GBraves vs. Pawtucket 5/1/10 - Two Walk Offs (Told in Pictures)
Yes, you read it right up there. The Gwinnett Braves walked off TWICE in one game...albeit the first one that was overturned was more dramatic than the final game winner. Anyway, on to the game!
Ryne Reynoso started the game. My wife and I entered Coolray Field just as the first pitch was being thrown out. By the time we bought our tickets and got to our seats 3 rows behind the Braves dugout the score was already 4-0. I'm not sure what happened, but Ryne pitched a lot out of the stretch like this with base runners behind him in the first inning.
His pitching performance warranted Botelho to come out and give him a stern talking to. As Rex Hudler says in MLB10 The Show "Stop laying it in there MEAT!"
Eventually Reynoso settled down a bit (even though he threw 2 pitches to the backstop over JC Boscans head) and stopped giving up hits like this to the PawSox.
He also received a great defensive play from Joe Thurston on an over the shoulder catch heading out into shallow RF that saved a run. Here is Joe popping up from his sliding catch to fire the ball back into the catcher to keep the runner at 3rd.
Finally the top of the 1st was over, but the Braves were down 4-0 right out of the gates. Matt Young got the Braves offense started (after receiving a little chin music)
He whacked a solid hit and ended up going 4-5 and was a catalyst at the top of the order. I really like his line drive hits and his speed...way better than Gregor.
Freddie Freeman (DHing for this game) hits a rocket right here, but right at the first baseman who stepped on first to easily double off Wes Timmons. Freddie was upset that he hit the ball so hard but right to the guy. Those are the breaks.
Mitch Jones hit a solo HR in this game. This was the swing even though it doesn't look like the much, the ball cleared the LC wall easily.
Brent Clevlen has been consistent this year, hitting over .300.
Matt Young steals 3rd successfully after hitting a double.
Wes Timmons had some good pitches to hit as Matt Young was always on base in front of him. Here he drives Young home from 3rd with a deep fly ball to LF
Ryne Reynoso was finally lifted in the 5th after 4.2 innings and with Runners on base. Although he did not give up another run after that 4 run first inning.
Jeff Lyman relieved him and promptly gave up 2 runs in his 1 inning.
This was another over the shoulder catch, this time by Wes Timmons. The shot before this actually showed the catch, but the damn focus took too long and the shot was blurry.
Catcher JC Boscan
Jeff Lyman was relieved for Mariano Gomez (the tall lanky lefty)
Gomez pitched pretty good and didn't give up any runs, but got some help from his defense as Boscan tags out this runner trying to score.
Brandon Hicks, flashing the leather.
A guy I had never seen before, Christhian Martinez relieved Gomez and pitched 2 scoreless inning and ended up picking up the win.
Here's the token Barbaro Canizares shot for the game...they almost doubled this guy off of first, but he sneaked his foot back on the bag to be called safe.
And now to the 9th inning. Gregor Blanco pinch hits for Boscan to start the inning off...and promptly hits a slow roller to the first baseman for the first out. This would be the last out that PawSox got on the night though. The Braves were down 6-4 going into the bottom of the 9th.
Matt Young picks him up though with his 4th hit of the game.
Then uses his speed to steal 2nd and get into scoring position.
Wes Timmons then deposits one into LF to score Young and make it 6-5.
After a quick meeting on the mound to discuss how to pitch to Freeman...
Freeman gets his first and only hit through the whole into RF...Wes hustles into 3rd.
Barbaro comes through with a knock scoring Wes to tie the game.
And also allows Freeman to bust ass around the bases into 3rd.
Next, Mitch Jones deposits one over the left field foul pole for what appears to be a 3 run homer.
The PawSox manager argues while telling his players to stay on the field and away from the argument.
Meanwhile the Braves take this opportunity to celebrate the apparent walk off
The umpires huddle and discuss
Finally overturning the call and saying the ball was foul.
Now Manager Dave Brundage wants an explanation, and it appears the Ump just blew this call.
So the players re-take the field...and the PawSox closer was a bit rocked I think after all of the commotion as he immediately walks Mitch Jones to load the bases. Next up Brent Clevlen. He promptly draws a walk with this being ball 4 to score the winning run.
JC Holt (pinch running for Freeman at 3rd) scores and the Braves win 7-6 in the best walk off way possible...with a bases loaded walk! :-)
Matt Young tops it off with a chest bump on Clevlen...at least we go home a winner!
Here are a few shots of some ladies at the game for you guys.

Great job!
I still need to get up to Gwinnett to see me a game, although it seems ya’ll used all the magic with the 2 walk offs. I’d probably end up seeing a 10-2 loss.

I feel like I was there… Great stuff man, your pictures are freaking awesome. Freddie stung some ball that night, but right at guys.

