Spring Training Open Thread: Nats at Braves
The Braves take on the Nats at Disney today. Manny Acosta was optioned to triple-A this morning, so we won't have to worry about that being back in the bullpen to start the season. Here is today's lineup:
Melky Cabrera, CF
Martin Prado, 2B
Chipper Jones, 3B
Brian McCann, C
Troy Glaus, 1B
Jason Heyward, RF
Omar Infante, SS
Matt Diaz, LF
Jair Jurrjens, P
Following Jurrjens will be the heart of the bullpen, Billy Wagner, Takashi Saito, Peter Moylan, and Eric O'Flaherty. Wagner, Saito, and Moylan are all pitching on back to back days, so this should be an interesting test for them.

Moylan and EOF pitched yesterday?

I don’t believe so. Just Wagner and Saito.

Oh that makes sense. Well it should be interesting then.

Acosta
Chavez is almost a lock to make the BP even with his terrible spring! I’d rather see Kimbrel with his wildness over Chavez throwing the ball 96 belt high down the middle of the freakin plate.
Well to be fair, JC did have a pretty bad ST last year too, so maybe he just doesn’t pitch well until the games mean something.

Medlen hasn't been pitching in 9 days
Is anything wrong with him? Or has he gotten minor league time like Moylan and EOF?
Minors. He threw 3 or 4 innings the other day according to DOB’s Twitter.

So they’re stretching him out a bit then.

Hopefully. He definately needs to get a good 5 or 6 inning outing in before opening day

Is there something wrong with Escobar?
I’ve noticed he hasn’t been in a game in a while. Maybe I"m wrong about that, but it seems he hasn’t been in one the past couple of days or so.

Is there anyone even reading my play by play at this point? If there’s no point to it, I’m just talking to myself here.
I agree with the announcers: If there’s any significant improvement I wanna see this year, it’s punishing the Nats.
Nice
Our starting 5 seems to be shaping up nicely.
the nationals announcers...
are painfully misinformed announcers.
My opinion cant be wrong. It's my opinion. Those who don't like it can piss up a rope.
BTW – Nats beating the Muts 4-1 in the 3rd.

Ignore this. I obviously went past a old game on MBLtv.
Geez I hate looking stooopid.

Heyward got robbed.

Happens every time: guy makes a fantastic defensive play to to end the inning, leads off the next inning, and…is out quickly

Nieves hits a blooper that hangs up just long enough for Melky to come over to grab it in shallow right.
Manny Acosta assigned to AAA Gwinnett today
I dunno how far behind I am on that, but this is the first I’ve heard of it. Roster now stands at 37, they say.
Conrad replacing Prado
Chipper out – Thurston in.
"When all is said and done, more is said than done." - Lou Holtz
Interesting battle,
for the last bench spot. Conrad came into ST hot, but has come to a stand still of late. Thurston right the opposite.
This may come down to the wire.
1 ER over last 23 innings for Braves pitching.
WOW — is that what they said?
"When all is said and done, more is said than done." - Lou Holtz
Likely – because our BP gave up a lead the other day for a loss.
"When all is said and done, more is said than done." - Lou Holtz
Yep, the day before Cavez gave up like 6 runs in 1/3 of an inning,
then Manny came in, and did what he always does, and we lost, of course.
RBI
Grounder down to the third, Zimmerman back-hands the grab, but can’t throw out Infante.
Sammons scores
Diaz pulls it, off the shortstops glove
Goes into left. Infante makes it to third, beats the throw.
On the throw, Diaz comes into second base.
Wright just got an RBI and Nats 5 / Muts 2
Headed to 6th
"When all is said and done, more is said than done." - Lou Holtz
2-0 going into the 7th..
It would be nice to have a little more insurance than that if possible.

Hey Bronn – I’m somewhat new, so forgive me if you’ve answered this question a hundred times already – but why Superman?

I suppose with all the posting I'm doing for my play by play
the row of supermans down the side of page is a bit annoying.
Ichiro?

Lol, good announcing moment
Jim Powell was talking about how Moylan mostly stays on the rubber while he’s pitching. Then he steps off and walks it off for second.
Talking about Heyward now. His parents paid him a surprise visit today from Georgia-drove down starting at 4 AM
JS talking about how balanced the team is, how good FW has done putting this group together.
About Heyward’s parents, he had talked to them and told them they should be proud of just what kind of man he is already.
JS talking about how they got Glavine in as the special assistant. They wanted him a part of the organization again. Wanted him to get some exposure to various front office aspects of the game so he can see what he might want to ultimately do with the team.
JS was asked to guess what he might eventually settle on doing with the team, but he doesn’t really know. Broadcasting, scouting, managing, or organizational.
Duh! (V8 slap to the forehead) just remembered I have a small external speaker that I can hook up in the headphone jack to make the audio of this where I can actually hear it.

Missed a little bit of this conversation-they’re talking about the MLB rules committee and floating realignment.
Dang Mets. Castillo with a 3 run homer to get the lead now 5-4.

Heyward was up-but then Heyward Ks on a foul tip.
0-4 for Heyward. Time to panic and start stocking up canned goods and water.
Hicks with an insurance run we needed!

"When all is said and done, more is said than done." - Lou Holtz
Yeah, I’m not keeping up at all at this point.
But bottom of the roster guys are getting a couple of hits here.
Hopefully Hicks works out for us-we really could use more depth in the organization at shortstop. He’s got a pretty solid glove and his bat isn’t bad, but he needs to mature quickly.
guys trying to do the war chant again
They no sense of melody, harmony, or pitch. And it’s not even that hard to sing it.
Thanks Bronn for the play-by-play!
Enjoyed it y’all.
