Spring Training Open Thread: Nats at Braves

The Braves take on the Nats at Disney today. Manny Acosta was optioned to triple-A this morning, so we won't have to worry about that being back in the bullpen to start the season. Here is today's lineup:

Melky Cabrera, CF
Martin Prado, 2B
Chipper Jones, 3B
Brian McCann, C
Troy Glaus, 1B
Jason Heyward, RF
Omar Infante, SS
Matt Diaz, LF
Jair Jurrjens, P

Following Jurrjens will be the heart of the bullpen, Billy Wagner, Takashi Saito, Peter Moylan, and Eric O'Flaherty. Wagner, Saito, and Moylan are all pitching on back to back days, so this should be an interesting test for them.

Acosta

Chavez is almost a lock to make the BP even with his terrible spring! I’d rather see Kimbrel with his wildness over Chavez throwing the ball 96 belt high down the middle of the freakin plate.

Well to be fair, JC did have a pretty bad ST last year too, so maybe he just doesn’t pitch well until the games mean something.

Medlen hasn't been pitching in 9 days

Is anything wrong with him? Or has he gotten minor league time like Moylan and EOF?

by SwedishBrave on Mar 27, 2010 12:37 PM EDT reply actions

Minors. He threw 3 or 4 innings the other day according to DOB’s Twitter.

I’ve noticed he hasn’t been in a game in a while. Maybe I"m wrong about that, but it seems he hasn’t been in one the past couple of days or so.

Okay

Hicks at short stop. Blanco in left field.

1-2 to Zimmerman now.

by Bronn on Mar 27, 2010 2:48 PM EDT reply actions

Mike Morse just misses a HR off of Moylan. 2B to LF.

by Bronn on Mar 27, 2010 2:50 PM EDT reply actions

It’s been since 2008 since Moylan gave up a HR.

Hey Bronn – I’m somewhat new, so forgive me if you’ve answered this question a hundred times already – but why Superman?

Why not?

That was my entire reasoning for using him.

Entirely logical. I like that.

the row of supermans down the side of page is a bit annoying.

They sound horrible.

Lol, good announcing moment

Jim Powell was talking about how Moylan mostly stays on the rubber while he’s pitching. Then he steps off and walks it off for second.

by Bronn on Mar 27, 2010 2:56 PM EDT reply actions

And Moyland Ks Nieves

Strikes out the side.

Nieves went down on three pitches.

More changes

Kevin Mench in RF. Pete Orr at Third.

by Bronn on Mar 27, 2010 2:59 PM EDT reply actions

Melky Ks against Tyler Walker.

Conrad up.

Talking about Heyward now. His parents paid him a surprise visit today from Georgia-drove down starting at 4 AM

by Bronn on Mar 27, 2010 3:03 PM EDT reply actions

Nice!

Sorry he has not had a great day at the plate for them.

by HEYJUDE on Mar 27, 2010 3:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Nice comments to them from John about how they should be proud of not just what type of son they have in JH, but the parenting they’ve done too.

JS talking about how balanced the team is, how good FW has done putting this group together.

About Heyward’s parents, he had talked to them and told them they should be proud of just what kind of man he is already.

by Bronn on Mar 27, 2010 3:04 PM EDT reply actions

Walker worked a quiet inning. Got Conrad swinging…I think Thurston grounded out.

by Bronn on Mar 27, 2010 3:05 PM EDT reply actions

Saito in to pitch. Matt Young in LF. Blanco moves over to CF. Heyward still in RF.

by Bronn on Mar 27, 2010 3:07 PM EDT reply actions

Missed this earlier

Freeman is in at first. Grabs a foul ball for the first out.

by Bronn on Mar 27, 2010 3:07 PM EDT reply actions

JS talking about how they got Glavine in as the special assistant. They wanted him a part of the organization again. Wanted him to get some exposure to various front office aspects of the game so he can see what he might want to ultimately do with the team.

JS was asked to guess what he might eventually settle on doing with the team, but he doesn’t really know. Broadcasting, scouting, managing, or organizational.

Duh! (V8 slap to the forehead) just remembered I have a small external speaker that I can hook up in the headphone jack to make the audio of this where I can actually hear it.

Back to the game-Saito walks…somebody. Whoever was in pinch-hitting for the pitcher.

by Bronn on Mar 27, 2010 3:12 PM EDT reply actions

JS talking about how fun it is to be surrounded by talent, good scouts, good players, and great managers. It sucks when you’re on teams that aren’t contending and don’t have good resources. Well duh.

Missed a little bit of this conversation-they’re talking about the MLB rules committee and floating realignment.

by Bronn on Mar 27, 2010 3:16 PM EDT reply actions

Apparently, it’s a topic on their discussion list, but the committee has yet to actually talk about realignment.

Good to know.

Hicks chases the ball down in foul territory for out #3 here.

Going to the bottom of the 8th, it’s 2-0.

Dang Mets. Castillo with a 3 run homer to get the lead now 5-4.

Sammons with a double. Braves catchers are all going nuts this spring.

by Bronn on Mar 27, 2010 3:24 PM EDT reply actions

I think he moved Sammons over, but could be wrong.

Yeah, I’m not keeping up at all at this point.

But bottom of the roster guys are getting a couple of hits here.

Hopefully Hicks works out for us-we really could use more depth in the organization at shortstop. He’s got a pretty solid glove and his bat isn’t bad, but he needs to mature quickly.

by Bronn on Mar 27, 2010 3:29 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah,
