Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 4/20

Todd Redmond picked up his second win of the season for AAA Gwinnett.

Gwinnett 2, Norfolk 1

  • M. Young 3-5, .255
  • B. Clevlen 1-2, RBI, .406
  • T. Redmond 7.1 IP, 1 ER, 6 H, 4 K, W (2) 1.69
  • C. Kimbrel 1 IP, 2 K, SV (3), 0.00
  • Matt Young is 9 for his last 18, raising his average from .103 to .255 in 4 games. Brent Clevlen continued his hot start, driving in a run to extend his hit streak to 6 games, but was forced to leave when his back tightened up on him. He should only need a few days of rest to be back to full strength. Todd Redmond did what Todd Redmond does, working on guts and savvy, with a fastball that didn't get over 88 mph, he baffled Norfolk hitters all night. The only run he allowed was actually given up by Scott Proctor. Craig Kimbel needed just 11 pitches to finish off the game and is striking out 4.67 for each walk he's given up, a huge improvment over the 2.29 he posted last year.

    Mississippi 4, Mobile 5

  • A. Romero 2-4, BB, .313
  • M. Gomez 2-4, 2B, 2 RBI, .227
  • J. Thompson 4 IP, 5 R, 2 ER, 4 H, 3 BB, L (2), 6.23
  • Jacob Thompson was the victim of some poor defense, but the bullpen pitched mastefully, as Tommy Palica, Mike Broadway, and Lee Hyde combined for 5 scoreless innings. Alex Romero, who spent 66 games in the Major Leagues with the Diamondbacks last season, continues to prove that AA is little challenge for him.

    Myrtle Beach 1, Winston-Salem 7

  • G. Rodriguez 1-4, 2B, E, .311
  • C. Rohrbough 5 IP, 3 ER, 5 H, 2 BB, 6 K, 8.71
  • Gerry Rodriguez gets a hit in his 6th straight game but the Pelicans' offense wasn't able to muster much tonight. Cole Rohrbough wasn't exactly stellar, but this was by far his best start of the young season. Former Brave farmhand Jon Gilmore pounded out 3 hits in the game for the Warthogs.

    Rome 2, Kannapolis 3, 20 innings

  • K. Rose 2-7, BB, RBI, .383
  • C. Harrilchack 2-7, 2 2B, BB, .233
  • B. Oberholtzer 8 IP, 2 ER, 6 H, 7 K, 2.12
  • C. Rasmus 3 IP, 1 H, 3 BB, 4 K, 1.04
  • L. Avilan 4 IP, 3 H, 2 K, 0.00
  • T. Berryhill 5 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 2 K, 2.25
  • I don't know for a fact that this was the longest game in Rome Braves history, but I can almost guarantee it since very few Minor League games have ever gone 20 or more innings. Brett Oberholtzer started the game and continued his fine work this season, as did Cory Rasmus and Luis Avilan who combined for 7 scoreless relief innings. Tom Berryhill, who had worked just 1 inning in each of his previous 3 relief appearances pitched well in 5 innings, but gave up what would end up being the game winning run in the top of the 20th. It was a tough day for the R-Braves' 4-5-6 hitters, as Matt Kramer went 0-8 with 2 Ks, Christian Bethancourt went 0-6 with 3 Ks, and Chris Lovett went 0-8, but only struck out once.

Thankfully, no. Lance is a very unpleasant individual and Mike is a wonderful human being. The fact that they share a name is bad enough, I’d hate for them to be related.

it was TOTALLY insane. Topped only by the fact that we stayed until the bitter end. And they play at 1pm today. Holy cow.

Wow, what fans! And I almost cried for the guys when I saw the 1pm start for today. They barely had 12 hours from the end of one to the start of the next.

    OMGoshhhhhhh!!!!!

I TOTALLY can not believe I forgot to take and send a “view from my seat” pic during the 20th inning when it was like 11:20ish pm…..but by that point everyone was pretty much delirious….at one point it was totally quiet and this one drunk dude yells out “pitcher’s gotta big butt”….and everyone in the entire place cracked up. (And we would not have stayed that late if it weren’t spring break week.)

I know that the Rochester Red Wings

and Pawtucket Red Sox hold the record for the longest pro game, with a 33-inning affair on April 18, 1981. Well, actually only the first 32 innings were played then. They suspended the game and played the last inning on June 23. The last inning was actually a really big deal, with lots of media people showing up to document the end of the longest game. MLB was on strike at the time, so it was the biggest baseball news around.

My parents lived in Rochester at the time, and my dad remembers listening to part of it on the radio. I was born in between the 32nd and 33rd innings, but I don’t remember anything!

Kimbrel has been looking good. Hopefully he has his mechanics down, cause our bullpen will be downright sick once he gets called up.

Our bullpen is downright sick already! Who goes to make room for Proctor and Kimbrel? I want to say Chavez, but he’s done absolutely nothing to bitch about.

    Heyward is pretty good

    Please

Not Proctor. He is nowhere ready to be on the A-Team. He still needs a lot of work in AAA.

ITA give Proctor time. Kimbrel’s control sounds great. Can’t wait to see him with the big club. I say leave the BP alone as long as it works. I’m sure Bobby will blowout someone’s arm soon enough.
