Braves Find a New Way to Lose: in 6 Innings
It's a Final, folks: 1-0. The Weather Gods have spoken, and they have no kind words for the Braves' offense (or defense). Apparently they couldn't sit through another inning of the Braves' futility in all non-pitching phases of the game. And really, who could blame them?
Once again, the Braves had no trouble getting runners on base against a Mets starter--this time 10 baserunners off Mike Pelfrey--but once again, they struggled mightily to actually get any of those runners in. You have to wonder if maybe the Braves' hitters are letting their slumps get in their heads a bit. Some credit, though, has to go to Pelfrey, who did a good job of making out pitches when he needed them. His final line was 5 IP, 0 R, 5 H, 5 BB, 3 K, and a 0.284 WPA.
The futility really was a team effort. Jason Heyward hit a weak pop-up to short with 2 outs and the bases loaded in the first (a portent of things to come). J-Hey would later hit into a rally-killing double play to end the 3rd. Troy Glaus reached base twice but in his 3rd at-bat, grounded into another inning-ending double play. Even Martin Prado struck out with 2 on to end an inning.
(More recap--if you can bear it--and Awards after the jump...)
Tommy Hanson pitched great, though he struggled again with his pitch counts. The lone run off of him was unearned, and it was a doozy. With Jose Reyes on 2nd and 2 outs in the first, Jason Bay hit a grounder down the line that Chipper Jones snared (with some difficulty). It didn't look like he had much of a chance to get Bay at 1st, but he threw it anyway. And of course his throw missed 1st base by 10 feet. When Troy Glaus was unable to immediately corral the errant throw, Reyes raced home with the game's only run.
The error would be extremely costly; if Chipper just puts that ball in his pocket, this game is suspended 0-0 and resumed at a later date. Instead, it's yet another hard-luck loss for a Braves pitcher. Hanson's final line was 5 IP, 1 R (0 ER), 5 H, 2 BB, 8 K, and a 0.117 WPA. (In case you are wondering, that's not quite a Javier Vazquez Loss--he didn't go the necessary 6 innings, not that he had a choice.)
Chipper played tonight even though earlier today, he had said he would miss a few games (which made me look like a dope for writing the open thread intro so far in advance). When I heard he was playing, I had a premonition that he would do something to hurt the team's chances of winning. I know he thinks that we need his bat in the lineup, but his bat (and glove) don't help us if he's not playing at or near 100%. Doesn't he remember the foot injury that he tried to play through a few years ago that caused him to hit .200 for an extended stretch before he finally went on the DL? This is why we have bench players, Chipper. Don't try to prove Brian Jordan wrong. Just do what's best for the team and sit out if you aren't at your best. I'd rather have Omar Infante than "Crippled" Jones.
Awards
MVP: The rain... At the time of the delay, the Mets' chances of winning were 67%. I'm giving the rain credit for the last 33%.
LVPs: Chipper-- 0/2, BB, K, -0.075 WPA, and the deciding error; Heyward-- 0/2, GIDP, -0.174 WPA (I think this will cost him the league WPA lead...)
MVPILEs (MVPs in a losing effort): Hanson and Brian McCann-- 1/1, 2 BB, 0.095 WPA
UnClutch Play (there were no clutch plays)-- Chipper's error (there's no WPA assigned to the error specifically, but it'd be around -0.050)

I hate to say this
because I like Terry Pendleton and don’t think he’s done a bad job as hitting coach… But they may have to fire him just to break these guys out of their slump-ish mindsets and get some new blood in the clubhouse. Sometimes making a change just for the sake of making a change can have good results. It wouldn’t be a good baseball move in my opinion, but it might be a necessary clubhouse move. If that makes sense.

I still think we give it a little more time
But yeah, I’m slowly starting to like that idea as well.
I can’t even sleep tonight and I’m dead tired…it’s probably because of the offense against the Muts.

I'm all for FGon next year as manager....
But am I really the only one thinking that TP was/is being groomed for this?

I'm beyond placing blame, we just suck bad right now, but...
Shouldn’t Glaus have caught that? I mean, I know the throw was a little off, but it definitely just ricocheted (sp? lol) off his glove, giving up the one run….

Probably
But that was only 1 run. With all the opportunites we had tonight, we shouldve won by 5 and that run wouldn’t have mattered.

This sounds horrible, but we would have lost anyway, right now. And I never say that kind of crap. Doesn’t even matter. Horrible.

Don’t say that. I know the offense hasn’t been all there lately, and neither has the defense, but I never EXPECT the Braves to lose any game where they’re down by less than 5 runs.
The Braves had runners on every single inning of tonight’s game. Eventually, even hitters in slumps will score runs with those opportunities.

