realistically, probably 200 PAs…but 100 PAs at the very least. I know it’s tough b/c McLouth, Melky, and Diaz all suck right now but we just gotta try to be patient. It’s not like they’re all going to just stop hitting this year.

Except Frenchy’s problem wasn’t BABIP – it was no walks, lots of Ks and poor plate discipline – pretty much the complete opposite of Melky.

We don't have a leadoff hitter, been saying it for two years...
hopefully Rose, if not Schafer. I just don’t see Schafer as a leadoff.
Maybe…Schafer has good power, but he also takes walks and has good OBP. Sizemore-lite is the ceiling…but maybe he’ll turn into a Rasmus type if he develops properly.
I think he would do just fine in the leadoff role, but he might be best utilized elsewhere.

No, I mean Sizemore.
I see a lot of Sizemore in Slim Schafer. Now, he’s not equal to him, but has the same sort of skill set (lower contact rates, high pitch counts, good speed, good OBP, nice pop). And Sizemore was leadoff for a while.
And yeah, I know Rasmus isn’t a leadoff, but I was conjecturing a different development path where he develops more power.

Yeah, I dunno. I don’t think he’d be a prototypical leadoff hitter, but with the pitches he sees, the walks, and the speed I think he would be at least serviceable. Certainly better than anything we have right now. The only thing that would worry me would be contact rate.

Actually Jason has 12 Ks to Melky and McLouth's 15 Ks. Melky, McLouth, Diaz have 22 Ks combined.
not much of a comparison. Jason has struck out more times that each player, but he is still caring the outfield offense all alone.

This makes no sense to me
Why put a decent hitter down low where he gets fewer plate appearances. It’s the opposite of logic.

The idea is that, since the 1-2-3 guys are your best hitters, you want to have a decent guy up before them.

Why not just move them down and put that guy batting first, then?
If you have another decent hitter who needs to be on base when the good hitters are up, put him at the top of the line-up.
Show me how this makes mathematical sense.

I know that someone created a dumbass line-up optimization tool that used historical linear weights for positions, and it determined that it doesn’t matter who hits 8th because it thinks the 9th batter is a pitcher, no matter who is in that spot in the line-up.
When you’re talking about those bottom spots in the line-up, the impact that they have the line-up is very minimal. So put your worst hitters there, not a decent one.

The maximum difference doing the non-intuitive lineup is like 5 runs a year — 0.5 a win. So its no big deal.
