Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 5/15

Lehigh Valley 1, Gwinnett 4

  • J. Schafer 1-4 K, .250 Avg
  • W. Timmons 2-3 RBI, BB, SB(7), CS(2), .286 Avg
  • F. Freeman 2-4 3B, .275 Avg
  • C. Resop 7IP 1H 0R 1BB 8K 1.90 ERA

Chris Resop came out and pitched his most dominant start of the season allowing just baserunners in 7 innings. I wonder what the Braves plan to do with Resop dominating like he is. You would think if another starter goes down they would have to take a long hard look at Resop. Meanwhile, Freddie Freeman busted out of his mini slump with his second triple of the season. I'd rather see him hit homers but triples are always fun.

West Tennessee 8, Mississippi 7

  • A. Romero 1-4 2B, RBI, BB, .285 Avg
  • M. Gomez 4-5 2B, 2 RBI,  .244 Avg
  • C. Johnson 103 HR(10), 3 RBI, 2BB, 2K, .263 Avg

Cody Johnson homered in the 8th time for the third straight game and the Braves added another 3 runs in the 9th but it was too little too late after Richard Sullivan dug an early hole and the offense couldn't dig all the way out of it. Johnson now has 6 HR in May and has an OPS over 1.100 since the month started and he currently ranks third in the league in HR and RBI. Cody is starting to make the case that he is truly a unique player who may not fit into any previous paradigms. Also for those of you who love rate stats here are Cody's BB and K %'s for the first two months: April - 3.9% BB & 44.3% K; May - 12.2% BB & 28.6% . (These are not updated as of tonight).

Salem 9, Myrtle Beach 1

  • G. Rodriguez 2-4 2B, K, .254 Avg
  • M. Kennelly 1-4 2B, RBI, .239 Avg

Myrtle Beach was didn't have a hitter reach base until the 8th inning when Gerardo Rodriguez and Matt Kennelly hit back to back doubles to lead of the inning and score the only run of the game for the Pelicans. This offense is pretty terrible and a lot of nights the pitching staff isn't much help. Brett Oberholtzer has been getting shelled in the Carolina league so far with opponents hitting .385 against him in his first 5 games. He needs to make some serious adjustments if he plans on sticking.

Rome 0, Savannah 3

  • K. Rose 1-3 BB, CS(15), .301 Avg
  • C. Rasmus 6IP 6H 3R 2BB 4K 2.42 ERA

Cory Rasmus continues to be a big surprise for me, even if this wasn't one of his better starts. He generated a lot of groundballs tonights (11 vs 3 FB) and easily pitched well enough to win this ballgame. Unfortunately the Braves organization is plagued with a disease that saps all offensive ability of anyone that picks up a bat.

I love three 3 things in life: Family, Money, and Baseball. Come March the order of those three get changed up a bit.

Goodness....15CS for Rose?

That’s horrible. Does he wait for the catcher to catch the ball or something? And why doesn’t the team talk to him about this?

I don’t get it. He was good at it last year. WTF happened to him? And they say speed never slumps.

So Cody had 103 homers tonight? Cool. Good that he’s walking more.

I think quite a few have been pick offs...

so maybe it’s a problem learning moves, getting too big a lead, or straying to far from the bag so Cs can nab him.

nice to see them using Schafer in the lead-off spot.

Man, I just hope Cody keeps proving my faith in him worthwhile. That’s an insanely dramatic shift in those rate stats from one month to the next. If he kept those numbers over a long haul(which probably isn’t likely), with his power, he’d be amazing.

I’m still praying for the 3-4-5 of Heyward, CJ and Freeman.

im not

only for a team to bring in the next Billy Wagner?

We really need a RH Bat. I wonder if Salcedo can develop into a RH power kind of guy. Shift him to 3B and make him lift weights and see what happens lol

if our 3-4-5

is Heyward, CJ and Freeman and they all reach their potential, there won’t be many opportunities for teams to bring their “next Billy Wagner” closer in against us.

even if they all reach their potential

that doesnt mean that we will never have a close game or a time where a SP is out of the game and the middle of our lineup is coming to bat

by drumzalicious on May 16, 2010 2:00 AM EDT up reply actions

that would be crazy

For the first month, at 21, in AA...

you expected his rates to be bad, but that was pretty crazy. But if the May #s are what we can expect going forward, Cody’s gonna be climbing up a lot of prospect charts very fast.

Glad to see Schafer batting lead off and getting at least a hit…hope he continues the progression. I don’t care to see Gregor in RF though…I’d rather they have Matt Young playing out there.

You know, it’s funny, because early in his career Gregor played almost all RF. He used to have a cannon for an arm, but at some point that just evaporated. I’ve never understood how guys can just lose arm strength like that.

Resop has been great thus far. With pitiching depth like this, we can probably land a decent bat along the way. We can use it.
