Braves Quote For The Day... Minor League Pitching Depth

From Kevin Goldstein at Baseball Prospectus... sit back, open a Friday beer, and enjoy this comment:

[Randall Delgado] is ranked below top prospects Julio Teheran and Arodys Vizcaino, but it almost makes him forgotten about when in most organizations, he'd be number one. The 20-year-old has a loose arm with projection left in him, mid-90s heat with control and sink, and he's dominating the Carolina League, with a sub-one WHIP and more than a strikeout per inning. The Panamanian's ceiling is at least a two, and while many teams don't have a single pitching prospect with a ceiling higher than a three, the Braves have a trio of them.

And I bet most Talking Chop regulars could list another dozen minor league arms with excellent upside. These kids are going to be exciting to watch develop in the coming years (assuming we don't trade them away). By the way, the awesome praise from KG continues:

After cruising through the Sally League with a 1.14 ERA in seven starts while limiting the league to a .168 batting average, [Julio Teheran] moved up to the Carolina League [Wednesday] night, striking out 12 of the 26 batters he faced. A true potential ace, Teheran's 93-97 mph fastball is enough to dominate on its own, but it's rare to find a teenager with an advanced changeup, and Teheran's breaking ball has also made progress this year. It's not ridiculous to think he could be in the big leagues before he turns 21, that is to say before opening day 2012.

Ahhh...

who cares (although we have plenty of options with Medlen, JJ, Vizcaino, among several others)

Our potential 2015 rotation looks mighty nice (and relatively cheap, ala the Rays now).

I think having Boras as his agent pretty much decided JJ’s fate after those arbitration years are over. It’s unfortunate but most likely the case.

That’s why we need to sell as high as we can on him, IMO.

Ideally, that would have been this past offseason. We could have kept Vaz and had someone productive in LF, in theory.

Plus it frees up a lot of money to spend on a few choice players/ free agents.

Yeah, I was just thinking during lunch about how spot on some of these signings have been. For the most part it’s first come first serve with these international kids, right?

Mike Minor was a wasted pick. He is nothing but a fringe prospect who was only picked due to his signability.

Last year in ST this lady who was trying to get autographs from the Major League Braves, and not having much luck, scoffed at my buddy and I when we said we were going back to the Minor League fields. She derisively said, “Good luck with those Minor Leaguers.” Yeah, thanks. This is why the Minors are awesome, because you get to know a guy and see him play before everyone else knows about him. I love the love of the Minors here on TC.

like I said in my "thank you" post

the minor league coverage on TC is better than not just any other Braves blog, but better than every other baseball blog (that I’ve seen, anyways.) That’s what originally got me hooked on this site.

Agreed.

Before I was a regular around here, I only knew of our top guys – the Hansons, Heywards and Francoeurs.

Now, I feel like I could almost name the rosters of nearly every level in the organization, and give some stats for most of them.

The ML love around here is fantastic, and only helps to make us even more educated about the team that we all so passionately love.

If we can keep some of these quality arms and we actually give them a shot to pitch (aka, dump Lowe and KK) and get them up there so Hudson and Hanson can mentor them, they’re going to be kick ass.

If Julio Teheran already has filthy stuff, what else does he need to develop before the team calls him up to the show? Why not have him up in 2011 if he performs well in ST?

by romone_braves91 on May 21, 2010 3:55 PM EDT reply actions

It’s doubtful his command is quite ready for much more advanced hitters. Plus, I’m sure his workload will be watched very carefully so a full big league season probably wouldn’t work. I don’t disagree with your theory but while his stuff is sick, he still needs some development time and we’ve got enough guys ahead of him that there is no need to rush him.

The talent level between High-A and the Majors is just a little different.

The scary thing is, at least for some guys, the talent level isn’t really all that different, it’s just the consistency that’s way off.
