The Freak Is Too Freaky for the Braves; Giants Win 6-3

If you were going to make a list of the best pitchers alive, Tim Lincecum would be pretty high on the list. It's hard to feel like you have a good chance to win when you're going up against a guy like that, even if he does look like Spicoli from Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Yet, I imagine the Braves felt pretty confident going into tonight's game (at least about the pitching matchup... the weather was another story). Braves starter Kenshin Kawakami outpitched Roy Halladay and Josh Johnson last year, among others, to earn the nickname "The Dragon Slayer," and is clearly unintimidated by facing top pitchers.

And for a while there, it looked like KK was going to slay another dragon. He breezed through the first few innings, retiring the first 11 Giants he faced. Meanwhile, the Braves got to Lincecum early, thanks to a 2-run homer from Brian McCann in the first inning that drove in Eric Hinske. Unfortunately, Lincecum mellowed out after a shaky first couple innings and started lighting up the Braves' hitters, ending up with 10 strikeouts--all swinging. He went 7 innings, giving up only 5 hits and 1 walk along with the 2 earned runs; his WPA was 0.135.

Still, KK was more than matching Lincecum (in results if not in dominance or hair length), right up until Pablo Sandoval hit a 2-out triple (fat dude can run!) in the 4th. After the triple, Aubrey Huff hit a routine grounder to short... or rather, where the shortstop would normally be playing if the Braves had not put on an extreme shift. So instead of KK being out of the inning with no damage, Huff's ball rolled harmlessly into the outfield, no Braves fielder within 20 feet of it. The bad luck single broke up Kawakami's shutout, but the Braves still had a 2-1 lead thanks to McCann's homer.

Star-divide

Kawakami was breezing again until 2 outs in the 6th. Again it was Sandoval who got things going, this time with a single. Kawakami then walked Huff (his only BB of the night), bringing up Mark DeRosa. DeRo laced a single to right, and it looked as if Jason Heyward had a shot to throw Sandoval out at the plate... But the kid's throw was well up the third-base line, and to make matters worse, McCann whiffed on it (perhaps he mistook it for a Lincecum fastball?). As if matters weren't worse enough, they got even worser when the ball bounced right into the sliding Kung Fu Panda, who used his bulk to good advantage, pushing the ball well into foul ground. Huff would score on the error, making it 3-2, Giants.

KK got out of the inning, but the damage was done. His final line was 6 IP, 5 H, 3 R (2 ER), 1 BB, 1 K, and a -0.164 WPA. (I should note that WPA does not make allowances for defensive miscues, so KK is penalized for the run that scored on the error even though it was not his fault. Without that error, his WPA would have been slightly positive.)

The Braves were still in the game, but Lincecum smoked them in the 7th, and they couldn't muster anything in the 8th against Jeremy Affeldt, either. Kris Medlen, in his second inning, got into trouble in the 8th, giving up a single to Aaron Rowand. This was followed one batter later by a back-breaking 2-run homer by Sandoval (yes, he pretty much was the Giants' entire offense tonight--of course, he is pretty much their entire offense on most nights). The Giants would add one more off Eric O'Flaherty to put the game more or less out of reach, 6-2.

In the ninth, Jason Heyward hit a 5-run go-ahead homer with no one on base. Unfortunately, the umpires refused to score the play correctly, calling it just a solo shot. (Fools. Do they not know who they're dealing with? J-Hey will extract his revenge at some point, mark my words.) Blessed by the umpires' ignorance, Affeldt then completed the Giants' victory by striking out Matt Diaz.

A few positives from the Braves' perspective: Heyward is now tied for 2nd in the NL in homers (behind only Pujols), and Martin Prado still leads the NL in batting average. KK pitched quite well, even if (as is becoming a trend) we didn't score enough to get him a win. And the biggest positive of all is that the game was even played, since it looked for a while like the Braves might have to play 34 straight days, with a 1-game road trip to San Fran in the middle. Even a loss, I suspect, is better than that.

Awards

MVP: Sandoval-- 3/4, HR, 3 R, 2 RBI, 0.142 WPA

LVP: lots of candidates, but I'll say Melky Cabrera-- 0/4, K, -0.107 WPA

MVPILE (MVP in a losing effort): McCann-- 2/4, HR, R, 2 RBI, K, 0.189 WPA. (McCann was also the only Brave with a positive WPA)

Clutch (and un-clutch) play: DeRosa's tying single and the ensuing go-ahead throwing error, 0.374 WPA

Final - 4.11.2010 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 R H E
Atlanta Braves 2 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 3 6 2
San Francisco Giants 0 0 0 1 0 2 0 3 X 6 8 0
WP: Tim Lincecum (2 - 0)
SV: Jeremy Affeldt (1)
LP: Kenshin Kawakami (0 - 1)

Eh, I'll take 1 out of 3

considering how much we suck when we go to San Fran.

Plus, Heyward homered, so all is well.

Padres tomorrow…YESSSS!

Eventually...

