Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 5/11

Gwinnett 1, Pawtucket 5

  • F. Freeman 2-4 2B, .292
  • C. Martinez 4IP 0H 0R 0BB 4K 4.05ERA
  • J. Lyman 1IP 2H 0R 1BB 0K 3.52ERA

Freddie Freeman makes his return to the lineup after missing the last few games for....some reason... and he appears to have not missed a beat in his time off. His OPS is up around .850 now. That is pretty damn impressive for a guy who is one of the youngest players in the league. Unfortunately Freeman was about the only guy to show up with a bat tonight and James Parr was ineffective in his start.

Mississippi 5, Chattanooga 0

  • J. Schafer 2-5 2B, 2K, .400 Avg
  • W. Cabrera 2-5 2 2B, RBI, .297 Avg
  • D. Linares 3-4 2B, HR(4), 3 RBI, BB, .270 Avg
  • M. Minor 6IP 1H 0R 3BB 8K 4.17ERA 6-0 GB/FB

Everything appeared to go right for the Braves in this one as the offense pounded out 10 hits with 7 of them going for extra bases and Mike Minor completely shut down the Chattanooga offense not allowing a hit until the 5th inning and regaining the minor league lead in strike outs. Donell Linares has found his stroke again recently and apparently has been learning to take a walk as he has 8 in his last 10 games (0 in the previous 20).

Kinston 6, Myrtle Beach 4 - 12 Innings

  • G. Rodriguez 1-5 HR(7), 2 RBI, 2K, .250 Avg
  • G. Avila 2-4 HR(6), 2 RBI, BB, .315 Avg

The Gerardos were the only offense that Myrtle Beach could muster in support of Matt Crim and Chad Rodgers eventually blew the game in the top of the 12th inning. I really don't have anything else for this game.

Rome - Off

I miss my Rome baseball.

Tonight

is Mike Minor night! That’s a great looking line.

Has anyone on TC seen him pitch live since he became a “strikeout pitcher?”

Schafer was in the leadoff spot for Mississippi as well

Can’t wait until we get him back in the bigs.

Who would he replace?

I’m looking forward to Schafer making it back too, but who does he replace? Cabrera or McLouth?

by KLB on May 11, 2010 11:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Who knows..

But based on the output of those two, neither of them are blocking him from a starting job, that’s for sure. I’d like to see Schafer get more at-bats in the minors though.

Seriously though, which one could be dealt? I think Nate has more value – but also a longer suck streak.

It is going to be interesting to see what FW can do this season…

McLouth is owed more $$$,...

otherwise, I think how easily one could be dealt would depend on what we ask for in return. Quite a few teams could use some OF help, so if our price was low enough in terms of ‘spects, I’m sure someone would be willing to take a flier on at least one of them. But there’s no point in making that move unless we really wanted to call up Schafer (or Mitch Jones, Matt Young, Alex Romero, etc). And right now, there’s no reason to do that.

by Mr. Sanchez on May 12, 2010 9:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Also, along that line of thinking, we have to ask ourselves this: Is it better to keep these guys (who have proven that they can be really good baseball players) or sell low on them?

The odds of at least one of the three (Diaz, Melky, Nate) turning it on are good.

Or is this just more rehab before joining Gwinnett?

And Linares is making me feel awful smart. Could he be more than Canizares?

Was this Schafer's first game at Mississippi?

Good to see him hitting, though he probably still needs more time. He needs to do a better job walking and avoiding the Ks, if he can. We can do without him providing anything from a power stand point if he’s having good at bats and getting on base. We can’t have him striking out a lot AND providing not much power.

by Bronn on May 12, 2010 12:01 AM EDT reply actions

Schafer has struck out quite a bit his entire career if I’m not mistaken. If he can control the K’s at all, it’s a good thing. Glad to see him hitting well, and going to see him hit on Thursday if he’s still with Mississippi. If he needs all summer at AAA so be it. I hope he makes them think about promoting him anyway.

I like what Minor is doing

But lets not get ahead of ourself. His WHIP is still high, so is his ERA and he’s walking way too many guys. Like I said when the Braves drafted him I thought that there were better options with the #7 pick but now that he’s a Brave I’m 100% behind him and I hope he does extremely well and make me eat my words.

Rudy was a righty. That was my dude. I saw him a lot when he was with Richmond, and a couple times when he was with Atlanta, but never after that. I was in Vero Beach a few years ago when he was with the Dodgers and he’s walking up, gets this huge smile on his face and acts like I’d just seen him the day before. I hadn’t seen him in 8 years at that point. What a great guy.

minor

so we were saying he had a lower ceiling than most 1st rounders but was more of a sure thing… this new minor has a higher ceiling now?… and is still a sure thing?

by MacsGlasses on May 12, 2010 1:23 AM EDT reply actions

His floor is still the same I think. He just has a higher ceiling now and as with any high ceiling prospect, there is more risk there. Basically I think he’s still at least a back of the rotation starter, only now he’s got a chance to be more. I liked the pick but I have to admit I didn’t see these strikeouts coming and I’m loving it!

by ajones2522 on May 12, 2010 8:38 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m guessing his ceiling is the same it was last year, it was just underestimated last year by everyone except the Braves.

Very possible. I know they probably would have said this no matter what but the FO kept saying they drafted Minor because they really liked him, not because he was signable. They were either really lucky or really smart and based on their track record with pitchers, I’m gonna say really smart.

Question:

Do you guys think there’s any chance Minor would be ready for Opening Day 2011 and then we could trade a guy like JJ for our power bat?

JJ/KK for our power bat/free $$ to add a power bat.

With Minor, possibly Medlen...

or perhaps have Medlen in the 5 spot to start the year with the plan being call up Minor in June, I wouldn’t be surprised if we spend this winter looking to move a starter again. Lowe first to see if we can shed the salary, and if not him, then see what we can get for JJ or KK I guess. But I would not be surprised in the slightest to see one of those three dealt this winter.

by Mr. Sanchez on May 12, 2010 8:24 AM EDT up reply actions

I wouldn’t be surprised to see one dealt as soon as this year’s trading deadline.

Depends on where we are in the standings....

we might be sellers, but you know if we’re close the front office is buying in Bobby’s last year. The thing is though, if they felt say Schafer and Minor were ready to take CF and 5th starter (especially 5th starter, since you can lessen a bad one’s impact with off days and a shortened rotation in the playoffs), the team could be both a buyer and a seller, moving say a starter for a LF that can leadoff, and using them and Schafer to replace two of the 3 non-Heyward OF who get shipped out for prospects.

by Mr. Sanchez on May 12, 2010 9:35 PM EDT up reply actions

In addition to Schafer making an OF expendable...

or Minor/Medlen making a starter expendable, you’ve also got Kimbrel, Marek, Gearrin, Dunn, Proctor, etc who could make some of the back end of our bullpen like Salary Relief, Moylan, Saito or EOF expendable.

Yes. I think we SHOULD explore the option of trading JJ – but for a legit 3B.

JJ is a Boras client. He is out of here in a few years, leaving us with compensation picks. We have plenty of guys with better stuff coming up the pipeline.

Willie Cabrera

He does nothing spectacular but he just hits, he has decent pop, speed and plays good D. Maybe he could be a solid 4th OF option.

by Jay212033 on May 12, 2010 2:28 AM EDT reply actions

Could be. He’s never been much of a prospect but he’s put up solid numbers at almost every stop. Prado took a similar route.
