Astros - Braves Series Recap
The first and most important aspect of this Houston series, besides breaking the 9-game losing streak and winning three in a row, was how we might look back on this series. This might be when we figured out that this Braves team can win without Chipper Jones, but it can't win without Jason Heyward. In a way, the torch was passed from Chipper to J-Hey this weekend.
Chipper was 0-for-10 with 3 walks in the series. Heyward was 5-for-10 with 2 homeruns, a double, and 6 RBI. Chipper Jones was completely non-existent in this series and we won all three games, and two of them quite decisively. Now Heyward was not the only guy getting hits, but in just about every win his hits or RBIs gave the Braves the lead or keyed a rally that would give the team the lead. This used to be what Chipper Jones was so good at doing.
When the Braves win Chipper hits .222./.391/.444. When they lose he hits .188/.350/.250.
When the Braves win Heyward hits .450/.521/.925. When they lose he hits .098/.260/.244.
That's a stark difference for Heyward, not so much for Chipper. As Heyward goes, so go the Braves.
Here are some more good things from the Braves during the Astros series:
- It's worth repeating that Heyward was 5-for-10 with 6 RBI
- Braves leadoff hitters were 5-for-12, and scored 4 runs
- Troy Glaus was also 5-for-10 with 3 walks and 4 RBI
- Melky Cabrera was 3-for-6 with 2 walks
- The best outing by a starting pitcher was Tommy Hanson, who went 8 dominant innings giving up 2 runs... but Tim Hudson and Derek Lowe only gave up 1 run each in their 6+ and 5 innings of work respectively
- The Braves bullpen pitched 7.1 scoreless innings of relief, walking 3 and striking out 7
The not so good from the Astros series:
- The Braves were only 2-for-5 in stolen base attempts
- As mentioned above, Chipper was 0-for-10 with 3 walks
- Nothing else, really
Obviously this was an exciting series for Braves fans, made so by actually winning games. I knew this Braves team could win, but I was starting to wonder when they would start winning. It is worth saying that we have a chance to collect more of these "wins" when we face the Nationals for three games. Of course, we all should know by now how hard the Nats play the Braves, as if the last four games of last year are any reminder.

Can we please play Houston 15 more times?
When you've said Jason Heyward, you've said it all.........
I should also point out that the Braves made up 1.5 games in the NL East standings due to the sweep. That’s a good thing.

J-Hey Mania
Seriously, it is a long season and Heyward is not going to average 2 RBI per game the rest of the way. The Braves will need Heap, Chipper, Glaus Man, Daiz and others to make very big contributions in order to be a winning and contending team. The Braves will also need the starting pitchers to be somewhere damn near consistently dominating.
Don’t get me wrong: Heyward needs to keep on raking and hopefully run away with the ROY.
But there is NO WAY he carries the team into the WS without one helluva lot of major help along the way.
Damned to Hell
straightaway (with no appeal) for blasphemy, reviling, and (possibly worst of all) scurrility.
Or perhaps I should first be burned at the stake?
Have you seen the movie Seven?
We’re going to chain you to a bed and let you waste away for a year.
"My God! Good news fans, the Braves are showing signs of life for the first time in weeks. As a matter of fact, they appear to be beating the crap out of each other."
Glaus did contribute! Don’t make me yell at you!

Now we just need to contiue this through the Gnatspos series and especially keep the ball rolling into Philly.
We’re 3.5 back, and I don’t think the Phils will take all 3 from St. Louis. That means that we can make a play for first during the Phils series! I’m going to the game on Saturday too!! Go Braves!

Someone in fantasy
Just offered me Nyjer Morgan and Johan Santana for Kelly Johnson and Jason Heyward.
Seriously.
I literally fell over laughing at that. Somebody thinks you’re an imbecile.
When you've said Jason Heyward, you've said it all.........
or sometimes is just trying to open a discussion...
i’ll often make an offer that is somewhat lopsided usually with a note indicating you may not like this, but a counter offer is always appreciated. You never know how much the other side a) values their own, and b) values yours. Plus, it’s not like they’re gonna offer something lopsided in the other direction unless they’re the imbecile, and sometimes you can get burned on an outstanding proposal that you forget about, an injury happens and wham they just unloaded a problem for a huge return and you’re screwed (has happened to me before).
Like you and I. I thought we had some good trade dialogue that ended up not working out, but I don’t think anyone was offended.

I had already offered Kelly Johnson for Alex Rios
And it was shot down down. This was in response to that.
He’s obviously not paying attention to my team. I could some more steals, but I’m not trading 16 HRs to date for 6 steals. And he was clearly just offering out of his surprlus, since he has Bucholz, Felix Hernandez, and David Price, and I don’t particularly need to upgrade my pitching.
It was an instance of him trying to steal two of my most valuable trade commodities for the dregs of his roster. It’s a bit insulting that I can’t find anyone who wants to make a serious offer on KJ, though.
Ha, sounds like this one kid in my league.

Please God don't let Heyward get injured.
Also, thus far this season, it doesn’t look like we have a weakest link in our division. We are gonna need to play our best, and continue to put up W’s to compete.
Go Braves, keep this winning streak going!
He doesn't neccesarily want to hurt himself...
…but He did find out that yes, He can make a mountain that not even He can move.

But can He inflict an injury that even He can not heal?

Don't mean to be a downer...
But nothing really changed for me in this series. Yeah, we can hit bad pitching… great… Not really getting my hopes up after sweeping the astros…
4/4/10
The Braves will win 90 games this year.

Last year the braves were terrible against terrible teams....and were terrible at home (40-41).
PROGRESS!

I want momentum. We sweep the astros and the gnats and go into philly with a win streak and a chance for first.
Then we’ll figure out how we really are!

i agree
sweeping shit teams doesn’t really do it for me. I’ll be a lot less worried and a lot more excited if they take 2/3 against the phillies this weekend

One thing I noticed, I don’t think 2 for 5 on SB’s is all that bad, I can’t remember the last time we even attempted 5 steals in a series.
