Atlanta Braves April Aftermath: MVPs and LVPs
Like we did last year we will present the hitting and pitching MVPs and LVPs for each month this season, beginning with the first forgettable month.
Hitting MVP: This is an easy one. Just about the only guy hitting on this team is Martin Prado. Our terrific second baseman is second in the league in hitting, fifth in on-base percentage, and in the top-20 in OPS. As good as our old second baseman Kelly Johnson is doing in Arizona, Prado is handling his first opening day starting assignment as good as we could have hoped. Jason Heyward gets a nod here in the MVP category. His key hits have been vital to the Braves winning the games they have won, and right now he's just about the only Braves batter contributing power to the lineup.
Hitting LVP: Wow. Who to choose for this one. You could just about throw a dart at the Braves lineup card and whomever it landed on could be the hitting LVP. Troy Glaus has been nothing the Braves expected him to be, but even with a .200/.300/.300 slash line, there are others who have been far worse. Yunel Escobar, while showing signs of turning it around in the last few games, has not been his normal consistent self. Chipper Jones and Brian McCann are not hitting up to their standards or the standards the fans set for them. Both Melky Cabrera and Nate McLouth have been less than worthless at the plate, but the prize goes to Matt Diaz. While this may be tough for some to take, Matt has been extra worthless in the batters box. Right now he has virtually no redeeming offensive traits. He is last on the team in on-base percentage at a pitiful .239 due to his complete inability to take a walk. Even against left-handed pitchers he's only hitting .227. Of his 9 hits, one-third of them came in one game.
Pitching MVP: There are not too many contenders for this one. Just about everyone in the bullpen pitched well, but no one was dominant. It's hard to believe that we only have 1 save from our closer. Tim Hudson has done a good job so far this season, but he's been out-pitched by Tommy Hanson, who gets the April pitching MVP. Tommy hasn't gone too deep into games, save for the last game of the month, but he has given the team a chance to win every time out by limiting opponents to just 2 runs in each of his 5 starts. He's also striking out more than a batter per inning. One thing is for sure, Hanson and Hudson have been the saviors of this staff so far this season.
Pitching LVP: There are several contenders for the LVP and they're all in the starting rotation. Derek Lowe's ERA is certainly high enough to warrant this award, and his WHIP is the highest on the team. But Lowe has 3 wins, and no matter how he came by them that's more than the rest of the Braves starters combined. Kenshin Kawakami is leading the league in losses, but most of that is not his fault. Yes, he has an atrocious 5.48 ERA, but the team has scored a grand total of 5 runs in his 4 starts, including 2 shutouts. He runs a very close second to this month's pitching LVP, Jair Jurrjens. JJ had one really bad game and he had to leave because of injury in his last start of the month. He did make three other fairly decent starts, but the short inning appearances have really put a strain on the bullpen and given Braves fans great concern about the health of Jurrjens. There's also worry that he is regressing from his last two stellar years.

Really JJ over Lowe? Lowe’s wins are worth nothing. He had what one or two decent starts? JJ had one breakdown and an injury. That hardly qualifies as LVP
JJ, KK AND Lowe all could’ve been our LVP.

I understand your argument, but JJ has used up the pen more than anybody, now Medlen is not really available from the pen, and JJ is 0-3 with a 6.38 ERA. Reyes would have been a good choice, one horrible outing then a DL
Heyward is pretty good
I don’t like handing out awards with injuries in mind. WL shouldn’t be part of the thing. He had some great performances, and two bad ones. You were nervous before today’s game with lowe right? you were? would you be nervous if JJ was on the mound? i doubt it.

No, I wasn’t nervous about Lowe, I watched his last start and thought he looked really good, like a younger Lowe. I can understand that some would be nervous about him, he has been pretty disappointing pretty often. I’m a Lowe fan. I was happy watching him pitch today, getting groundouts to end innings with runners on 3rd. That’s vintage Derek Lowe. As I said in my original reply, I understand your argument. But while every starting pitcher we have has had some good outings, for whatever reason, none have required as many bullpen innings as JJ as I remember it.
Heyward is pretty good
Just a quick correction
Heyward has 7 homeruns, and 20 RBI, not counting the one he just drove in
yesterday was may 1st

As of May 1st
He had 6 homeruns, so I do stand corrected. If these stats are pertaining to the month of April, the correct line would be 6 homeruns, and 19 RBI.
Those are some serious pics.

Running out of patience with KK
ERA is swollen….the guy rarely pitches into the 5th inning…and seems to throw a shit-ton of pitches in the process. He the most boring pitcher to watch. We’ve won 3 in a row – i don’t see it reaching 4 should this man pitch the opening game of the Nats series. I simply have no faith in the guy. (as i await the posts about last year’s miracle in Atlanta against Halladay and the Blue Jays)

Huh?
He’s only failed to pitch into the 5th inning once in his entire mlb career: 6/24 of last season. It’s true that he hasn’t been as solid this year as he was last season, but he’s only started a handful of games thus far. And his most recent start was his only truly bad outing. He’s a solid 5th starter.
And even that
Wasn’t his fault, because he took a comebacker to the throat, and had to be lifted. He sat the Yankees down pretty easily up until that moment.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
Had a perfect game going, IIRC.

RE: LVP Hitter
I disagree.
Cabrera: 88 PA, .231 wOBA, -6.7 wRAA
Escobar: 89 PA, .268 wOBA, -4.3 wRAA
Diaz: 49 PA, .226 wOBA, -4.1 wRAA

How can anyone not name JoJo Reyes as our LVP?

And he was the least valuable pitcher based on just that one performance. How bad was he? So bad that he was booted off the 25 man.

I liken Jo Jo seemingly being off the team to the Greg Norton departure.
I believe they are counterparts in my hatred. So bad.
So? Did he pitch so bad that he cost us a win? Nope.

Did anyone pitch worse?

You mean, like actually impact a game negatively?...
yeah.
And it’s not who had the ugliest stat line. It’s least VALUABLE. Others had worse VALUE, in that their performances might have actually been a primary reason for a L. Jojo on the other hand, that game was lost whether he comes in or not.
I’m not trying to make this into a debate or anything, but how could someone possibly have more negative value than someone who was for all intents and purposes, cut?
I get that JoJo did not effect the outcomes of the games – that is because he was not good enough to actually PUT into the games. Someone who you cannot use is infinitely less valuable than someone you trust who fails occasionally.
