Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 4/15
Gwinnet 1, Charlotte 2
- M. Jones 2-4 K
- B. Clevlen 1-4 2B, K
- T. Redmond 7IP 4H 2R 0BB 9K
- S. Proctor 1IP 2H 0R 0BB 1K
Brent Clevlen continues to baffle my fingers as every time I go to type his name I misspell is. He is also hitting the ball well which of course means I have to type his name every night. I will be the first to say I might have missed the boat in not putting Todd Redmond on my top prospect list in the off-season. He has allowed just 7 hits in 14 innings while striking out 15 so far this season. I'm not saying he is going to be a frontline starter but I believe he could be a useful back of the rotation type of pitcher if given the chance. Freddie Freeman dropped another 0-fer on the board tonight and has just one XBH and multi-hit game this season.
Mississippi 10, West Tennessee 7
- D. Linares 3-5 2B, HR(2), 2K
- C. Johnson 2-5 3 RBI, 3K, SB(1)
- K. Cofield 5.1IP 2H 3R 2BB 4K
- S. Marek 1IP 1H 0R 0BB 3K
Donell Linares had himself quite a game tonight and has been the best hitter on the team in the early going. I truly expect that to continue and wouldn't be surprised to see him in Gwinnett before the All Star break. Cody Johnson now has 14 K in 7 games but also 9 RBI and an OPS over .800. The surprise pitcher early on may be Stephen Marek. Here we have a guy who was all but worthless in 2009, posting an aggregate ERA of 6.00 between Gwinnett and Mississippi after being on the cusp of the majors to start the year. In the early going of 2010 he has appeared in 4 games and struck out 9 in just 5.2 innings allowing just 2 hits and 1 walk. He could be pushing himself back into the Braves bullpen plans of the future.
Myrtle Beach 15, Frederick 5
- Y. Campusano 1-4 2B, 2 RBI, 2BB, K
- A. Milligan 1-4 HR(3), 2 RBI, 2BB, 2K
- G. Rodriguez 2-4 HR(2), 3 RBI, 2BB, K
- M. Kennelly 3-5 2 RBI, BB, K
- D. Francis 2.2IP 2H 1R 0BB 6K
The Pelicans walked 10 times as a team in this game and just waited for their pitches to hit throughout. Adam Milligan has been the best all-around hitter in the Braves system so far. Most people worried about Milligan's plate discipline, a fair concern to be honest, but I countered saying it is hard to get a good read on a guy's approach when he is hitting .350 in a half season of minor league ball. Adam walked just 15 times in a combined 262 ABs last year. This season, in 26 ABs, he already has 5 BB. Cole Rohrbough had another rough outing surrendering 4 runs and 4 BB in less than 3 innings. David Francis looked pretty spectacular in his short outing however.
Rome 0, Greenville 4
- K. Rose 1-3 SB(2)
- B. Oberholtzer 5IP 3H 2R 1BB 7K
The Braves offense managed just 3 hits and 1 walk and appeared to be the antithesis of the Myrtle Beach offense this evening. Kyle Rose finally managed to successfully steal another base and Bret Oberholtzer pitched well, but otherwise there isn't much to write about here. Bethancourt did go 0-fer with a K.

I really like him. He’s shorter than you’d expect, but one of the most down-to-earth Minor Leaguers I’ve ever met, so I’m really rooting for him to succeed. That said, he seems to have a good idea of what he wants to do, and I think he’ll have some success doing it. I see him as a solid Major Leaguer with some flashes of star potential at best, at worst he might turn into a Daniel Murphy type of player, but a better defender.
Don't be...yet.
I don’t know if his wrist is fully healed yet, but he’s very young for his level right now. He’ll figure it out.

Anybody think he might be Gwinnett because Heyward is in Atlanta? Letting friends stay close, maybe share a condo like Hanson and Medlen, might be for Heyward’s comfort level. I have no clue if that’s accurate, but I’ve wondered it since I thought he would go to AA.
Not completely
But it’s not off-base IMO. Freeman might’ve been better off starting in AA, but AAA is a good test of his fortitude now.
Ryne Reynoso whom also shared living with Hanson and Meds at one point was in AA last year regardless.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
Redmond continues to impress. Developing a little bit of a man crush.

I was really surprised that Redmond made it through waivers. After his performance on Team USA last year I thought someone with a hole in their rotation might want to take a shot at him. I mean, I’m really surprised the Royals didn’t pounce, or his old team, the Pirates. He’s a bit hefty, but seems like a smart pitcher who has a ton of Minor League experience to draw from. I think he could do well in someone’s rotation, or as a long guy out of the pen.
Bethancourt goes hitless?
What sort of parallel universe have we found ourselves in?
legalize it, don't criticize it.
Rohrbough
I’m really disappointed in his performance so far. Perhaps the new delivery will take some getting used to, but let’s hope his confidence doesn’t get shattered before then.
