Around SBN: Celtics Seething Over Embarrassing Loss

Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 5/19

Ty'Relle Harris fanned 7 in a career high 4 innings while keeping Winston-Salem off the scoreboard.

Columbus 12, Gwinnett 9

  • F. Freeman 3-5, 2 DB, 3 RBI, .277 AVG
  • B. Canizares 2-5, RBI, .294 AVG
  • W. Timmons 2-5, DB, 2 RBI, .281 AVG
  • M. Young 4-5, DB, HR (2), 2 RBI, SB (8), .240 AVG
  • T. Gustafson 4.2 IP, 7 ER, 8 H, 4 BB, 2 K, 5.90 ERA
  • Matt Young had a great day, hitting a double, a homer, and stealing a base. It was the 19th homer of his career, so he's one shy of a big milestone. Freddie Freeman continues his impressive season and has proven the Braves right for having the confidence to start him in AAA. Tim Gustafson has another poor start, in fact, the only really good performance he's had all year was his last game, where he pitched 6 scoreless relief innings. You have to wonder how much longer it will be until one of Mississippi's dominant lefties, Mike Minor and Scott Diamond, takes his spot in the rotation.

    Mississippi 6, West Tennessee 5

  • D. Linares 2-5, HR (6), 2 RBI, .257 AVG
  • O. Mercado 2-2, 3 BB, .267 AVG
  • J. Gonzalez 2-5, 2 RBI, .188 AVG
  • R. Gress 1-2, HR (2), RBI, 2 BB, .239 AVG
  • E. Cordier 6 IP, 4 ER, 6 H, 4 BB, 7 K, 4.14 ERA
  • B. Beachy 2 IP, 0 ER, 3 H, 1 K, 1.16 ERA
  • After Mauro Gomez, walk, Cody Johnson, single, and Orlando Mercado, walk, loaded the bases, Juan Gonzalez, no, not that Juan Gonzalez, hit a walk-off single for the M-Braves win. Brandon Beachy continues his outstanding work, throwing 2 scoreless innings. Lefty Lee Hyde got the blown save for giving up an unearned run, caused by an error by Gonzalez, but also picked up the save when Gonzalez hit his walk-off.

    Myrtle Beach 5, Winston-Salem 0, game 1

  • G. Rodriguez 2-4, DB, RBI, .247 AVG
  • G. Avila 2-4, HR (7), 2 RBI, .272 AVG
  • S. Sime 2-4, DB, .304 AVG
  • R. Delgado 7 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 5 K, W (2), 2.58 ERA
  • Randall Delgado has been on a roll, after blanking the Dash tonight for 7 frames, he's now given up just 4 earned runs in his last 23.2 innings, good for a 1.52 ERA in that span, along with a 0.93 WHIP. He's really making a name for himself, and my guess is the national prospect media will take notice come this off-season.

    Myrtle Beach 3, Winston-Salem 4, 20 innings, game 2

  • J. Teheran 7 IP, 1 ER, 4 H, 2 BB, 12 K, 1.29 ERA
  • P. Clemens 4 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 5 K, 5.40 ERA
  • T. Harris 4 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 3 BB, 7 K, 3.00 ERA
  • How do you finish off a double header? Well, you play 20 innings in the second game of course. Even with the extra, extra innings, the offense couldn't do much, collecting just 11 hits. How often does that statement make sense. Mike Daniel had a very rough night, going hit-less in 9 at bats. Julio Teheran made his Carolina League debut and was as masterful as he had been in the Sally League, fanning an astounding 12 in 7 innings, allowing just 1 run on a home run to Kyle Shelton, who's nearly 5 years older than the right hander. A pair of other players who started the year with Rome, Paul Clemens and Ty'Relle Harris, were equally impressive, combining to shut down the Dash for 8 innings while striking out 12 of their own. On the night, the Pelicans struck out 29. With all the impressive pitching it's hard to believe they lost.

