Spring Training Open Thread: Pirates at Braves

The Braves take on one of the Braves Minor League feeder teams from Pittsburgh. Two former Pirates will be in the Braves lineup. In another interesting move, Jay-Hey is batting second in today's lineup. This represents the third spot he's been in during his three spring games.

Nate McLouth, CF
Jason Heyward, RF
Chipper Jones, 3B
Troy Glaus, 1B
Brian McCann, C
Matt Diaz, LF
Eric Hinske, DH
Omar Infante, SS
Brooks Conrad, 2B

On the mound to start it off will be Kenshin Kawakami, followed by Jo-Jo Reyes, Lee Hyde, Erik Cordier, and Juan Abreu -- I'm interested to see all of those pitchers.

Can Wren get it over with and trade Jojo to KC already?

by redwards95 on Mar 4, 2010 10:22 AM EST reply actions

Wren’s waiting until the Royals are desperate enough to trade Jo-Jo straight up for Soria… Shouldn’t be too long.

Jojo still has value, just not as a starter. He’d make a great LOOGY (.210/.295/.350 against lefties, with close to a 3:1 k/bb ratio). I think at this point though it’s obvious he just doesn’t have what it takes to get rhb out at the major league level.

Looking at that lineup without Yunel and Prado really makes me appreciate how unbelievable our depth is this year.

i think bobby is playing mind games with heyward; bc each spot in the lineup you need a different situational mindset and bobby is testing him; I don’t think bobby has a chance at this battle, but its worth a shot to at least test him; lol

by RWH2 on Mar 4, 2010 10:35 AM EST reply actions

Good point. I had also thought that putting him in front of Chipper might mean he gets walked less.

by gondeee on Mar 4, 2010 10:45 AM EST up reply actions

More importantly, Chipper will get more pitches to hit b/c Heyward will always be on base in front of him.

Wait a minute...

We don’t want out RF to walk?? We spend 4 years begging for a walk out of Francine and now we do anything we can for our RF not to walk. Funny how that works.

Doesn't matter to me either way...

…cuz JH looks to walk if he doesn’t gets strikes…. and crush anything in the strike zone. Baserunners == Good.

by carpengui on Mar 4, 2010 11:42 AM EST up reply actions

Actually, beaserunners = bad when Heyward is up if you’re referring to the safety of the players. Because anyone on the field is in danger when Heyward comes up to bat.

by pancanbra on Mar 4, 2010 11:46 AM EST up reply actions

Ha! I admit I was worrying about Glenn Hubbard the other day.

by carpengui on Mar 4, 2010 12:48 PM EST up reply actions

I doubt that lineup position will appreciably effect walks.

By and large, some hitters have to patience to take walks and others don’t. The ones who get a lot of walks can foul off the tough pitches and make pitchers work. If Heyward starts out hot, it isn’t like pitchers are going to groove fastballs to him whereever he is in the lineup. There could be a marginal effect on walk totals, but it shouldn’t be significant.

by cavebird on Mar 4, 2010 12:14 PM EST up reply actions

Lol

I wish that were an actual Bobby quote: “just for shits, I’m gonna bat Heyward second.” This could be the first time that pitchers will pitch around someone to get to Chipper.

Speaking of, I really wanna see some production out of Chip, Glaus, and McLouth. I’m worried about all three of those guys producing. J-hey or not, I still could forsee this ball club struggling for runs. And unfortunately we don’t have Vazquez to throw shutouts every other outing anymore.

Didn’t we ultimately have to let him go because of the arbitration debacle with Soriano? We had to clear a place on the roster for him because of the premature signing of Wagner and Saito. That was my understanding at least…

by Gage23 on Mar 4, 2010 3:43 PM EST up reply actions

No. We just didn’t want to pay his arb. increase, and we have a good amount of OFers already. I understand why we didn’t bring him back, but I think he would have been great off the bench.

"My team of nine guys who hit like Albert Pujols and never ever bunt just beat your team with one Shane Victorino 472 to 3."

by justincredubil02 on Mar 4, 2010 4:11 PM EST up reply actions

In his stead, though

We ended up with Hinske, who gives us a bit more overall bench versatility, and is cheaper. There’s not a lot of difference between their offense impact. The only thing Hinske can’t do is play CF, but Melky will end up as our back-up CF.

by Bronn on Mar 5, 2010 12:04 AM EST up reply actions

All good points. I am still somewhat of a fan of the “Church for leadoff” idea though. That is the one thing that he could bring us that Hinske couldn’t. But, that would involve playing him on an everyday basis, and in this lineup, I just can’t make an argument for that.

by HEYJUDE on Mar 4, 2010 3:48 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah the DP is the true “rally killer”, IMHO, and today’s performance made me go look this up. Admittedly, it’s actually better than I expected — averaging under one per game — but I’d much rather see an emphasis on productive outs.

by carpengui on Mar 4, 2010 3:50 PM EST up reply actions

indeed

it could also be how old and slow our team has been that no one is fast enough to break up the DP

2009 GIDP by player

Yunel wins: 21
Prado and McCann 17 each
Chipper and Matty 14 each
FUGA – 11
FYF – 10…. but of course he also added 3 for the Mutts… unless they aren’t counting his GITP.

by carpengui on Mar 4, 2010 3:54 PM EST up reply actions

2008 GIDP by player

Yunel 24; Frenchy 18; McCann 17.

by carpengui on Mar 4, 2010 3:56 PM EST up reply actions

Looks like TP needs to have a talk with Esco… maybe a couple of others.

by carpengui on Mar 4, 2010 4:09 PM EST up reply actions

I don't think it is a big deal.

Double plays suck, but often better hitting teams (or better OBP teams) get them more because they tend to have more runners on base. Last year, Yunel tended to bat behind our best OBP guys for a large chunk of the season (Chipper and McCann), which gave him more opportunities to ground into double plays.

by cavebird on Mar 4, 2010 4:18 PM EST up reply actions

That’s true. You can’t GIDP unless you have runners on base. So it’s somewhat of a good thing… except for how annoying it is.

by Gage23 on Mar 4, 2010 4:20 PM EST up reply actions

Double-plays are the second worst possible outcome of any at-bat. They always suck.
