Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 5/20

Gwinnett 2, Columbus 3

Matt Young, playing second base tonight, paced the G-Braves with a 3 hit night. The little guy is now 9 for his last 13 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI in that span. People questioned Freddie Freeman's power after he only hit 8 home runs last season, but he's already collected 5 this season. Still, I maintain that he's a doubles hitter who manages to line a few out of the park. Of course, he's also a monster of a human and could develop 40 HR power. Chris Resop is possibly having the best season of his extensive career. Also, second baseman JC Holt has been released by the Braves and has signed with the Oakland Athletics.

Mississippi 4, Huntsville 5

Richard Sullivan started the game, but exited after facing just 4 batters. He was a little wild, walking 2 of the 4 he faced, but I have to believe he must have been injured. Ryne Reynoso came in for him and it was fortunate that he had been stretched out from his time starting for Gwinnett. He struck out 8 in his 5.2 innings of work, but was also saddled with the loss. Randy Gress continues to surprise, albeit still in somewhat limited playing time. But, for a guy who some TCers made into a running joke he's certainly showing more than many thought he was capable of.

Myrtle Beach 3, Winston-Salem 1

Cole Miles managed to get on base 3 times and he even threw out a runner attempting to turn a single into a double. And frankly, I find it surprising he could throw anyone out from the outfield, so good for him for making me look foolish. More importantly, the little guy is 6 for his last 14 with 5 walks in that span. Brett Oberholtzer had his best start yet for the Pelicans, striking out a batter per inning and only giving up one run on a homer to Justin Greene (who is almost 4 years older than him).

Rome 2, Hickory 3

Cory Harrilchak had an eventful day, collecting 2 hits, including a double, stealing a base, making a throwing error, and throwing a runner out at home. That's one way to fill up the box score. Cory Rasmus continues his solid work, despite picking up the loss. He gave up too many hits, but he didn't walk anyone and manged to let just one run cross the plate. When the Braves drafted him several years ago they thought they had a top arm on their hands; it's good to see that he's worked hard and come back strong from his arm injuries.
