Braves Quote For The Day II
From Bill Shanks over at The Braves Show:
Arodys Vizcaino, who was acquired from the Yankees in the Javier Vazquez trade, was dominant in a four-inning appearance Thursday against Detroit's Low-A team. Vizcaino faced 12 batters and retired all 12 batters. There were not many good swings off Vizcaino, who at times toyed with the hitters with his outstanding curve and blazing fastball. You could tell Vizcaino still needs work on his changeup, but his fastball and curve are above-average pitches. Vizcaino even wowed some of the other Braves pitching prospects who were watching the game.
I like. Just think how good he'll be when he gets his changeup working.

WOW
This franchise has a very bright future. Think of where this team could be in a few years. Whether we hold on to these prospects or use them as trade chips, ATL should be a team in the hunt every season for the next 10+ years…that’s not even considering the potential the ’10 team has. Great time to be a Braves fan.

If Vizcaino reaches his potential...
And becomes a #1/2 for the Bravos for a long time, the Javy deal is going to look like an absolute steal.

The amount of talented arms the Braves have...
competing for A ball slots is just sick. Vizcaino, Teheran, Delgado, Hoover, Stovall, Spruill, Devall, Lopez, Perez, among others. It’ll be interesting to see who makes it up from this mix into the fight to replace KK, Lowe and Hudson in a couple years.
You left out 2 huge sleepers
Andy Otero – LHSP, 17 and Caleb Brewer – RHSP, 20 both have very good stuff and are on the rise in our system.
Brewer is my pick for sleeper of the year in 2010..

To list all the talented young arms we got...
would take a while. But yeah, Otero and Brewer are in the mix as well, as is David Hale and several others. We’ve got over a dozen or more arms with significant upside in AA (to include Ortegano, Minor, etc) and below.

I’m dieing to get the season started. Its gonna be great. Living in ottawa ontario I plan on spending quite a bit of money travelling to see them play. Any donations appreciated hahaha. But seriously, heyward is gonna tear it up. How is chipper doing? Is he healthy? I hope he’s great as always this season. Let’s go braves!

Chipper is looking pretty good this spring
He still hasn’t K’d this spring and has 9 or 10 BB. He looks like he has his power stroke back as well.
hopefully get to see him soon
When he hits AA and comes to Jax. This little blurb brought a smile to my face.
FW – FTW!

nope
We live near Jacksonville, FL (St Augustine actually), just moved here a few months ago, so I didn’t get to go to any Suns games last year for Heyward/Freeman when the M-Braves came to town. I’ll be taking my son to his first game this year though. Should be a lot of fun. I plan on going to at least one game a year when the AA Braves are in the visiting dugout :)

Love hearing about the mL guys!!!
Vizcaino is going to be really special if he remains healthy. Shanks also reported a couple days ago that Teheran looks like he’s picked up a mph or 2 on his FB and his stuff looks terrific as well.
Okay
That’s Avery at the top, and I think that’s a very young maddux there, but the guy in the middle perplexes me. Pete Smith?

Nice…I wonder what keeps happening to the right of our Braves pitchers? BTW, Teheran looks like he is oozing confidence right here..
CB…Your teasing us with these comment pics, when are your ST pic posts coming???

So...
I’m trying to understand the Vazquez deal from the Yanks’ perspective. Either they didn’t believe that Joba could be a starter (and thus needed another arm) or they felt that Vizcaino was not going to be valuable… Now it’s obviously early, but pitchers talented enough to just “toy with” equivalent-age hitters don’t grow on trees. Wouldn’t the Yankees probably have been better off starting both Joba and Hughes and keeping Vizcaino and Melky? Regardless, it looks like the deal could be a huge win for us.

Or
They think Javy will continue to do what he did last year (or close to it) and arent worried about resigning him because they have an unlimited checking account. I doubt they care about having Vizcaino in the future when they have a chance to string together 2, 3 or 4 championships with this team.
Even if Javy doesnt replicate last year, CC, AJ and Javy is a good 1-2-3 punch.
"If I have asthma, they won't let me scuba. And if I can’t scuba, then what’s this all been about?? What am I working toward??"
The truth is
We really only need 2 of Vizcaino/Teheran/Delgado to work out. We’re going to have Hanson for another 5 years, and Jurrjens for another 3, and Mike Minor should be ready pretty soon as a 3/4. We’ll still have at least 4 years of Kris Medlen as well, who I’m convinced can be a good starter. And we’ll still have Hudson through 2013 as well.
The future of Braves’ pitching is taken care of.
plus we got a lot of guys rated just a tier below, like spruill, hoover, etc., and if any of them pan out, we’re gonna be in reeeally good shape.

Great pitching was the key to our streak of NL east championships, imo
I see that streak starting back up this season.
Perhaps
I’m really excited about this Braves team in the future, but it looks harder than ever to compete, even within our own division. Back in the 90s, we had basically the two best pitchers in the National League. Right now, we don’t have the best pitcher in our own division. Or the second best pitcher.
Maybe in three years, once Halladay has gotten older, and assuming Santana’s health continues to go downhill, Hanson might be better than either, but for now it’s more the depth of pitching rather than front end which we’re relying on. And the playoffs are all about good pitching at the front end. The Diamondbacks, for instance, simply parleyed two super starters into a championship.
Our division is just tough right now.
The Phillies are peaking and are very good. We have a shot, but it won’t be easy. Give it a couple of years and the Phillies will start to lose pieces due to salary.
McLouth
Going 2-for-2 yesterday puts Lil Mac over .100 for the spring. He’s creeping up on Francoeur, who’s hitting .179 for the spring.
