Braves Minor League Recap: 4/23
Gwinnett 4, Durham 5
Mitch Jones stays hot, he's 5 for his last 12, hitting his first homer as a Brave. Freddie Freeman couldn't match yesterday's performance, but he did manage a double. Brandon Hicks breaks an 0-14 slump with two hits, but was also caught stealing after both singles and made an error. James Parr is a finished product and keeps proving it with solid performances like the one he put up tonight. Things haven't been going well for Scott Proctor; he's given up 6 earned runs in his last 3.1 innings, and opponents are hitting .462 against him in his 8 apperances.
Mississippi 5, Mobile 4, 10 innings
The M-Braves didn't need Randy Gress for late-inning heroics tonight, as Willie Cabrera led off the bottom of the 10th with a double then was promptly doubled home by Donnel Linares. It's nice to see Cabrera getting off to a good start; he probably needed to repeat AA, but the best thing for him would be to prove that he doesn't need to be there all year. Catcher Orlando Mercado did most of the damage on offense though, hitting a bases loaded double to drive in three runs. Richard Sullivan probably could have fared better, but his start was still decent. The bullpen did very well though, with Mike Broadway, Brett Butts, and Steve Marek combining for 4 scoreless innings and 7 strikeouts, with Marek earning the win.
Myrtle Beach 6, Kinston 5
I'd to have been able to watch the situation that allowed Gerry Rodriguez to hit a triple. Gerardo Avila had a great night, hitting a 2 run homer, a double, and collecting a walk. Jose Ortegano has not pitched well in his return to the Carolina League. Considering how well he pitched at AA last year he was probably as shocked as the rest of us when he ended up back with the Pelicans this year. Hopefully there's a mechanical issue affecting him and not a personal one.
Rome 2, Kannapolis 3
Chris Masters gives up his first earned runs of the season on a pair of home runs, but still pitched very well. The R-Braves have been inefficient the last 2 games, scoring just 5 runs on 24 hits. Kyle Rose reached base 3 times but no one was able to drive him in. On the plus side, he wasn't caught stealing either.

LINARES!
and I wonder if there is any teams desperate for pitching help that would take some of our finished products from AAA that seem to be lacking room higher (Parr, Redmond, etc)? Of course not in some blockbuster package, but maybe for a player that’s stalled out in their system and could possibly take leadoff here. Maybe Fernando Perez from Tampa?
Fernando Perez isn’t very good. I’d rather have the marginal pitching.

His AAA #s are a decent obp and good speed...
I can’t see harm in rolling the dice (and there could easily be guys I’ve never heard of unlike Perez, or Craig Gentry with Texas), cause it’s not like we really have much need for the redundancy of say Sullivan or Parr or Marek or Redmond or Cofield or you get the point, with so many around, a rotation that is under contract/club control for the next two years with options like Minor and the A ball arms for after that, and a bullpen that is already solid with Kimbrel, Gearrin, Venters, Dunn, etc around. We seem to have more than enough excess in the pitching department, why not take a chance on a guy who just may pan out to be the leadoff hitter that the big club lacks, and doesn’t appear as though one is near ready in AA or AAA either. If only Pittsburgh still had Nyjer Morgan, or perhaps we can pry someone from a team that has huge problems with their pitching staff like them, the White Sox. The Nationals just lost Marquis, maybe we can do Morgan for McLouth and one or two of those low upside, AA or AAA arms. Damn it, enough rosterbating for now.

The thing is, a guy like Perez isn’t someone anybody thinks about until they’re going to take him off the 40 man. He’s not worth going out of your way to get because there are plenty of guys who get on base with some speed and don’t hit for power. Heck, we already have Gregor Blanco.
If you compare the two guys you see in 168 Major League games Blanco has hit .245 with a .357 OPB and .659 OPS and 15 SB, Perez has hit .234 with a .301 OBP .652 OPS and 5 SB in 41. If you compare their AAA numbers, in 300 games Blanco has hit .266 with a .364 OBP and .692 OPS with 51 SB, compared to Perez hitting .290 with a .363 OBP and .777 and 60 SB in 156 games. So yes, Perez has an advantage in the AAA numbers, but he also has half a year less playing time, so he could come back to Blanco’s numbers if they pulled even. Perez is also a half year older with considerably less time in the Majors, so really he’s less proven.
We already have Fernando Perez. Most teams already have their own Fernando Perez. His speed isn’t game changing and he doesn’t do anything else well enough to make him the kind of guy worth bothering to pick up. Every off season there are 5-10 guys with his same skill set available as Minor League free agents. There are probably 2-3 of them still out there right now.

it's gotta be difficult...
being scott proctor right now. not only is he pitching poorly, but everyone in the braves bullpen that are considered his competition have been lights out.
My opinion cant be wrong. It's my opinion. Those who don't like it can piss up a rope.
It didn’t sound to me like his arm feels that great. He was sort of non-committal about it when I asked.

If his arm isn't 100%...
may as well sit him down for a week or two. No need to rush with the way the bullpen is working for both Atlanta and Gwinnett, and the possible need for him in June and beyond.
