Open Thread 5/1: Astros at Braves Overflow

5-1 Braves in the 6th. Huddy has been great. David Ross has been his usual self as our wondeful backup catcher. And Troy Glaus would like to show all of his TC haters his middle finger.

Go look at computer reviews on any site...

Every site I looked at when I was buying mine had Mac’s rated #1. I have owned 4 PC laptops and none lasted more than 3 years. Every one of them got slower and slower despite the fact I defragged and kept my anti virus updated. A Mac will run just as fast in 5 years as the day you buy it and you never have to do anything to it.

Yeah...It's $100

if you go with the 15 inch Macbook Pro which is $1700 now I believe. If you go with the 17inch, it’s $150 off. Apple just released updated versions of the Macbook pros in the last couple of weeks. I have heard some bad stuff about the 17 inches regarding them getting really hot, so I would really recommend the 15 inch.

"Never doubt Derek Lowe's ability to win despite himself."

by EricGreggWasPaidOff on May 1, 2010 5:45 PM EDT up reply actions

No...

I am not a computer nerd. If you are a nerd who knows how to take your computer apart, then pc’s are great. If you are like the rest of us and you just want something that works every time you turn it on and won’t crash after 2 years, then macs are 100x better. PC’s are best suited for computer gamers who like to tinker with their computer between long sessions of online gaming.

Also, I always hated apple worshipers. I never thought I would even consider buying a mac, but when I looked at the differences between the two and found out that the Mac is superior in every aspect other than gaming performance, it was an easy decision.

by letsgobravos on May 1, 2010 5:47 PM EDT up reply actions

The only time Macs are superior to PCs in every aspect is when you’re comparing apples to oranges. Please think on that.

"Never doubt Derek Lowe's ability to win despite himself."

by EricGreggWasPaidOff on May 1, 2010 5:51 PM EDT up reply actions

You do know that, now that Mac uses Intel chips, it’s the SAME EFFING HARDWARE? There is nothing inherent in PCs that makes them fail. The things that absolutely wreck PCs almost always originate from user stupidity, not from hardware deficiency. They do not “crap out after 2 years;” My last laptop still works just fine, I sold it to my uncle to get my new one. It’s going on four years now. Macs are not divine; if your argument truly hinges on them only working for average users, i.e. they do so little with it they never jeopardize them, you may have a point. But I know that is not the case, and even if it were it would still not denote an inherent failure in a PC’s makeup.
Plus, again, you pay a premium for that “sexy” aluminum case and white apple stamp. If you’re not a total moron and know how NOT to fry your own computer, PCs are better every day of the week and twice on Sunday due to their greater cost efficiency plus they are more “future proof” (as in, easier to expand and upgrade down the road than Apple’s lockboxes).

by J-Freak on May 1, 2010 5:53 PM EDT up reply actions

hehe

I’ve used a Mac for a year at my place of work, and have a well-running (albeit outdated) PC at home.

So, I think I’ve had the opportunity to assess the pros & cons, and I just don’t like Macs as much. I don’t think that’s being stubborn, but being objective. I was excited to try the mac. It has disappointed me.

Tigers love pepper; they hate cinnamon.

by Jareth Cutestory on May 1, 2010 5:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Argh.

Alright, before i get called out as being a fanboy, no, I’m not just stubbornly defending PCs because that what I use. I use PCs because of the reasons I’ve stated. I just look at the evidence, and the evidence shows that most of those “Macs are of God, PCs are of the Devil” arguments are bunk. An idiot can fry his own Mac as much as he could fry his own PC if he doesn’t know what he’s doing; but since PCs have 90-ish percent of the market, their failures are magnified because there’s simply more of them. Apple has a small enough market share that they don’t have machines breaking in the same volume, so they can hide behind the assumption that their hardware must be immaculate when it’s actually no different than the other stuff.

by J-Freak on May 1, 2010 5:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Say whatever you want, but you are in the minority

based on the research I have done and my personal experience.

I have had 4 pcs that all crapped out on me. Do you think that was a coincidence. I used them for school and did nothing to them to cause them to die. I did all of the stuff they tell you to do in terms of maintenance and kept my virus protection up to date. Do you think it was just a coincidence?

by Jareth Cutestory on May 1, 2010 6:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, I do. For one thing, computers within the last five years have much better track records than anything that came before them. Secondly, My last laptop I used for school, work, and heavy duty gaming, and it never suffered this mythical “performance slowdown” you folks keep talking about. Honestly, it isn’t very difficult to keep one running like it should. Get a free antivirus program like avast!, avoid torrenting, and don’t surf to questionable (read:Porn) sites. It will run like a new car every time you boot it up.

"Never doubt Derek Lowe's ability to win despite himself."

by EricGreggWasPaidOff on May 1, 2010 6:15 PM EDT up reply actions

It really doesn't matter

what the problem is caused by. From what I understand, the issue is that windows inherently slows down over time because it creates a web of applications that start up. With every laptop pc I have owned, I have had to constantly keep the task manager up to kill a myriad of stupid applications that I did not turn on. Macs do not have this issue because the operating system does not constantly install applications and run them without your knowledge. Obviously I am not an expert on computers. A PC expert would have no trouble so they have no reason to buy a Mac. I think the majority of people would be more happy with a mac though.

by letsgobravos on May 1, 2010 6:35 PM EDT up reply actions

who knows how to work on computers

Actually, no. I didn’t have to work on it. I installed the games I wanted and played them. I also followed the three simple steps listed above, and, as they say, boom goes the dynamite. one can be gamer without knowing how to dismantle and reassemble their entire computer.

