Braves Announce Roster for Low-A Rome Braves

Hat tip to rbravesfan for posting this lead.

The Rome Braves announced their Opening Day roster:

Pitchers: Luis Avilan, Thomas Berryhill, Paul Clemens, Dimasther Delgado, David Hale, Tyrelle Harris, Steven Kent, Robinson Lopez, Chris Masters, Brett Oberholtzer, Cory Rasmus, Julio Surinach, Julio Teheran, Arodys Vizcaino, Ryan Weber

Catchers: Christian Bethancourt, Osman Marval, Braeden Schlehuber

Infielders: Ryan Barba, Mycal Jones, Jordan Kreke, Samuel Sime, Riaan Spanjer-Furstehnburg, Matt Weaver

Outfielders: Ramon Flores, Cory Harrilchak, Kyle Rose, L.V. Ware

Looking through some of the assigned players, I can say that I'm pretty excited for Rome's upcoming season, and I can find plenty of reason for making my way up there at more than just once this season.

I guess he’s staying in extended for a while.

Do you have any word on Robert Brooks. I know he was injured last year. Is there any word on him?

No. He wasn’t in ST, but the guys who the team knows are going to end up in either Danville or the GCL weren’t going to show up until April 9th. I was going to ask Tommy Shields, who’s basically the ST boss, but he’s really hard to get a hold of, he’s always zipping around on a golf cart. My best guess is that his knee injury was career ending, but we’ll see a little later in the year if that’s true.

Wow

This team has 4 CFs in the OF. The sleeper on this team is Ramon Flores, he was just signed by the Braves last season and hit very well in the DSL. If he continues to hit he’s going to move very quickly.

how old is Flores? 18?

Yeah but he is already 23. Gonna need to see some more before I label him any sort of prospect.

I think it's good

that Bethancourt will probably be JT’s and Vizcaino’s catcher throughout the minors. Hopefully they’ll build a bond and come up to the majors around the same time and already be in sync with eachother.

Anybody care to post some lineups?

I am just posting this one so somone can correct me.

1. Rose CF
2. Jones 2B
3. Bethancourt C
4. Spanjer-Furstehnburg 1B
5. Kreke 3B
6. Harrilchak RF
7. Ware LF
8. who plays short?

by bbxxj on Apr 3, 2010 9:47 PM EDT reply actions

If I had to guess

It would be either Barba or Jones at SS, with Weaver possibly at 2B, and Sime or Kreke at 3B. Sime and Barba have played a little bit of everywhere, and could be bench utility-types, too.

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

Kyle Rose...

anyone know much about him? I’ve heard his name a couple of times this week but don’t know anything about him besides hes an outfielder drafted in the 8th round of the 2009 draft.

Fast. REAL FAST. Good defensive OF with a good eye at the plate. I believe he was a coaches son in HS, but don’t hold me to that. A lot of people have him pegged as a sleeper candidate this season. Supposed to be a smart player all the way around but doesn’t project for much power.

kinda sounds like Gregor Blanco

with more speed and potential. thanks for the info!

One game for Danville last year (after OPSing at a .750 clip in the app league for 48 games) ...

Went 3/5. Besides that, Marlins drafted him in the 49th round in ’07, but obvi he did not sign.

Like yondaime said, he is VERY FAST. Ran the 60 in 6.31 back in ’08.

Plus to add to what everyone else has already said

He’s actually learning to switch-hit this season as well to better utilize his speed.

And to add to what everyone else said (seriously, he’s insanely fast) he’s one of the nicest kids you’d ever want to meet. Always smiling and he freaking loves baseball.

If he can get this switch-hitting thing down and hits well

It’s going to interesting to see how the Braves handle our CF situation. We desperately need a LO man in ATL. I really hope Schafer can get back on track cause when I saw Schafer in Rome he was hitting and hitting for power and causing havoc on the base paths as well.

am curious....

where Salcedo ended up……

by rbravesfan on Apr 3, 2010 10:22 PM EDT reply actions

Same here

I assumed it would be either MB or Rome… hmm.

by sunking1056 on Apr 3, 2010 11:12 PM EDT up reply actions

He'll be headed to Danville, I assume.

I’ll flip if they send him to the GCL.

Him and Tyler Stovall are the two biggest snubs from Rome’s roster, I think.

by PWHjort on Apr 3, 2010 11:22 PM EDT up reply actions

From an interview I heard on Bill Shanks board

Both Stovall and Salcedo will get more time in instructs and will more than likely join the Rome team.

by Jay212033 on Apr 4, 2010 12:45 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I've since heard that too.

