Braves Hi-A Team, Myrtle Beach, Announces Roster

Since Myrtle Beach is independently owned we usually get info from them before the other Braves Minor League teams. Here are the Braves Minor Leaguers who will be assigned to Myrtle Beach to start the season:

Pitchers:  Randall Delgado, Zeke Spruill, Juan Abreu, Angelo Paulino, Matt Crim, Yeliar Castro, Jaye Chapman, David Francis, J.J. Hoover, Benino Pruneda, Jose Ortegano, Chad Rodgers, and Cole Rohrbough.

HittersAdam Milligan, Gerardo Avila, Yoel Campusano, Shayne Moody, Amadeo Zazueta, Randy Gress, Geraldo Rodriguez, Cole Miles, Chris Sheehan, Jahdiel Santamaria, Luis Sumoza, Matt Kennelly, and Jesus Sucre.

Luis Sumoza will apparently start the year on the disabled list.

Other rosters are taking shape, and some players are listed on the milb.com pages, but most of them are not 100% correct. I'll have them once they're announced.

This!

I don’t think I could ever like a team that doesn’t work itself up from the minor leagues. Free agents are fun and all, but there’s something special about developing the next star in baseball.

Even the Yankees

need to develop players. Even if they are only used as trade chips (which they aren’t—see Cano, Hughes, Chamberlain), it is important to have good prospects.

Freddie Freeman will be starting in Triple-A, so we can see him playing in G-Town!

Freeman earns spot on Triple-A roster

Morton hit Heyward with an offspeed pitch. Early indication is that the baseball survived the impact.

by award6 on Apr 3, 2010 8:12 PM EDT reply actions

Wow.

I love Freddie, but that might be a bit aggressive. I’d like to see him have a couple good months in AA first… Of course, he was pretty awesome in ST.

by Jacob Peterson on Apr 3, 2010 9:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree. He didn’t spend much time in AA last year considering he got injured about a month after being promoted.

by BravesFan on Apr 3, 2010 9:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

But I guess we’ll have to see what Mississippi has in store at 1B to make this move. I certainly wouldn’t have minded him just simply starting there, even if they were to promote him promptly. Someone else mentioned it, but I seriously am curious to know if it really has anything to do with Heyward; if there is a comfort level that the org. is taking into consideration, since it’s safe to assume that they’ll be living together, much like Francoeur/McCann, Hanson/Medlen. It’s a little off-base, and it’s not like Freddie couldn’t immediately prove his worthiness to AAA, but it’s something to consider.

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

by royhobbs on Apr 3, 2010 10:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Based off MB’s roster, my guess is Mississippi’s first baseman is Mauro Gomez.

Agreed

Oh well, Freeman’s a quickie and the organization is treating him as such. Still think AA was the best place to send him. Oh well, not like the southern league and international league are a whole lot different. Probably the most insignificant jump in the minor leagues.

by PWHjort on Apr 3, 2010 11:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I never agree with that theory. There are so many 10+ year vets in AAA, guys with lots and lots of big league time, guys who can just carve you up as a pitcher or bait you as a hitter. I see plenty of AAA and AA (IL and SL actually) and the AAA games are just better baseball.

They will be carrying quite a few starters.

Delgado
Spruill
Crim
Hoover
Ortegano
Rorhbough

Did I miss anyone?

by BravesFan on Apr 3, 2010 8:21 PM EDT reply actions

Come to think of it. Ortegano finished in AA last year and peformed well. Why is he getting deomoted back to highA?

by BravesFan on Apr 3, 2010 8:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Just normal shuffling of rosters.

Mississippi probably had too many players or something.

by esadb on Apr 3, 2010 8:26 PM EDT up reply actions

That may mean Minor is starting in AA.

by BravesFan on Apr 3, 2010 8:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Well,

Yeah. I mean, if he’s not in High-A, that’d be the place.

Minor won't be in Rome, either.

http://www.romenews-tribune.com/view/full_story/6934288/article-Rome-Braves-release-Opening-Day-roster?instance=home_news_lead

So, AA it is. I think AA is the most appropriate level for him. His competition in the SEC was at least as good as that of a typical class A league, and there’s really nothing for him to learn at class A.

by PWHjort on Apr 3, 2010 11:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I was pretty shocked Ortegano is going to be back. My guess is that 2 out of he, Crim, and Hoover will be relievers. Or, at least for the start, they’ll piggyback some guys.

In the picture in that link...

Paul Clemens looks SKINNY. I’m 6’2", 165, but he looks even lankier than me.

Except for the OFs, that Rome team looks sick.

Still though, he’s pretty skinny. He has the longest hands of anyone ever.

Anybody care to post some lineups?

I posted this question in Rome’s thread and again I’m just posting my shot in the dark in hope someone who knows what they are talking about will correct me.

1. Miles CF
2. Campusano
3. Milligan RF
4. Avila 1B
5. Santamaria LF
6. 3B?
7. Zazueta SS
8. Kennelly C
6.

by bbxxj on Apr 3, 2010 10:09 PM EDT reply actions

Couldn’t really guess how the lineup will play out, but I’d put the defensive positions at C Sucre, 1B Avila, 2B Campusano, 3B Moody, SS Gress, LF Milligan, CF Miles, RF Rodriguez with Kennelly and Sucre sharing a lot of catching and DHing.

I was off on a lot of guys. I’d guessed the roster this morning and I had Myke Jones, Mike Minor, Chad Rogers and a few other guys. Still, I had 16 right, which isn’t bad.

Ortegano is a bit shocking...

he had a good year last year, produced in AA, and seemed a possibility to make the big league staff. I thought he was a lock to lead the Mississippi staff.

by Mr. Sanchez on Apr 5, 2010 8:28 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, it’s hard to believe that ST performance would decide that much, especially for a guy on the 40 man.

And was he that bad this spring?...

Outside of the one horrid inning, I can’t really remember his games.

by Mr. Sanchez on Apr 5, 2010 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions

And looking at Mississippi's supposed starters...

Richard Sullivan (I guess he’s the 5th), Jacob Thompson, and Mike Minor instead of Ortegano? Sullivan was much worse than Ortegano last year #s wise, and Thompson split the year between Myrtle and Rome without touching AA, while Ortegano excelled in his handful of starts in Mississippi after doing great in Myrtle. That one just bottles the mind.

by Mr. Sanchez on Apr 5, 2010 2:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I mean you look at Mississippi’s starters and you’d have to say it’s going to be Minor, Cordier, Sullivan, Diamond, Thompson, and Cofield. Frankly, I’d put Ortegano ahead of all of them except Minor.

Ok, so where’s our new shortstop gonna play? The one that was supposed to be like getting a first round draft choice, Salcedo or whatever his name is?

by MO'toole on Apr 4, 2010 4:35 AM EDT reply actions

He’s only 18 and he’s brand new to the country. They must have determined in ST that he’s ether not ready for a full season yet, or he’s going to be better served to play at the short season team. Either way, his season will start later, in a few months at Rome, or in a few months at Danville.

Apparently so,

because he’s not on any of the full-season rosters.