I’ll try to bottom line this very clearly: Most people who torch their PCs do it because they did something with it they probably shouldn’t have. One free antivirus program and a bit of common sense will keep a PC running like new until either the hard drive fails (which is an issue inherent to ALL hard drives, even Mac ones) or you choose to retire it and move on. It… is… that… simple.

by J-Freak on May 1, 2010 6:18 PM EDT up reply actions

by letsgobravos on May 1, 2010 6:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Ok. You guys are right.

There is a huge global conspiracy in which disinterested parties say macs are better than pcs. I was just caught up in the ruse and I will now have to suffer the consequences. Roughly from memory...

1. 2002- HP- $1100- Lasted one week and crashed. Returned it and swapped it for #2.

2. 2002- Sony- $1700. Lasted less than 3 years. Ran extremely slow after 14 months so my computer engineering roommate worked on it. Worked great for another month or two and then slowed down again. Basically the same thing kept happening and I kept taking it places to have it cleaned up up. Hard drive crashed and that was the end of it after about 2 and a half years.

3. Gateway- $1300- 2005 Ran slow after 6 months. I bought the maintenance plan for it so I took it back to best buy and they cleaned it up several times. It would work well for a month or so before slowing down again. The fan broke on the inside and it started making a really loud noise during use. It also started to get really hot. The hinge to the screen broke just over a year after I bought it so I had to buy #4 because I couldn’t wait for them to fix it because of school. I got it back a couple months later. It still works now, but its basically unusable because it makes so much noise and is so hot.

4. Toshiba- $900- 2007 This was the best of the group. It ran relatively fast for a year. Then like the others, it started to get slow so I had the tech guys at school work on it. After 15 months or so, the fan broke and it started to run really hot. It also started dying after only a few minutes if it wasn’t plugged in. 22 months, the hard drive crashed and that was the end of it.

Like I said, I have only had my Mac a couple of months. Maybe I ll have similar trouble with it, but from what I have heard/read, I think it is a lot less likely. Every pc I have had has turned out to be a POS. The “experts” I have talked to have told me my experience was not uncommon. The guys at best guy said the average PC laptop last for 3 years while the average mac lasts for 6+.

I am not going to argue this point anymore. If you like PC laptops, congrats. I will probably never buy another pc again.

by letsgobravos on May 1, 2010 6:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Also...why do you suppose...

the guys at best buy all told me that the Apple was far superior to any PC? They don’t work on commission and 3 out of the 4 guys I talked to owned PCs. They have no reason to push Macs over the 50 dif models of pc they sell.

Have you ever owned a mac? I have owned 4 pcs and now 1 mac. If you haven’t owned a mac you can’t really compare the two products. I have owned a HP, Sony, Toshiba, and Gateway laptop. They all sucked after a year and stopped working in 2 and a half years or less. I really liked my Toshiba, but it crashed after less than 2 years. I will never buy another pc.

by EricGreggWasPaidOff on May 1, 2010 5:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Wrong

They have no incentive to sell a mac over a pc. 3 of the 4 guys I talked to owned pc’s and were huge nerds. They said they liked their PC because they could mess with it and customize it for gaming. Despite the fact they like pc’s, they said macs are better for anyone who isn’t a gamer and just wants something that will work well for a long time. They also weren’t incompetent. They gave me unbiased opinions on every product I looked at and left the decision up to me.

You guys bash this guy if you want...

but he is probably right. Our lineup is pretty bad (thus far) and our pitching staff (thus far) is significantly worse than last year. Hopefully that will change. I think there is a good chance JJ stabilizes and that will give us 3 solid starters. Does anyone expect KK and Lowe to suddenly starting pitching solid?

In regards to the lineup, I think we have all seen enough thus far to know there is a serious problem. 3/4s of the lineup is in the midst of a horrible slump. Maybe some of those guys will turn it around, but I think it is being awfully optimistic to expect this lineup to improve enough to be consistently good.

I think you are wrong. Lowe looked pretty good in his last outing, KK is not bad for a 5th starter. McLouth and Glaus are pretty much out of their slumps already. Cabrera is getting a lot better. Diaz is still out of control, but he rarely starts anyway.

Heyward is pretty good

by bighop on May 1, 2010 6:02 PM EDT up reply actions

We'll see...

Our offense has been really bad 90% of the time this year. I see no reason to think it is going to turn around and be solid on a consistent basis. I really hope that I am wrong and they turn into gang busters. Also, Lowe has been pretty bad since he came to the braves. I had really high hopes that he would turn it around this year, but that appears very unlikely based on what we have seen thus far. We will be lucky if his ERA drops into the 4.0s. Same goes for KK. I really thought he might be a lot better in year 2 pitching in the US.

Obviously I do not want to suffer through another crap year. I just think there are a lot of pieces to this team that need to improve significantly for this team to be competitive for the playoffs. Maybe it will all come together, but I think it is unreasonable to “expect” it to happen.

by acie4mvp on May 1, 2010 7:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree it's early...

But when do you expect things to come together? Even when we were winning the first couple of weeks, the offense was inconsistent and only showed up when DLowe pitched. I hope things come together, I just think a lot of people around here “expect” that to happen when I think its a lot more likely that we have already seen what this team can do.

As for the Mets, their payroll is what? 60 million more than ours? Maybe they are finally going to see some results for the money they are spending this year. I would feel a whole lot better about our prospects if the front office/ownership was willing to fork out that kind of money for our team.