    Rome 12, Charleston 5

  • J. Kreke 3-5, RBI, .260 AVG
  • R. Hefflinger 3-5, 2 DB, 3 RBI, .314 AVG
  • B. Schlehuber 2-4, .226 AVG
  • J. Hanson 4-5, 2 DB, 3 RBI, .667 AVG
  • C. Bethancourt 3-5, DB, RBI, .235 AVG
  • J. Whitmer 2-5, DB, .444 AVG
  • B. DeVall 5 IP, 5 R, 3 ER, 11 H, 1 K, 6.00
  • D. Hale 4 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 4 K, SV (1), 6.83 ERA
  • This is the kind of output we all thought this prospect laden team would be capable of from the start of the season. Robby Hefflinger spends more time at second base than some second basemen. Jake Hanson is less impressive as a prospect now that he doesn't play third base, but his 6 hits in his 2 games with Rome, including 3 doubles, are very impressive. David Hale has his best performance of the season, and I don't think it's a coincidence that it came in relief. (Note: when I had Hale pitching 2 innings of relief in Monday's game, I was unintentionally wrong. It was actually Tom Berryhill, who milb.com must think is Hale.)

I hate to make this about the big league club, but I find it interesting that sometimes it seems like our teenager gold arms in A-ball are on a longer leash in starts than our thirty something vets like Huddy, Lowe and tonight Kawakami. 79 pitches… And he couldn’t get Kimbrel in the game either? Cmon.

    KK was hurt

Plus, the big league club is in the business of winning games, not developing pitchers. Big difference.

    A typo

In the sentence about Hyde. I’ll let you correct it before many see it.

Teheran just keeps impressing. Think he’ll climb into the BaseballAmerica top 10 prospects by mid season? He’s just rocking the lower levels this year with huge K rates and small walk rates. He started out at #51, I think.

Also, what did Schafer do? It should be a rule to give daily updates on him, just like we were basically doing with Heyward when he got last year.

Schafer: 1-4, BB, K and a OF assist at 3rd

I think him and Delgado both have to be rocking the charts. Delgado faced just 23 today to get through 7, dude is owning the Carolina League and he was like the third youngest player there to start the year, IIRC.

So, does DB=2B, or have I missed a new kind of hit they’ve invented down there?

by J-Freak on May 20, 2010 3:11 AM EDT reply actions

    It was addressed yesterday...

    DB=2B because 2 2B might get confusing.

by Mr. Sanchez on May 20, 2010 6:09 AM EDT up reply actions

Apparently it would be less confusing, if two separate people have asked

We put HR instead of 4B and nobody is confused.

I think DB has already proven more confusing than 2 2B. The common usage shouldn’t be confusing to anyone if they are used to reading batting lines.

If you’re going to get confused, then put it like this (2) 2B.

I think DB is kind of stupid myself…we don’t put TB for Triple, we put 3B. What if someone had 3 triples in a game, you think they’re going to get confused with 3 3B?

by Dave_D on May 20, 2010 9:12 AM EDT up reply actions

I’d been putting TR for triple, but whatever. If everyone is so confused I’ll go with the numbers.

    Rome

Good to see the bats coming alive, Bethancourt is starting to hit again, Hanson has been a doubles machine in his first two games (I wonder why they moved him from 3B?), Hefflinger has been swinging a hot bat and Hale look much better coming out of the pen. Only thing missing from the game was a Kyle Rose CS special lol!

    Check his defensive #s....

a whole lot of errors and a fp under .800. I know that might prompt advanced stat nuts to say Errors, FP FTW, but when the numbers are that bad, it ain’t good.

by Mr. Sanchez on May 20, 2010 6:10 AM EDT up reply actions

Those numbers aren’t good but most teenagers make a lot of errors. He’s got the potential to be an excellent defender.

Is that where he was moved? Based on the talent depth we have at 3B (none), I feel like they might as well leave him at third and hope he becomes at least tolerable there.

I would have thought so too, but, at least to me, this is one of those cases that explains why they get paid the big bucks to run a team and I get paid nothing to write on a blog. I just have to assume they know better than me.

Medlen has more of a chance of being in the future rotation that Minor, Vizcaino, or even Teheran. He’s already doing a damn good job now, and he’s got future #3 potential in my eyes. I wouldn’t mind him being one of the future 5 at all.