Where do I start....Can't blame Chipper or Glaus
Need runs to win…i think there’s bigger problems on this team than anyone would like to admit…this is bad….ESPN was havin a time exposing our offense or lack there of and deservingly….Someone let me know when it’s not early anymore so I can express concern without ducking for cover.

my "fav" part of the game....
It’s “officially” a game at this point….
Heyward comes up with a man on….
Suddenly, the camera angle changes, rather abruptly, to a shot of Hohn sprinting, waving his arms…
Called off…..
Gee whiz. What a fucker.

I still hate Hohn and like to blame him for anything that goes wrong with us when he’s involved, so I was not thrilled when he called the game like that.
He didn’t even let Heyward finish the at-bat. He saw one pitch. It was like Hohn knew what he had to do to hand the Braves another devastating loss.
If I was a bad guy, I would seriously put a hit on Hohn, and I wouldn’t feel bad about it… in the slightest. (“joking,” of course)

Well that's incredibly stupid if it's true.
I didn’t rant and rave and say the sky is falling the sky is falling. I simply brought up the idea. What do TP and his family read this blog? WTF?
No.
Its probably due to the fact that Hobbs had one in the works or already posted. Didn’t want two separate threads discussing the same thing.

Get rid of TP. This team has gone on major hitting slumps for the past 3 or 4 years. Safe to say quite a bit longer and more sustained then almost any other club. And I’ll be the sacrificial Lamb on this one: I’m done with chipper. I hope this is his last season. The injuries are frankly just becoming ridiculous. Every other series he’s hurt and he’s a liability in the field and at the plate when he’s not 100%. I don’t know the stats, but is there any third baseman in baseball worse defensively then chip? Its not just his age, he’s making terrible decisions. He’s not 25 anymore, he can’t do the things he used to, no matter how hard he tries. Get glaus out of there too. I’m sick of seeing frenchy 2.0 at 1B

Chipper ruined the game today, big time..
That comment by Bryan Jordan may have cost us 2 of the loses this week (Saturday and Sunday). Saturday, Chipper wasn’t right. Sunday, all of Chipper’s swings, except 1 fastball he swung through in his 2nd at-bat was horrible. I haven’t even mentioned his defense yet either.
Old Chipper would have just sat out 2 or 3 games. New, post-Jordan comment Chipper is trying to play through his injury of the week seemingly to prove a point to the fans, commentators, media, teammates, and sadly, to Brian Jordan. Chipper doesn’t have to prove anything to anyone!
He’s put in his years, he’s put up his #‘s, his legacy is set in stone already, he’s a Hall of Famer, no doubt. Now, that doesn’t mean Brian Jordan’s comments aren’t without merit. Jordan was a superb athlete and ex-teammate of Chipper. The frequency and “flukeness” of Chipper’s injuries is unparalleled in the Modern Era of sports, by far.

6 runs in 5 games

It's not that bad.
We lost by a throwing error and poor field conditions didn’t help. The Braves will start hitting again except for Melky. So we lost 5 in a roll and this game wasn’t finished. It really sucks that they called it on account of rain. If anyone remembers we ended last season with, what was it? Oh! Yeah a 6, I repeat, 6 game losing streak and 4 of those games were against the last place Gnats. Pissed me off as I recall. They’ll get it together, this is a good team and I have no idea why they can’t hit better, but I know they will. I’m thinking Prado and J Hay are trying to carry the team and if they are thinking that way, it will affect their hitting as well.
Senator, we have another old saying,"Don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining." Fletcher
No, we THINK that they are a good team. But they’re not playing like a good team and have given us no reason to think they are a good team…up to this point.

Beard, have you noticed the number of long-term TCers that are saying they are avoiding the open threads? I haven’t been here very long, I started because the content was so high quality. It’s dropping fast in the threads in my opinion.
Heyward is pretty good
I agree with you completely. I’m about to stop wasting my time in the OT’s as well. It’s a shame too, because if people acted like adults it would be a good time.

The OTs are a different beast
They’re fun when the Braves are winning or getting blown out to such a proportion that the topics change to something interesting, but the amount of people randomly popping into to P-bomb the joint do make it a little unnerving at times.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
I understand, I don’t even post on OT’s very often, between watching the game and reading the posts, I don’t have time! It just seems so much more juvenile than last year. TC is still awesome, the front page stuff is better and different from any other site I check. It just seems like it is losing some of the next tier of input below the Mods.
Heyward is pretty good
OTs have always had a juvenile, playful air to them. You have to kind of imagine them as the internet version of being at the ballpark – you’re almost always going to be around some people you don’t really pay any attention to, there will always be a drunk Beard present to curse and shout, and tons of outlandish comments and other off-topic conversations going on at the same time as the game. And when things go good, you know it, and when things go bad, you very well know it.
I find it a little disheartening that some of the goings on in the OTs are actively driving people away, but it’s not like I can quell too much behavior. I get a bad enough rep being somewhat of a censor as it is, but me going around policing everything that I or someone else doesn’t like in the OTs is like me going around the ballpark and telling people to stop doing what they’re doing.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
I have the same problem with all the inside jokes...