That’s good to hear. I heard Salcedo has a massive ego, so this is probably good or him. And maybe they can teach Stovall where the strike zone is during spring instructs :).

by PWHjort on Apr 4, 2010 9:31 AM EDT up reply actions

By the way

Robby Hefflinger would be on this roster, but he’s been at home with mono for the past two weeks. This unfortunately might put a big dent on his season.

Aw, I only guessed 15 right for Rome.

I’m gonna go out on a limb and say these guys will piggyback to start the season. They only have a few actual relievers, Weber, Harris, Surinach, and Avilan, and while guys like Berryhill, Hale and Clemens are probably better off as relievers, they have been able to start.

A TON

of piggybacking! Too many good SP there and the Braves have said they wanted Hale to be used as a SP as well so there’s plenty of great pitchers for Coach Ingle to use.

by Jay212033 on Apr 4, 2010 1:09 AM EDT up reply actions

It’s very interesting. I like the piggybacking in April and early May, because by that time the guys who deserve more innings have usually shown themselves.

I seen some info about him on wwwmlb.com on the Braves team site. You have to get in the headlines archives under March 2010 and his name is listed there. It states he had some lower back issues that set him back a bit but that the Braves still think he has alot of upside.

??????????

I think he’s in the Gulf Coast, read he had some injuries that slowed him a bit,but I also read that tyhe Braves do like him alot.Read he has some good stuff to work with.

Nice

I’d rather see this team than Mississippi. Aside from Minor and Johnson, Mississippi doesn’t have anyone who excites me compared to this squad. Plus I want to hear the PA announcer say RSF.

by playertobenamedlate on Apr 4, 2010 8:31 AM EDT reply actions

Cory Harrilchak

I’m wondering about any opinions re his upside potential.

22 yrs old. 5’10" ht 175 wt. bats and throws left. ’09 14th round pick.

ln Danville, he put up a fairly excellent line for a 60 G / 253 PA short season: 10 2B 5 3B 2 HR 41 RBI 19 SB 2 CS .324 AVG .401 OBP .441 SLG .842 OPS. also played all OF positions.

Did some research on his college career: In the ‘08-’09 seasons (as a 20 and 21 year old), he played for Elon University (NC) in the Southern Conference. Team went went 44-18 and won the conference champion, and then 44-18, but lost in the finals. Over the 2 seasons, he had 115 G / 461 AB, with a .369 AVG and +/- .1.108 OPS. also led the team in R both seasons, with a total of 150.

by fandave on Apr 4, 2010 12:02 PM EDT reply actions

typo: Elon was 41-18 in ’09.

by fandave on Apr 4, 2010 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions

At the worst he can become a Ryan Langerhans type fourth outfielder (minus the plus plus arm). At best, maybe a starter who hits for a high average but not much pop, kind of a lefty Matt Diaz. I really like him a lot, he’s a hell of a pure hitter and really knows the game. I want to see him play against some higher competition at his age, but he’s definitely a gamer.

Mystery 3rd base

Don’t we have a pretty good prospect named Sanchez? Might have been in the Carribean last year. Anybody have a clue what’s up with this guy. I can never remember his name.

Edinson Sanchez

Hes been in the DSL the past two years and was their POY last year, but i havent heard anything about him lately.

I was told he and a lot of the DSL guys were going to be coming to Orlando April 9th to start Extended Spring Training. He’ll be fighting for a job at either Danville or the GCL team.

Thanks to both of you

Has he just turned 18? Is that why he was in the DSL? As POY, I assume he’s pretty well thought of, any comparison to Edward Salcedo?

by bighop on Apr 4, 2010 2:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, they like him a lot. He’s bigger than Edward, something like 6’4" and apparently they think he’ll really be able to develop some pop.

Thanks again

The things you can learn on this site continue to amaze me. This time last year I was a casual fan who liked to watch the ballgames. Now I’m learning about players in the system who haven’t even made it to America yet, much less the Minor Leagues.

by bighop on Apr 4, 2010 8:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Knowledge of the minor leagues, the players, the process, the harsh realities, does so much to enrich the enjoyment of the game. I feel lucky that I was able to really understand that starting around when I was 15 and it’s make the last decade plus of baseball so much more enjoyable for me.