That’s probably because you were there CB…which reminds me, where did you sit? I saw the video and it was from behind the net…I can’t stand to sit back there as the net messes with the focus on my camera. It makes me vulnerable to foul balls, but that’s why I have my wife there to warn me. :-)
Yeah, Freddie had some tough luck that night with the balls put in play…but at least he’s not striking out too much (he has less K’s than Heyward so far this year, even though he’s a league lower).
Thanks for the kind words. Some guy actually asked me if he could buy some of my shots that I was taking for his personal collection, but unfortunately I can’t sell the pictures since I’m not officially shooting for MiLB.
Yeah, people never understand that about the pics. I take a lot of shots for my college’s team and a mom of one of the players was telling me I should sell them to the parents and I’m like, “Yeah, pretty sure the school would find out and sue me.”
Our seats were actually in 100 behind the net, but I moved when I was taking pictures. I got right behind the early to get some shots of Ryne and a few around the infield, but that’s all I really took that night cause I wanted to hang with gondeee and royhobbs. I can’t take sweet action shots at night like you can so once it gets dark all I can really get are ones where the guys are basically still, and I had plenty of those already.

Well if you can get close enough to the net (like sitting right down on the front row behind the catcher) then the net is not a factor. However, when you’re further back the net is just a nuisance.
The action shots at night are attributed to the type of camera I have and the big heavy lens I tote around…that’s the only way it’s possible for me to get them…unfortunately.
Yeah, one day I’ll get the big cool lenses. One day. Yep, right up on the net. That park looks like they wouldn’t let you move around anywhere, especially behind home, but all the ushers were super nice about it.

Possible solution, ala ebay and ticket scalping...
why don’t you sell them this lovely, 10 cent plastic bic pen for the low low price of say, $5. And free with their purchase of said 10 cent pen (or other relatively low priced item), they get these lovely pictures.
Yeah, I love that method. Frankly, my pics aren’t good enough that anyone should be paying more them, especially some college players’ parents.

Really enjoyed these
Thanks for sharing. These are fantastic photos and I enjoyed them a lot. Love the ones of the umpires conferring…couldn’t get a shot of those thanks to Chopper’s gianormous self standing in front of me beating on a trashcan lid……(after a really nice usher let me move so I could actually take some pics where the players didn’t look like dots on the field……). Still an awesome game!!!
Who, you mean this big groundhog fella? ;-)

Hopefully you weren’t sitting down there when him and the big guy were dancing on the dugout and ripped their shirts off. hehe
I love that he has a soul patch. So ridiculous.

bahahaha!!!
no we were in our actual seats….but that was way funny and I did take a picture of it….couldn’t help myself…..will share later when I get home.
I gotta ask
His name is Chopper, he has a little goatee on his chin like Chipper, is there some correlation to this or am I crazy?

Ya, me too. :)
Seriously, I wish I had a gift for words, so I could properly describe how captivating your photos are. I keep coming back to look at them, especially the ones of Freddie coming into 3rd, Matt Young getting buzzed, Thurston hovering in mid-air…
Heh, I was using Lightroom 3 beta to edit my RAW shots, and it ended this weekend. I didn’t really realize the huge difference between RAW and jpg until earlier this month when I took shots in both at a game and compared them afterwards. I had no idea I’d miss LR so much! But still no match to the clarity in your shots, for sure. I’m gonna look for a replacement or just buy it, got 400 pics from Saturday’s game I can’t even look at, and a small courthouse wedding to shoot Friday. Of course it could just be my crappy laptop screen!
Seeing the ball is something I'm not sure I see in others...
it seems so clear either off the bat, or about to cross the plate (I can’t really tell). It keeps getting said, but you can’t say it enough, these are some amazing shots Dave D. Just amazing, and whoever decided to not have you on staff for the team was missing something. Either the other guy is Walter Ioss Jr, or they made a mistake.
Thanks Liz. Actually, I don’t shoot RAW anymore as the files are bigger and it just takes me too damn long to process. Now I just shoot JPG and try to get the settings right in the camera so I don’t have to do any post processing. These shots have very little done to them in post except maybe a slight levels adjustment, some sharpening and then cropping. That’s it…and it makes the work flow much faster.
These are great Dave
my only suggestion/request is this:
Please use the “page jump” thing while constructing the post. I use my mobile phone to check on the blog during the day and it takes a long time for my phone to download alllll of these (beautiful) pictures.
Maybe next time do something similar to this:
“Yes, you read it right up there. The Gwinnett Braves walked off TWICE in one game…albeit the first one that was overturned was more dramatic than the final game winner. Anyway, on to the game!

**PAGE BREAK
And then the pictures.
Think you could do that for me in the future? I appreciate it.
And rec’d, BTW.

I need a new one. This is pretty much my computer now
I don’t know how it’s still alive. I should get a new one within the next few weeks/months though

My apologies. I actually did try to put some stuff after the page break line, but for some reason it wouldn’t let me put my cursor down there. I"ll try it next time.
thank you sir!
