Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 4/13
Durham 3, Gwinnett 1
- M. Jones 3-4 2B, K
- B. Canizares 2-4 2K
- B. Hicks 2-4 2K
- J. Lyman 2IP 0H 1R 1BB 1K
Gwinnett drops to 2-4 on the season and continues to struggle offensively. Jeff Lyman managed to give up an unearned run despite walking only one man (Elliot Johnson walks, steals and then scores on an error). Mitch Jones appears to have snapped out of his early season funk with three hits. Freddie Freeman had another rough night going 0-4 with a K.
Mississippi - Off
Myrtle Beach 4, Frederick 9
- Y. Campusano 1-4 HR(2), 2 RBI, K
- A. Milligan 2-4 HR(2), 2 RBI
- G. Rodriguez 1-4 2B, 3K
Adam Milligan is off to an impressive start for the Pelicans batting .350 with an 1.109 OPS. He still needs to cut the Ks down a bit but he appears to be adjusting well already and I wouldn't be surprised to see him repeat his results from Rome last year and get moved up to Mississippi at the midpoint. Matt Crim, who led Danville and the Appy league in wins last season, got hammered in relief for the Beach giving up 7 runs (3 earned) in 4.1 innings of work.
Rome 1, Greenville 3
- K. Rose 0-3 BB, 3K, CS(4)
- C. Lovett 2-3 2B, K
- LV Ware 1-2 2B, RBI, BB
- C. Masters 6IP 2H 2R 1BB 10K
- R. Lopez 2IP 3H 1R 1BB 2K
I am going to go ahead and anoint Chris Masters the second coming of Chuck James. He is already putting up similar number to what Chuck did in Low A with a similar repertoire (13K in 7IP vs 2H) and was just as filthy last season in in Danville. There is no room for projection from Masters but I wouldn't be surprised to see him cruise through the next two levels of the minors without much to stop him. The Braves appear to be limiting Robinson Lopez's innings after he only threw 48.2 last season. This is fine with me and I wouldn't be surprised to see him get around 100 innings of work this year. And no Bethancourt didn't play, hence their first loss. Also I am a little worried by Rose's caught stealing numbers. He has only been successful in one attempt thus far after only getting caught 4 times in 30 attempts in 2009. This bears watching.

Kyle Rose...
I coulda sworn he was picked off tonight as well. Kind of a rough night for him.
Teheran is scheduled to pitch tomorow, right?

Bethancourt
I know he’s young but what are they doing with him?!?! He’s already sat out 2 games in the early going and both times he sat out teams run at will.
And Masters’ palm ball is an awesome pitch.
I guess they just want to get Brandon Schlehuber some starts at catcher, not sure why they didn’t put him at DH though. Seems like they’d fit him in somewhere, being so hot at the plate and everything. I hope there’s no injury involved..

What kind of velocity does Masters have? And I’m assuming he is a fastball, change up guy, since you called him Chuck James 2.0
My impression of Masters, and from folks I’ve talked to, is that he is 100-times smarter than Chuck James. Chuck was a bit of a thrower, Masters is a real pitcher.
I can add this, Masters reads. Not sure about Chuck on that one.
I wrote a novel, it's about baseball, you should buy it: https://www.createspace.com/3407939

We can only hope
I see Masters more as a Joe Saunders type.
Ha, forgot about Chuck James. Milligan’s obviously ready, bring him up to bat leadoff.
