doesn’t he get more money THIS season?

Cockchafer

by bpk228480 on May 12, 2010 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes

The vesting option for Saito has to do with the same thing, though, but that’s how the bonuses are figured into Wags’ deal. FW thinks they’re a sure thing to be exercised, but won’t disclose how much they’re worth.

by Bronn on May 12, 2010 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions

From cot's...

1 year/$7M (2010), plus 2011 option

signed by Atlanta as a free agent 12/2/09
10:$6.75M, 11: $6.5M club option ($0.25M buyout)
2011 option guaranteed with 50 games finished in 2010

That’s Wagner.

Saito is…
1 year/$3.2M (2010)

signed by Atlanta as a free agent 12/3/09
performance bonuses:
$0.5M based on appearances
$1.8M based on games finished

So only Wags has a vesting option. Saito is a strictly one year deal, although we can still offer him arbitration after the season.

by Mr. Sanchez on May 12, 2010 4:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Guess I had it backwards

I still know there’s some incentives factored into Wags’ deal, since FW was grandstanding about how much money the Braves are actually spending, since he says the incentives are almost a sure thing to be reached. And also those in Glaus’s deal.

by Bronn on May 12, 2010 4:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Wags deal lists no incentives...

although I wonder, if he retires, does that mean we don’t have to pay the buyout?

by Mr. Sanchez on May 12, 2010 4:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Just in case

Watch him end the year 2-3 saves short of Franco. I think he’ll come back to get the job done then, especially if he’s more than capable.

by royhobbs on May 12, 2010 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions

We have a RF...

we need a leadoff man. Werth isn’t bad, but I’d rather not pay him what he’d get. We’ve got enough pieces going forward no need to spend big unless it is a clear need like leadoff, or a younger player that can join the rest of the core.

If Chipper does retire, we’d probably have the payroll freed up for it. Especially since we’d be unlikely to renew Diaz’s contract.