One of Melky, Matty or Nate is going to have to get hot and start putting up some crazy numbers. Heyward can’t provide all the offense for an entire outfield on his own – at least not in his first month in the majors.

I registered a couple of days ago

To share this with you guys. Got the idea from your excellent pre-game write up before game 1

We were lucky to get out of this series with two out of three. You guys played well, the ball just didn’t bounce your way. Good luck the rest of the way except when you play us!

Wait a second...

A fan of an opposing team complimenting the Braves on playing well? Did I slip into an alternate reality? If not, I’m stunned….thanks?

We're not all bad

Braves played well. We probably didn’t deserve that first game, but we take all the luck we can get.

My Son was the third most valuable Giant position player by WAR in 2009. A little sad, a little happy.

Right now, I think the Braves and Giants are pretty even

The Braves hit a little better and the Giants pitch a little better. Satuday night was all Braves and Sunday night was all Giants. Friday’s game should’ve probably gone to us, but the Giants put together some clutch ABs late in the game. You can’t deny that. Same thing happened to us last Wednesday against Chicago. Some times you pull it out and some times you dont (insert TWSS joke here.)

It was a fun series. And both fan bases are probably going to pull their hair out by June at the rate we leave RISP.

The Braves have a little more talent on the roster, but until they reach that potential offensively, both teams are very even.

someone needs to make a Braves video similar to that. Only we dont GIDP that much…we prefer the strikeout.

Yeah, it was a good series with a lot of close games (even Saturday’s, despite the lopsided score) and without Chipper – the Braves look pretty good to me.

That is awesome. Thanks for sharing!

Your guys played well too, in the first and third games anyhow. I still don’t think the Giants have the hitting to go to the playoffs, but their pitching makes them tough.

if the Giants were to land a guy like Adrian Gonzalez

I’d be pretty afraid. a 2-3-4-5 of Renteria, Sandoval, Gonzalez, and DeRosa along with the addition of Buster Posey later in the season could be good enough to make it to the playoffs.

It would be hard to imagine the Padres trading Gonzalez to a division rival, but you never know. But until the Giants get a big hitter for the middle of their lineup, I really don’t see them making the playoffs.

Methinks it would be hard to imagine the Giants landing Gonzalez without giving up Posey.

Maybe if the Padres were sold on Bumgarner (and the Giants threw in another decent piece or two). It would be interesting to see that Giants team with Adrian on it, however.

I doubt the Pads go for that unless Bumgarner gets his velocity back.

1. Prado
2. Escobar
3. Chipper
4. Heyward
5. McCann
6. Glaus
7. McLouth
8. Melky/Diaz
9. Pitcher

Now thats a hell of a lineup

by ATLBRVS_19 on Apr 12, 2010 1:32 AM EDT reply actions

I would switch McLouth with Escobar. I still don’t think McLouth is a bad hitter. He is going to rake eventually. Esco needs the guys in scoring position to be efficient.

Are there still any Prado doubters out there?

Goooooooooo Martin Praaaaaaaaaadoooooooooooooooo!

I must say, that I’ve been very impressed with Heyward. He could have just kept swinging over the tops of all those nasty sliders and breaking pitches he’s being fed, but he’s making quick adjustments at the plate and laying off some of those pitches. I’m sure his strikeouts will start to go down and walks increase once he figures it all out. It’s so early, but damn he’ll be scary as hell once he does.

I’m just happy we survived San Fran. What a pitching staff they have. Hopefully we’ll see the offense come to life when we roll into San Diego.

So the answer is,...

none? Maybe Ellsbury, but the Red Sox aren’t letting him go. Denard Spann isn’t bad, but the Twins aren’t about to let him go either. Not really a lot of options fit the traditional high obp with lots of speed idea.

Too much overthinking

DLowe — 2 “bad” games, lots of walks, etc…. 2 wins

Everyone else (except game 2) — excellent starting pitching, few walks…..1 win, 3 losses

Solution — start giving up more walks!

And loading the bases every inning...

…solely to create jams to pitch out of. It’s the D. Lowe way. Of course, adopting that approach still won’t help the rest of the Braves’ rotation unless they also figure out how to utilize Lowe’s magical offense catalyst.

Lowe’s magical offense catalyst

is generated by the fear of losing if they don’t score at least 7 runs.

Prado already has generated 0.6 WAR (not taking defense into account yet). Legit.

I just looked up his stats. Hot damn! 4 walks to 2 strikeouts and he’s hitting for some power. It is the sign of the Apocalypse!

I really do hope Frenchy can keep it up. I’m not the type of person who wants to see anyone fail…other than the Yanks and Red Sox…only cause I’m tired of every network slurping up their used jock straps.

As I told my friend in DC

As every year with the Braves there was a new approach/swing/mentality/training he did over the off-season, and he’ll get some good knocks, but by May, all of MLB has his new stuff figured out and archived already, and he goes into panic mode and turns back into the 0 to -1 WAR player we’ve all grown to know.

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
