Spring Training Open Thread: Tigers at Braves

We get another televised game today, once again on ESPN, as the Braves host the Tigers. You can bet that the ESPN announcers will be talking about our right fielder non-stop for at least the first hour. I'm actually okay with that.

Melky Cabrera, LF
Martin Prado, 2B
Chipper Jones, 3B
Brian McCann, C
Troy Glaus, 1B
Jason Heyward, RF
Nate McLouth, CF
Omar Infante, SS
Derek Lowe, P

Following Derek Lowe on the mound will be Billy Wagner, Takashi Saito, and Scott Proctor. Meanwhile, Peter Moylan and Jo-Jo Reyes will appear on the backfields in a hi-A Myrtle Beach game against the Nationals' team.

I need to find a bar near my office with the game on and go watch for my lunching hour (or hours).

I know all of the hubub is about Heyward right now, but I’m starting to like the idea of Cabrera in the leadoff spot. I realize it may be a fluid thing and Cox likes having an everyday guy like McLouth in the leadoff spot, but Cabrera seems to thrive in the tablesetter role while McLouth’s mindset would be better in an RBI spot.

Either way I don’t think its going to matter too much, but Cabrera’s versatility and flexiblity in the lineup is really starting endear me to him.

by bbxxj on Mar 26, 2010 12:36 PM EDT reply actions

now that we know what's happening with Heyward...

i want this lineup opening day:

Cabrera
Prado
Chipper
Glaus
BMac
Heyward
Esco
McLouth

and against a lefty…..

Diaz
Prado
Chipper
Glaus
BMac
Esco
Heyward
McLouth

I woudn’t mind seeing Cabrera getting a fair share of PT in CF against LHP as McLouth had some pretty nasty splits last year.

I don’t think we should have a ‘set’ lineup either way, but start Cabrera mostly at leadoff with Diaz getting some time there, and then start Diaz and McLouth in the 8th spot where they are going to get a nice chunk of RBI opps because of Esco and Heyward’s nifty OBPs in front of them. Dang thats a deep lineup….

by bbxxj on Mar 26, 2010 12:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m not crazy about the Mac/Glaus flip. I think Mac hits better in the 5 with all the “power” pressure off. Just let him hit and it will come. And I think we’ll be seeing alot of the MelkMan in the OF whereever it may be. Good defense and can give us alot of options with the lineup.

But then Melk

Interesting that Melky is leading off and Nate is down.

I like it. We need to have an RBI man batting 8th if we are going to bat Heyward/Escobar 6/7 or 7/6. I know I have already said this, but Melky has that leadoff ‘mentality’ that is needed in that spot and McLouth has the RBI ‘mentality’ needed down in the order. I don’t by into needing a certian mentality too often but I think it is relevent in this situation.

If you’re worried about Heyward handling major league pitching. Verlander is as good as there is in the Majors. Runner up for the Cy Young last year, with some nasty pitches and great heat. Heyward took him 11 pitches, fouled off everything, worked the count full. He certainly wasn’t outmatched, even though Verlander went through nearly his full repertoire.

Fantasy Baseball Question

I just wrapped up my first season of fantasy football, where as a rookie GM I won our league championship. I am really itching to play some Fantasy Baseball this year. Anyone have a preference for a FB service. I am currently with ESPN and did a mock draft earlier this week. Should I stick with ESPN or is there a better free FB service out there. ESPN will let me join any open public league so that is a consideration also as I can’t get enough bums here at work to commit to FB.

i really enjoy yahoo...

piece of advice: draft lots and lots of pitchers (especially closers). by mid-year, closers are worth their weight in gold on the trade market.
and, for most leagues, there are 2 SP slots, 3 P slots (can be either) and 2 RP slots. So, if you draft, say 10 pitchers (6 starters and 4 closers) , you will probably win K’s, wins, and saves weekly, and your era and whip will be a lot more consistent.

just a thought.

My opinion cant be wrong. It's my opinion. Those who don't like it can piss up a rope.
