Brian McCann Makes an Appearance on Some Sports Illustrated Covers This Week

Atlanta Braves catcher Brian McCann will appear on some covers in the South East region of the US. Roy Halladay will be the cover player nation-wide, but the "masthead" player will change per region. I was a little concerned yesterday when I thought that McCann could get the SI cover jinx, but I think a little appearance like this does not warrant a jinx. Now Halladay on the other hand...

Oh, and SI does pick the Braves to win the NL Wild Card, but then they have us losing in the first round the Rockies. As a side note, the cover story is by Tom Verducci. I met him when I was down in Orlando a couple of weeks ago for spring training; sat near him in the press box. He's a real cool guy, very down to Earth for a big-time national sports writer.

Big fan of McCann

but he looks kind of goofy. Couldn’t they have found a better picture of him?

Yes, it’s an…exuberant picture, but it’s nice to see him there at all. Any cover with McCann is a good one.

Any cover of any Braves player is great. I think ESPN and SI have a tendency to exclude the braves.

Is that what you call an ace pitcher?

Fact

A certain Braves rookie batted .351 with an OPS over 1.000 before August 29, 2005, when he was featured on the cover of SI. He finished the remainder of the year batting sub .230, with an OPS in the neighborhood of .600.

I like Verducci, and like John Donovan, it’s nice to see some actual SI writers show a little bias towards the Braves from time to time, but let’s be realistic here – they’re often wrong. That being said, the Braves will win the division, annihilate the Wild Card Rockies, and then probably win the World Series, thanks to SI.

You really think two teams from the NL West make the playoffs this season??

I don’t discount the Rockies…in fact, they should win that division. I just don’t see the Dodgers starting pitching holding or the Giants lineup doing enough damage to compete with the NL East contenders this season.

Actually

I was just being facetious in defiance of SI. if I were to think about it, I would agree that the NL West doesn’t seem likely to send two teams to the playoffs, considering between the Phillies, Braves and Marlins, there’s a lot of pitching and offense that should warrant the Wild Card.

As someone who does not believe in “The Jinx”, let me just say that this cover should be the other way around.

I may be biased, though.
