse at Baseball Prospectus

Between 110 and 120 pitches is a significant cutoff point in future effectiveness. Hanson was close to that point already.

by Bronn on May 31, 2010 3:26 PM EDT up reply actions

the article calls it an assumption...

and relies on fatigue. I can agree on the overall idea, but not the specific number, especially considering differing rates of fatigue.

by Mr. Sanchez on May 31, 2010 3:30 PM EDT up reply actions

it also implies stamina plays a big factor...

so pitch 110 for Hanson would be different from say David Wells or some other fat guy

by Mr. Sanchez on May 31, 2010 3:29 PM EDT up reply actions

It also implies age is a huge factor.

And seriously, we just had a post on this site TODAY about how awesome the bullpen has been. And look, what’s happened? We still have a three run lead despite a worst-case scenario!

by Bronn on May 31, 2010 3:30 PM EDT up reply actions

It also says...

really high pitch counts (120 and up) compared to a 105 or 110-pitch outing.

Really high starts at 120, not 107

by Mr. Sanchez on May 31, 2010 3:31 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m completely fine with 107. You’re the one who wanted him to get “one more out” which might have taken 6-7 pitches. Moylan threw 6 pitches and failed to retire the next hitter. There’s no guarantee that Hanson would have done any better.

by Bronn on May 31, 2010 3:32 PM EDT up reply actions

It's not like he could have done much worse...

and the age thing doesn’t include Tommy, he’s not a kid anymore.

by Mr. Sanchez on May 31, 2010 3:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Listen, last year was the first time he’s ever thrown 150 + innings in a season. We stretched him out to 194 last year. I don’t want to put any more strain on his arm than there already is. I’d rather pull him early and let him get a little more rest in a game like this (even if it’s just a little bit) so we can have him prime shape come playoffs. We’re going to ask him for 200 innings anyway, and we want to be playoff team.

I’m concerned about the player, not 3 runs in a single game that WE’RE WINNING, despite it all. Plus, you seem to think it’s guaranteed that Hanson would have retired the next batter, and he wasn’t. Ruiz had a fairly lucky shot off of Moylan, landing the ball just inside the line. Hanson is not immune to luck, and he didn’t even have his best stuff today. Our bullpen has been generally AWESOME this year, so there was no reason for anyone who’s not second-guessing to assume that we’d give up runs by pulling out our starter at that point.

by Bronn on May 31, 2010 3:39 PM EDT up reply actions

This is incorrect...

“you seem to think it’s guaranteed that Hanson would have retired the next batter, and he wasn’t.”

The only thing I seem to think is guaranteed is that 5-10 more pitches in a single game are automatically going to destroy his arm. That’s it and that is all.

by Mr. Sanchez on May 31, 2010 3:41 PM EDT up reply actions

When you’re close to a crucial mark, I think it’s important to limit wear and tear. That’s a high number. Look, those 3 runs are completely irrelevant. The 5-10 pitches might not have been. “might” is too strong a word for me.

by Bronn on May 31, 2010 3:43 PM EDT up reply actions

What is he a fucking baby?...

You don’t want him going that far every time, but once in a while it ain’t that bad. I mean the guy does throw for a living, I think he can handle it.

by Mr. Sanchez on May 31, 2010 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions

And he'll probably get to do that again...

it’s always a very very humid day in Atlanta. That’s kind of Atlanta weather.

by Mr. Sanchez on May 31, 2010 3:19 PM EDT up reply actions

That he doesn’t throw 115 pitches in a day game at all this year. Thanks

Seriously, when did 100 become some magical number for pitchers...

98, you’re fine. 112, you’re arm is gonna fall off. It’s a grand total of 14 pitches. If they were average numbers maybe, but in a single game people are getting a bit overboard imo.
